[Spoilers for the film Leviticus]

Leviticus is such a beautiful depiction of the concept “there’s no Christian hate like Christian love.” This movie captures religious hatred so beautifully. It’s so easy to misunderstand the film and blame the kids for everything that happened. But the kids did nothing wrong. The kids were experimenting and falling in love for the first time because that’s what kids do!

Everything was fine until the parents and community stepped in and decided that their children were “sinners” and needed to be “cured.” It’s easy to blame Naim for telling Hunter’s parents but that’s the point. The idea of “love thy neighbor” disappears when your community is hostile towards each other. Naim did something a scared, confused teenager living in a conservative community would do. (“But I wouldn’t…,” fair enough but don’t get in my comments acting like he’s crazy or something)

And Naim didn’t know about the ritual. It was the parents that decided the ritual was a good idea. They let their children be tortured by that entity because they thought fear would “teach them holiness.”

Instead, the kids learned that nothing they did mattered, they were forever cursed and forever isolated. Ironically the entity only appears when the kids are alone which makes them dependent on the same people who turned their backs on them. They can’t do anything because even if they decide to embrace community, they still are vulnerable the second they are alone.

And that’s the point. The people don’t care about God- they care about isolation, fear, and power. They want to make it seem like they are following Christ while doing horrific things. The kids they condemned were guilty of love. They are responsible for two kids deaths and the torture of three others.

And there’s seemingly no way around the entity besides death. Again, very ironic. Christians are so obsessed with the afterlife, they’ve forgotten that this life and how you behave in it are what get you there not just faith alone.

Leviticus is just a mind blowing film and reminds me to get out of my hometown and away from my religious mother 😅.

it's also tucked away when he's in sochi in episode two while his father is still alive, his brother is harassing him through texts, ect

and noticeably absent here when he's caring for his father during the summer in ep 4

but of course the moment when he's alone in moscow in ep 5 after his father has passed and he's speaking to shane, it's out. the details of this show will make me go insane

I agree largely with the points you make about Yuna but I do think it's missing the context of how management works in team sports where you often go pro before college. Kids that go pro and don't have parents involved in their management are essentially fucked because their parents aren't part of the system and don't know how to protect them from it (this is similar to if you didn't get much of an education, you'll struggle much more to advocate for your kids in the education system). I'm not saying parental over involvement is healthy or the only way to keep them safe, but the ones that don't have involved parents often experience assault, peer pressure, drug addictions, maybe they even go onto become abusers themselves, their education is also heavily neglected but this often happens regardless of parental involvement (shout out specifically to my country's women's rugby team for this, because they can't seem to understand why the teenagers on their team would even want to pass their exams). This is because they have no other influences but older players and coaches, and unless those coaches are particularly interested in their wellbeing, it can lead to them being essentially neglected.

Parents aren't going to fix everything, sometimes they can even cause more problems, but the kids that survive being a pro athlete need a strong support system even when they travel so often.

Honestly I can imagine a character like Shane deciding he's going to go pro and the reason Yuna gets so involved is to make sure he's safe and successful, at least as much as she can. I can't imagine he'd ever be talked out of that decision.

While I understand your point, I think you are ignoring that Yuna is actually apart of the pro-sport culture. It should not be normalized in the first place for parents to be managing their children. A parent’s job is to love and support their children, not develop and manage their career and image before that child even finishes basic secondary education. Regardless of that, let’s look at Yuma’s action.

Yuna did not do enough to support Shane and that’s my point. Yuna absolutely knew to a degree that Shane would experience racism so let’s not pretend like she didn’t know that hockey is a white as fuck sport. She pressures him about brand deals. She brings up hockey even when it’s not appropriate or Shane needs emotional support. She absolutely loves and supports Shane to a degree but I’m asking the fandom to look at her more fully.

I get it. I really do. My mom also hyper focuses on success because failure for POC has higher costs than for privileged people. I logically understand her role and perspective but that’s my point. People think of Yuna as a “momager” rather than as Shane’s mother, his safe space. That’s the toxic part.

On Yuna Hollander

(CW: Discussion of toxic/abusive maternal parenting and relationships)

TDLR: Having a successful child and that child liking you doesn’t automatically erase the harm that was caused or allowed by your parenting. However, I think Yuma is redeemable.

One of my most controversial Heated Rivalry opinion is that I don’t like or forgive Yuna.

I think people excuse her parenting because she does grow and I acknowledge that growth but it doesn’t erase what she did for the first like 20 years of Shane’s life.

In part because I grew up with a mother like Yuna, I understand where Shane’s anxiety and neuroticism come from. He spent the first 18 years of life under intense pressure to be the best in an environment that works against his core being. Years being molded and forced into whatever boxes allowed for his mother’s idea of success. He then internalized all those pressures and made them apart of his identity. And his mother supported him technically but did he support HIM or his success? I don’t think Yuna would have been as supportive if Shane didn’t develop a love for hockey.

I think for Yuna, Shane is his success not his actual humanity. That’s not to say Shane would have never played hockey professionally if Yuna didn’t apply that pressure but rather to point out that Yuna was harmful (and dare I say abusive) towards Shane at various points in his childhood and early career. It’s easy to write it off because we know Shane does truly love hockey and his parents do love him.

I think the show does a good job of showing that push and pull even if the fandom ignores it. We see it through the dinners Shane had with his family. Revisit the first conversation Shane has with Rose and you’ll see the cracks start to appear.

I do see Yuna starting to grow at the end of season one. She does acknowledge that she hurt Shane and it’s a great start. I think Shane and her can build a healthier relationship but that has to start with a transparent look at how growing up in such an intense environment is damaging and the role she played in that.*

*You can absolutely apply the same blame to David as well

I just know the second Ilya and Shane went public, brands started blowing Yuna’s phone UP trying to get their brand known for featuring the first gay hockey couple.

She has like five brands on hold while trying to convince CCM and Bauer to design a rainbow stick with Ilya and Shane’s specifications.

I feel like Shane loves seeing the Metros (and eventually Centaurs) massage therapist.

I know some people think Shane is touch adverse but we know he likes rough sex. I feel like getting a massage would be a similar experience. He knows what to expect and he definitely likes getting pulled and stretched out.

If the team had a big win and Shane took some good hits, he’s getting a massage. If the team had a brutal lose, he's getting a massage. Everyone who works with the players know that the team's captain needs his deep tissue massage and you shouldn't dare interrupt.

During the Rose-era I imagine he got them even more frequently as his playing got more physical and they helped him cope with the tension.

Sylvia is one of the only characters that hasn’t been proven to be reconditioned. Literally everyone else is in the reconditioning montage during Sleep (Gerard, Ray, Mikey, Frank, DS, the other Clerk, the Dictator, the “Secretary” woman, etc.)

Which has me believing she’s really the one in charge.

Tbh I don't think we are getting another MCR album and I'm not upset about that! I don't think its cause of the fans or the leaks or anything like that, I think the members have simply moved on. Frank has his own music and Gerard and Mikey have their art. Ray is enjoying his privacy.

If you don't want to listen to leaks I respect that opinion but I'm not going to fault anyone for listening to it because I simply do not have hope for MCR5 and they exist publicly. Tbh I think even if we did get an MCR5 it would be buns.

I'm not a blind MCR fan, sorry y'all!

God I love this band

Edit: The Clerk and Gerard playing in the outline of The Clerk's body before Sleep is interesting. They have this pleasant interaction and then Sleep starts playing and what the narrator says ("this is the worst day of your life, but the first day of yourself"). During Sleep we have this very intense flashing collage of TV screens. Is Sleep Gerard during reconditioning saying he isn't sorry for the future rebellion and his sexuality? If it was the worst day of his life but the first of being himself, did The Clerk and Gerard somewhat plan the rebellion during MOAT? I'm cooking y'all!
