Kageyama's promise to play volleyball with Kindaichi and Kunimi again one day sounds sweet until you realize that Kunimi Akira, middle class 9-5 bank employee would be going up against Kindaichi Yuutaro and Kageyama Tobio, Japanese National Olympic Volleyball Team members
Kunimi and Kindaichi are my mood
But suga and hinata look so proud and I just—
this is one of those refs that gets sadder as you along
My favorite moments in HQ chapter 401:
1. Hinata acting as a decoy, his original position from high school and also the position that Kageyama encouraged him to do, which earned the win for msby
2. KAGEHINA NATIONAL TEAM! KAGEYAMA NUMBER 9 AND HINATA NUMBER 10! THEIR NUMBERS FROM KARASUNO!
3. Kagehina keeping track of their wins and losses against each other. This shows how they still take their rivalry seriously even after graduating from high school and momentarily separating!
4. SAKUATSU GETTING SCAMMER VIBES FROM KUROO
5. Kunimi telling Kageyama that he has one brain cell LMAO
6. Daichi, Kuroo, and Bokuto reuniting. CAPTAINS REUNION!
7. Kageyama wanting to play again with his old teammates from middle school and rivals from high school
8. KAGEHINA SMILES
9. Last but not the least, KUROO CAME HOME! WITH THE NEKOMA BANNER!
This is the kind of content I am here for.
Sometimes I really feel for middle school kageyama but I also feel like people in the fandom are getting the wrong idea about why he was ostracized and why his current team’s acceptance is so important. He wasn’t picked on because of his looks or something arbitrary and out of his hands like yamaguchi, he was left out because the people around them genuinely disliked who he was and found him hard to get along with. So kitadai. Let me start off by saying that I’m not completely convinced kageyama’s old teammates were wrong about everything; there might of been a better way to handle it, but I imagine they were at the end of their rope. Was there any reason kindaichi and the others had to like middle school kageyama? No. Judging by the bits of him we see, his teammates reactions, and his underclassmen’s downright fear of him we can probably conclude that middle school kageyama was a dick. He had no restraint, no respect for other people’s limitations, and no intention to compromise on anything ever. His entire team probably felt super disrespected. That’s not to say kageyama meant to be difficult; I don’t doubt that he never meant to harm or scare anyone. He just did not see anything wrong with what he was doing and even when it was explained to him he didn’t understand and couldn’t accept it. So in that sense he really was innocent, at least I believe so. But what did that mean for his team? That didn’t make him any easier to work with. It didn’t make being screamed at every practice any easier to deal with. It didn’t make them any less annoyed and/or intimidated by him. I think kindaichi, kunimi, and the coach at least knew that kageyama just didn’t understand but they couldn’t get through to him to make him. At some point they probably got fed up enough and stopped trying. And then they got fed up enough to really stop trying. And objectively from a reader’s perspective? I think it was a good thing that the team decided altogether to tell kageyama “no we’re not with you”. Words and gestures don’t always get through to the ever dense kageyama so he did need to learn somehow. If everyone you know has a problem with the way you are to that extent, I feel like anyone would realize that it’s time for a bit of soul searching. And to his credit, that’s exactly what kageyama did. He had to learn to respect boundaries and he had to learn to compromise. But after unlearning the actually bad stuff, kageyama is naturally just someone that’s hard to read and hard for a lot of people to get along with. Kitadai wasn’t the sort of team that could handle that.
Enter karasuno. Karasuno doesn’t care. Their entire team is full up of people who are hard to understand/get along with for normal people. They’re fluid people, in a word. Not only fluid in their playing, but also in their personalities. That means that not only can they accomodate kageyama on court, they can do it off court too. That’s not to say they have to get along with him, that just means they accept him. At kitagawa daiichi it was like two opposing forces; they could not accept kageyama, they didn’t know how. But in karasuno, there is a space kageyama’s welcome to occupy. Even tsukishima very quickly carved out a place in his life for kageyama. Sure he might not always like the guy, but there he is. He exists. We play together. And tsukishima can deal with that. Hinata despised kageyama but he was able to accept him even faster than tsukishima. Same with all of karasuno. Whether or not they get along with kageyama, they accept him being there. Ofc that isn’t to say kageyama didn’t need to change at all. We saw him revert back to his rude, unyielding king mode recently in the manga. And while karasuno easily accepted the spirit of what he was trying to accomplish, we often gloss over the fact that they also let him know that he was being rude as hell and they weren’t going to pay him any attention if he kept straight up screaming at them and overstepping boundaries. They put him in his place and middle school kageyama probably wouldn’t have been able to accept that but current kageyama was. So its a combination. Kageyama did have to change, I can’t think of any team that could have properly worked with his past self. But he also needed to find a team that could accept him. Karasuno is willing to let kageyama be the king of the court with conditions applied. The team brought the acceptance and kageyama brought his new willingness to compromise. And that’s so important. It’s important that kageyama learned from his experience and it’s important that he met people who were able to easily bring him into the fold.
Ok this is probably useless and pointless but I feel I wanna add this, so ignore me if this comes out as stupid as I’m expecting. So everything on the op is 100% true. But, what about what could possibly have made Kageyama learn that mannerism? We didn’t get much of Oikawa and Kageyama, but we know Oiwaka didn’t like him either. We saw Kageyama asking one of his senpai to teach him a new skill that was good for the team altogether. But Oikawa refused, he refused to help someone who looks up to him better himself. And not only did this treatment coke from a senpai, it was the captain as well. At this point in his life Kageyama is still learning how to interact with people and socialize. So, his elders are his main point of learning these things. So seeing Oikawa reacting so harshly to his wishes could have impacted how he thinks a captain, or someone is any position of power, should treat others. And he didn’t see bad consequences to the way Oikawa treated him, they were a good team that played well. We even saw Oikawa nearly hit Kageyama. Through all of just his first year, Kageyama learned that the lead of their team didn’t need to respect him or help him get better (from what we’re given). But, we do see Oikawa has changed and helps his high school team and listens to them, but he still does not like Kageyama. I don’t know if Kageyama did anything to Oikawa prior to entering the volleyball team and, accidentally, intimidating him with his skill. But if there is no other reason for his harshness towards Kageyama, that means Kageyama probably didn’t know why his senpai was so rude to him. Which would, possibly, cause him to believe that that is how a captain to act towards his team. I promise I’m not blaming Oikawa for the way Kageyama treated his team, but it is a possibility that Kageyama’s actions were caused by socialization. What Kageyama did was completely unacceptable and disrespectful, but he literally may not have known better even with his team telling him he was wrong. If that’s what he learned was right, it’s much more difficult to change how he acts.
The expressions in this episode were on point, Kunimi's in particular were just 10/10, look at him pouting
im pretty sure this brought a smile to everyone's faces.
Kitaichi study session.
I never realized this would actually come up on the pixiv dictionary page for Kitagawa Daiichi until someone told me wwwww Even though i’ve been drawing nothing but Shiratorizawa (more like ShiraGo) lately, Seijō/Kitaichi is still where i started from. They are still just as precious.

Defeat turned into motivation is a dangerous thing, everyone faced their hardships and turned it on it’s head to create their ideal life…
Oikawa strengthened his love for volleyball. Hinata worked incredibly hard to go pro and play as Kageyama’s equal. Kageyama found players that could match him, learned the value of a team and got to enjoy playing without having to worry about being abandoned.
Everyone worked tirelessly, and even though they didn’t all continue to play volleyball, they all took home their own lessons. Every character grew…
They connected and saw the view from the top, they kept their eyes on the prize even after losing. Haikyuu did a great job at pushing the importance of dedication and hard work, natural talent is great but isn’t the only way to the top. When I first started Haikyuu, I, truthfully, couldn’t take it seriously. I thought it was just some series about volleyball, but I was definitely wrong. Every character had solid development and depth, it has lessons and was a great reminder that persistence can help you reach any goal.
