8:15pm. I feel a sudden need to go to the library. It can’t wait till tomorrow! Writing demands research! A quick search and I scribble down the books I want. I race my bike down to the library, get all the books on my list before it closes at 9:00. Nothing feels better than striding out of the library with an armful of books. I jam and stack and jam them into my bike basket. The books make my bike a little wobbly, and, also because I forgot my helmet in my rush out the door, adrenaline sharpens me on my ride home. What an adventure! A heroic victory! Such skill! This is what writing looks like right?

Evection Noun. Astronomy. Regular variation in the eccentricity of the moon's orbit around the earth, caused mainly by the sun's attraction. Found a new word and made this sketch. I thought the earth would be unhappy about the sun messing with its moon. But how do you stand up to THE SUN? Saturn likes to talk. Jupiter has big ugly spot on her face but doesn’t make a big deal about it.

I’ve always wanted to learn how to use watercolors. I recently finished reading “Making Colors Sing” by Jeanne Dobie, which was an excellent book. As an exercise, I painted these thumbnail color sketches using art paintings as reference (thank you Google Art Project). I often find myself thinking about Jeanne Dobie’s parting advice at the end of her book. She writes:

“Have you ever looked into a lake or pond or even a rain puddle and discovered with surprise that the reflection looks better than the actual scene? Something indefinable happens when the subject is transposed. It is not quite the same as the scene; it is an “image” of the scene. When we, as artists, view a landscape, our minds also act as mirrors, reflecting what we see much like the lake or pond. Therefore, to be creative, we should paint the reflection in the mind, and not the scene.”

Pink are the days I’ve worked on Seated Lady. Aug-Oct was a crazy time, not a lot of progress there. It’s tough, but It’s important to me to make time for my personal projects. My new program involves waking up 6:00am, spending 90 minutes on Seated Lady, exercising for 30 minutes, working 9-6 at Blue Sky, spending the evening on social/doodling/tumbling/reflection time with lights out by 9:30.

What’s this? An update? Headline story: Since January, I’ve been working at Blue Sky Animation Studios as a storyboard artist! If you don’t know, Blue Sky did Ice Age, Rio, and the adorable Peanuts movie that just came out. I’m working on Ice Age: Collision Course, which comes out next year.

I’ve wanted to work for a feature film animation studio forever. I still can’t believe it’s happening. I get to spend my days drawings silly cartoons with uber talented adult children.

I feel lucky it happened. At CTN last year, I got the last voucher to do a portfolio review with Blue Sky (someone had taken the last one and GIVEN IT BACK - THANK YOU MYSTERIOUS PERSON) I interviewed with Troy Quane, an amazing story artist. The studio called me for an interview in December, the same day I was going to buy a one-way ticket to LA (I was determined to get into the land of animation). They hired me for a trial period in January and then offered me full time position in July. Yay!

It’s been a busy time. I wish I had an update for the Myst comic or the store but unfortunately I don’t have anything right now. I do have some assorted sketches and paintings I am going to try to post little by little.
