accidentally remixed the roadtrip au for mc.76

jack morrison is the only son in the morrison family and he's rich as fuck, okay lives in a mansion has 1000 handmaids oh you know what? princeton rich His parents are almost never home. And they don't really care what their son is up to, all they really care about is when he is of age to take over the family company Until then he's a normal kid in a high end private school he has acquaintances sure but friends? nah.he's lonely. he's lonely as fuck he has a dog. his name is rocket. and that dog is probably jack's only friend enter jesse mccree! he's... also in school? probably? except half the time he isn't because he's out doing odd jobs of every kind to keep his family alive single mom and like 2 younger siblings. he's actually really smart, so that's a huge shame but what can he do?one day he's a little desperate for cash and sees that mansion in town.that looks fairly empty it's not as heavily guarded as it usually is he sees a small gap in the fence, a little opening, and he steels his resolve and slips through it and is startled by this really aggressive barking there is a very angry golden retriever right up in his face and he thinks he's dog feed until he hears a "heel!" behind him and both he and the dog turns the source of the voice; it's a young boy his age, can't discern any other facial features in the dark of night and the boy asks him, "why are you here?" with a tone that carries a warning and jesse's like, well, fuck."let me go," he says in the end"i didn't really mean to," he begins, "i just, needed money--" and the boy tilts his head. "Money?" He echoes. "Fine. Come with me" and at this point jesse is like, what the fuck. but stands up from the ground and follows this boy into his mansion, retriever growling at him but otherwise doing nothing to harm him and when they walk into the main foyer jesse can finally see the boy's features now; hair the color of sun and eyes the color of cornflowers and clothes that look a hell lot nicer than average and he swallows audibly they stop at what seems to be a room; a bedroom, jesse gathers. it's got bookshelves that line the walls and a bed too big for one person. A dog bed in the corner, a table, and personal paraphernalia he doesn't pay attention to because the boy then walks up to the desk and straight up pulls out a wad of cash and jesse's like ok what the FUCK and apparently he's said that loudly because the boy smiles-- is he amused?-- and says, "You said you wanted money. You can have this. It's part of my allowance, anyway, so what I do with it is up to me." And jesse's like is he thickheaded when i said that i meant I was going to stea land the boy just raises his eyebrows, "Well now you don't have to, I gave you the money so it's totally legit and you get to go home. Why's that so hard?" And jesse's like because. because aren't you gonna like get real mad and shit And the boy laughs again. "Mad? Well, I would have been, if you were a proper burglar. If anything, you are the most amusing thing that's happened to me in days, and I'm sure Rocket appreciates that too. Also, you just let me know that there's a hole in the fencing we need to fix. So, cash for your services." jesse leaves the mansion with a wad of cash and newfound interest for the boy dressed in silk pajamas.

when jesse comes back through the still unfixed hole the boy with sunshine hair is there before he can even look up "You know the front door's a thing, right?" Jesse just grins impishly. This is a lot more fun than the door. And the boy says, if you want to come by, you can just ring the doorbell. Are you here for money again? jesse always needs money tbh but that's not why he's here but he's too proud to admit that both that he always needs money and he's here to see this boy who's caught his interest They find themselves back in the bedroom again and he learns that the boy's name is jack morrison, and he's always bored cooped up in here and yes, he IS rich. His parents are also home maybe twice in a year for like half a day and then they fly away to wherever. He also gives jack his name and jack says, you can come back whenever.(edited) but use the door this time or i'll sic rocket on you Jesse laughs and mock salutes Jack. Yessir. Got it, sir. He doesn't actually come up to jack for a while because he's busy doing his  odd jobs and it's maybe a couple of weeks before he comes back the third time And when jack opens the door jesse thinks he sees a hint of... melancholy, drowned by some sort of relief, before his expression settles into a pleasant one once more "Took you a while. Come in." When they're at jack they play video games ("isn't this like limited edition?" "Well it wasn't that hard to get.") or jack is doing something and jesse is left playing with rocket But over time they develop some kind of weird companionship just like that And one day jesse just asks him, do you just live between this place and your school? jack shrugs but confirms that That's why you're always so bored, jesse says, let's fix that. It's almost summer break anyway And the first day of summer break jesse turns up in front of his house with... a van. "Do you even HAVE a van?" Jack muses aloud. "And can you even drive one?" "No and yes." Jesse grins. "Hop in."

in the road trip jesse takes jack to a market for the first time jack doesn't know how much things cost and most importantly, CANNOT HAGGLE jesse facepalms. jack also learns what it means to spend the night away from like. High thread count sheets at first it's funny to jesse but then jack actually genuinely has a hard time sleeping so jesse stays up with him they talk until sunrise and the trip is momentarily delayed they talk about everything under the sun and jack learns about jesse; they're the same age, senior year in hs, and he's poor and no, he didn't quite steal this van but he did borrow it from a neighbor (jack doesn't question past that.) jesse learns that jack... is just lonely. No, jack never said it. But it's in his eyes and in the way he talks and it's everywhere, like a cape draped on his back, fastened with a touch of melancholy and on jack's head sits a crown of responsibilities on his throne of riches and truly, it's lonely at the top and jesse feels for him, how can someone live in a cage like that? he almost says come with me, and you'll be free but catches his tongue, realizes he can't just say that but also underneath the air of bossy heir jack is also funny, charming, adorable when he's not getting the Plebeian Lifestyle right and jesse thinks he might just have fallen headfirst for someone that's way out of his league. jack learns that jesse barely goes to school but he's got a certain air of smarts about him that's nothing like being book smart, that jesse's so outspoken and brave in ways he isn't and he's also actually kind of handsome, what the heck? jack just Knows that if jesse had lived a better life, had more opportunities, he would go places and jack feels for him but realizes that he may have fallen for someone that's in a different world than his. (they resolutely do not talk about the one night mid trip that they spent on the rooftop of the van, blanket spread under them and around them as jack actually sees stars for the first time that's not in books because they sky is so clear and he's so amazed) (jesse especially doesn't think about how jack turned to him, eyes bright, "Do you see this? How awesome this is? How beautiful this is?" because no, he thinks dumbly, too busy watching you.) (jack definitely does not recall the time he got too excited and they almost fall ass over teakettle from the roof of the van but he's now staring at jesse, brown locks on the blanket they spread and he's, he's towering above jesse and their lips are so close, maybe-- ) (neither of them dwells on how, if any of them had moved just a little closer the distance between their lips would have been a grand total of zero) (and how they didn't do that and apologize and pull away, how they stared at everything else but each other, and how they're back on the road the morning after as if that totally did not just happen.) (summer break is drawing to a close and so is their trip and while jack and jesse shared a lot of things) (jack did NOT tell jesse that after graduation, his parents are coming to whisk him away to god knows where to take up the mantle of the family company) (and when jesse comes up to the mansion where jack resides and rings the bell the one who opens it is a maid who tells him that jack has left a couple of hours ago and no, he's not coming back.) (how could jack have told him that? he doesn't have the heart to. he wanted to make it a good moment for the both of them, couldn't mar it with the reality that was looming over him) (and so he gave up a goodbye for an uninterrupted eight weeks of freedom that he's never had in his life, and probably never will ever again.)

jack's away doing whatever it is and resolutely not thinking of jesse jesse, realizing that if he's ever gonna find jack he's going to have to enter the world of suits and shit but he doesn't wanna do that. he's like. how am i going to find jack. fast forward like a decade? jesse's got a decent job now he can actually support his family he went back and got his GED and like got a decent education in the end it's not ideal, but he manages to support his family and one day he's walking down the street and it's raining, right and he's like great. i don't even have an umbrella and he's stuck under the roof of this convenience store till it clears. the doors of the store slide behind him and suddenly there's an umbrella over his head and jesse hears, "We can share an umbrella. Do you need to be somewhere?" and when he turns around it's that boy with hair the color of sun and eyes the color of cornflower and he's smiling at him "It's been a while, hasn't it?" It certainly fucking has, Jesse thinks, as he grabs the other man's tie and finally did the thing they did not a good decade or so ago.

welcome back, welcome home

[ they sit under the curtain of night wrapped by swathes of silence. a breeze blows past and ruffles their hair; a distance away from them is a wooden sign, worn with age but still standing. "welcome back"; the words greet whoever drives back into the town.

(the words feel less like a greeting and more of an ominous knell.)

"what's got you so quiet?" yuuji asks. their shoulders are touching; victoria is asleep in the backseat. yuuji shifts his gaze to stare at tobio's hands, resting on his lap.

they're empty, yuuji thinks. he'd like to place his own in them.

he doesn't.

"nothing." tobio replies, slow and somber.

summer's drawing to a close, and so is their road trip. if yuuji drives just a couple hundred meters forward, they're going to pass that sign, welcome home.

"if you say so." yuuji says after a beat of silence; he knows what's on tobio's mind, cause it's on his, too, but neither want to voice it out loud.

"kiss me before the day rolls over, kiss me for the first and last time"

is what yuuji wants to say.

"i had fun." is what he says instead.

(the quiet "me too" he hears is almost enough to fill the sudden void in his too-empty heart

but "almost" is as far as he's going to get

Wonderful characterization, lots of hurt/comfort, believable and tragic and perfect. Warning for gore, I’m not kidding.

☆rainbowLivinda (aka @gaylussacia) for Spiral Down and Back Around, an AU where Sam and friends help Josh get through the darkest period of his life by showing him love and support he deserves. Perfect mixture of fluff and angst. Complete.

they’re sitting down side by side on the rooftop of their (stolen) van, two pairs of eyes transfixed on the night sky. it had taken terushima ages and then some to convince kageyama that it’s completely alright to climb up, it’s not that hard, let me give you a hand.

terushima isn’t a stranger to the view. when he was at an age that’s frankly too young to be escaping his house for the umpteenth time that week, he’s always found shelter beneath the curtains of night, drinking in the calm and forgetting his worries.

what is new to him, however, is the sudden trail of light he spots just out of the corner of his eye streaking past them.

“did you know you can make wishes on shooting stars?” terushima says absently,

what he expects is a slight head-tilt (the one terushima always notices kageyama do whenever he’s puzzled), wide eyes and an answer in the negative.

what he gets instead from kageyama is slightly flustered look, reminiscent of a deer caught in the headlights, before the younger male averts his eyes and mumbles “i made a wish just now.”

terushima’s eyes fly open. no amount of badgering had yielded any answer, but as they’re back in the van and settled to sleep, terushima hears something so faint he’d have missed it if he wasn’t paying attention.

“i wished that i could spend more time with you after the trip.”

That was the end of that. Kageyama said nothing else afterwards, and for a little while there was really no more discussion on the matter. As if Oikawa had never brought it up in the first place.
