Okay so. Realizing I had my own #bioessentialist moment when I assumed female presenting watch and ward would automatically have vaginas. That's on me. To think deeper,

(Wait, disclaimer: I do like that art and I am genuinely not trying to make any type of dig at the artist, Im just trying to like, think more broadly about this recent instance)

I believe my own automatic assumption is a part of the broader bigoted pattern of associating slender features/+breasts with the vulva, and implying that this is what a (real) woman looks like vs what a (real) man looks like. For instance, watch and ward could look virtually the same but still be women. Would appear as very masculine presenting/in the gender closet, however women nonetheless no matter the outward presentation, because all that determines your gender is yourself, and gender assumptions can (should) be disassociated with secondary sexual characteristics. This is my issue with seemingly neutral "gender" swaps vs (admittedly something i made up) "cis" swaps, because (the majority of the time) often what happens is artists and consumers remove or add "feminine" features to a character design and call them gender-swapped, thus feeding into that bigoted assumptions that no man has boobs/every woman has boobs

And Ive gotten off track, but yeah tl;dr: boobs =/= vaginas =/= Woman™️

I have another little headcanon about 24 teaching Gary how to drive. The dents and damage and cracked headlight on the Stanza? All from Gary running into things while he was learning. I could see 16 year old Gary getting into a minor fender bender with another car, and he’s pulling over to exchange info like a good kid, but 24’s like “Drive off! I don’t have insurance!”

Idk about other people, but when I see a fic with 1m+ words, I tend to think "how on earth can this be any good?" well. I must eat my own hat because truly, sincerely, genuinely, this RvB fic The Long Road Home is INCREDIBLE. It dives deep into character relationships (both standard (Carolina/Kimball, Tuckington, Frank²) and unique (Carolina&Tucker, the lieutenants, Kimball&Grey)), really chews into the political meat of the UNSC, goes hogwild with cool scifi shit and explains it so well, and singlehandedly made me care so much(!) about an OC (Fox, literally the coolest woman around) in 7 chapters flat. And action scenes are tight! packed! pure! tension!!!

If that isnt enough, Locus recently got a dog (im on chapter 29). I really appreciate how this fic expands on the end of s13 and the rest of the war against Charon!

AND HAS ABSOLUTELY KILLER ART!!!!!! the author is a truly capable artist the illustrations are so damn atmospheric

So!!! I would really recommend this fic! Yes, the word count is over a million, but with 79 chapters it averages less than 25k per chapter, and it starts off with a lower word count and builds up so its pretty easy to get into!

Hey there! Thanks for the ask. Sorry that it took me such a long time to complete this request; I have a life and it unfortunately has not been very pleasant this past odd month or so.

I didn't want to just draw them standing aimlessly in space so I made up some contrived scenario--Hank lost his watch and also Pete's there, LOL. I know the grass sucks and there should be a shadow from Pete's umbrella but I'm way too lazy to fix it. I'm really out of practice when it comes to just... basic perspective in landscapes which is really ironic if you've seen some of my more glamorous drawings.

More rambling about the drawing(s) and alternate versions under the cut. Tumblr sucks and won't let me upload the original scans so I had to upload screenshots... yay... the quality kinda tanked a bit but whatevs bro.

Did the bust illustration of Pete because I wasn't totally sure what my drawing style was going to be, the digitally colored version exists for that same reason. No-background and sketch version of the twofer--did not bother scanning the sketch, I am sick of that damn scanner.

I've been in a weird in-between stage when it came to art style for the past two or so years. I had a very distinct style in 2022-2023 but then I got a lot better at, just, everything basics-wise so I've been stuck trying to figure out what feels like my art after going from a considerably more abstract and sometimes cartoony style to what you see now. I also changed up my primary medium (went from ballpoint pen to pencil and ink) so that's been a learning curve.

I like what I've made here. The perspective of the background is all sorts of off and there should definitely be some sort of shadow being cast by Pete's umbrella but this already took so long and I don't care enough to be super nitpicky about it anymore. I like the detail of Dean's elbow hyperextending. Makes me think about one of the commentary tracks on one of the episodes of S1 where Doc and Jackson are so excited about the fact that they got to include Dean getting a headrush in their cartoon. Really fun, little, realistic details that I adore.
