HBO max has officially announced the release of the second and third seasons of the show The Last of Us. These seasons will cover the content of the second video game The Last of Us pt 2 and will be more spread out to fill in 2 seasons of the show. The non-official date for the release of the next season is January 27, 2024. Pedro Pascal has said in an interview that the crew may start filming at the end of this calendar month leaving the release for the show to be sooner in the year 2024.

I am personally very excited for the second and third seasons to be released given that part 2 of the series leaves for many dramatic turns and possibilities it is very uncertain on ways they can take the show. I am hoping for a good cast to be collected for important characters such as Abby. Rotten Tomatoes had appraised the show at a 96% critic review as well as an 89% viewer enjoyment rate. This show is continuing to surprise viewers worldwide and will be exceeding the top charts once again in 2024.

This is one of my favorite parts of the game and I wanted to upload a video from my own playing experiences yet through technical difficulties was unable to. I found a relative video on youtube that shows just how graphic they kade the end of the game and the severity of the situation that Joel is put though.

Neil Druckmann

Neil Druckmann, the co-president of the video game developer Naughty Dog since 2020, has done some amazing and incredible work for their studio and video game production. Druckmanns first video game work came as an intern with Naughty Dog, programming games such as Jax 3. Then, shortly after became a designer for the Uncharted series and even wrote comics and graphic novels. It wasn’t until 2018 that Druckmann had become the vice president of Naughty Dog, which at the time was developing The Last of Us pt.2. He had earned a lot of praise for The Last of Us series; the game is often referred to as the best written and one of the greatest video games ever made.

Druckmann later became a writer and executive producer for the TV show The Last of Us where he directed, with Craig Mazin, the second episode of the series. Druckmann was also the producer of the Uncharted movie that came out in 2022.

Documentary

“How do you start this show?” This documentary started this way to show us just how hard of a process it was to transform a video game into a film adaptation. They use actors and video developers to prove the authenticity of the documentary. They had the old voice actors from characters from the video game, Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, which was a very neat part to me given that was the way the franchise was introduced to me.

Neil Druckmann was the creator, writer, and executive producer of the video game and said that there are people that might never pick up a controller so he wanted to show the world how amazing the game truly was. Pedro Pascal, the actor of Joel in the show, talked about his experiences when accepting the role in the show; his sister's nephews even knew about the video game and pushed him to accept the role. The actress who played Ellie in the show, Bella Ramsey, was advised actually not to play the video games so as to not copy the original voice actor's version of Ellie, but to become her own unique version. She did admit it was too hard to stay away from it and she did watch some of the gameplay from the videogame. Ashley Johnson said in the documentary that she was excited for Bella Ramsey to take over her character after watching her act in hit shows such as Game of Thrones. Pascal stated that he thought the producers did a great job with the script because they were able to explore and nourish certain parts of the show to expand the game to what the show was capable of. Pascal also spoke about the internal life of the characters saying that he was thrilled with the way the show dug deeper into the characters' lives from the game and gave them all a thrilling backstory in the show.

“You wanna know what the biggest surprise of adapting The Last of Us is?” Neil Druckmann, the creator of the game, was very generous, flexible, and smart to be able to reinvent The Last of Us in the way that he did. The show will bring in various scientific side cuts to show how serious of a tone they were trying to take and emphasize the worldwide dangers of the cordyceps fungi and everyone's scared reactions to the disease. They said they wanted to show the viewers the reality of the science behind the show. Barrie Gower, the visual designer of the fungus and humans on the show, explained why he made the progression of turning into a fungal zombie the way they do. They talk about how the actors who played infected in the show did a very good job and were dedicated to performing the task they were put up to. They brought in the old clicker voice actors that were from the video, as well as introduced a new male clicker in the show.

The show had location managers go out and scout places for the show to travel across the United States. The abandoned mall site they used in the show was demolished right after they were done using it in the show. They used something so old and dilapidated but made it look so amazing in the show to get demolished right afterward. They brought in people to shovel snow from around an area to use in their one setting and included three hundred and fifty dump trucks worth of snow to cover their area for it to snow right after they were done that night. They used four big wind machines to create the snow drift effect in the show. They used a completely empty field to create the cul de sac scene where they put 5 houses and a plow truck that blew into many cars and even a house that exploded later on. For that scene, they selected a whole library of scenes that they compiled onto each other to get the best effect for the show.

The Bloater was one of the most exciting things to see re-created in the show. They used cgi because they needed to make the bloater move faster and have inhuman motions that an actor in their prosthetic suit just could not do.

Library Research

After doing some research in the library, I had good experiences as well as some bad ones. A good research experience that I had while using the Kutztown library was utilizing the tab “popular databases”, as well as using the library to find the book and use it during my research. The book I found, Interactive stories and video game art : a storytelling framework for game design, gave me a unique perspective on how the game was developed. It also showed me maybe why the show was taken in a certain direction, for instance, the film adaptation has many remarkable differences from the game that was released in 2013. Although this resource was very helpful I did have some bad experiences. For example, Aaron and I were trying to find a book together to practice the process of finding a book using the library's organization system. Unfortunately, this was a bad experience for us both because we were unable to find the book that we were looking for. After gazing through the aisles for a bit, we asked for help from a library assistant. We came to find out that the book simply just was not there. All and All the experiences helped me to realize I should utilize the Kutztown library more for my future assignments.

The Fungus is Real!

The Last of Us has been releasing episodes almost exactly how the game portrayed the story, but another fact we didn't know is that this fungus might be closer to affecting our human population than we had thought. The Fungus from the show commonly known as Ophiocordyceps has been setting its sights on bigger goals in our world. Bryn Dentinger stated that "There seems to be some combination of physical manipulation of muscle fibers, for example, possibly growth into the brain itself, that can impact its behavior," he said. "But there's also very likely some sort of chemical attack on the host, either small molecules or proteins or some other things, that end up manipulating brain behavior.”. This fungus is closer than we think to evolving and affecting our society possibly in the same ways as The Last of Us.

Some of the wild conspiracies I will be talking about in this blog will be the deflategate, the Patrick Ewing conspiracy, the Michael Jordan gambling conspiracy, the spygate, and many more. All of these conspiracies provide hard facts that it could be true, but also could be a coincidence. The deflategate for example, provided evidence that the footballs that Tom Brady was using during the game were tampered with to make it easier for him to throw. In the 2015 AFC Championship game vs the Indianapolis Colts, reports surfaced that the footballs that the Patriots were using were heavily deflated. Brady denied all of the rumors and to this day we do not know if he did it or not. According to the Gale In Context biography about Tom Brady, “As the NFL continued its investigation into Deflategate, it concluded that the footballs used during the AFC Championship were tampered with and that it was “more probable than not” Brady knew about the deflation” ("Tom Brady." This blog is about sports conspiracies and it's really interesting to me that we share a conspiracy aspect that something could happen but might not. Or maybe was not so true what we have been told from certain sources. Although we are writing about completely different topics.

There is a fungus in real life that is able to take over small insects and control them as a host. This is a conspiracy in the Last of Us because if the climate were to change these fungi can control bigger hosts and might even be able to control humans one day. It could be true or it could not be true yet it leads to a great discussion on what would happen if this fungus were to take humans over.

Introduction

This blog is exploring deeper into the world of the Last of Us and where it originated from rather than just the TV show. The Last of Us released as a video game June 2013, and was developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony computer entertainment. The games genre is categorized as an action adventure game, and carries a rather interesting plot line throughout the campaign. According to Wikipedia, “The Last of Us is an action-adventure game played from a third-person perspective.[1] The player traverses post-apocalyptic environments such as towns, buildings, forests, and sewers to advance the story. The player can use firearms, improvised weapons, hand-to-hand combat, and stealth to defend against hostile humans and cannibalistic creatures infected by a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus.” Although the fungus is not their only enemy, there are also firefly groups, which are a rebellion group in the new world, as well as the military which owns the Quarantine zones.

The game begins with Sarah buying Joel a watch for his birthday, and watching a movie together as they fall asleep. The fungus starts to spread as infected begin turning aggressive and begin multiplying by spreading to other areas. Joel locks Sarah inside as an infected runs into their door trying to get in. This is Sarah’s first encounter with an infected and she is scared as Joel must kill it in order to protect the both of them. They then wait for Tommy, Joel’s brother, to come and get them out of their state and hopefully away from the infected area. You proceed to drive through a city being burned and destroyed as infected run all around. Eventually, the car gets hit and Joel must carry Sarah away from infected. Joel and Sarah are confronted by a Military soldier who received orders to shoot on sight. The soldier got one shot off before being killed by Tommy trying to help them. Sarah was struck by the stray bullet from the soldier and dies in her Joel’s arms.
