‘ you make me proud. ‘ ‘ is this home? ‘ at least i get to see you one last time. ‘

Prue waited for the but or the sarcastic comment that usually accompany any praise Sam sees fit to give her, already coming up with a few witty quips she can hit him back with. But as he stays silent, the brunette raises her eyes to meet his, a pleased smile spreading through her red lips.

“It seems our study sessions are finally beginning to pay off.”

“Yep.” the house is too big for her and Cora, but her parents bought it before she had a chance to say goodbye to her friends back in England. It was a nice house and her parents had meant well, but the endless empty space only served to remind her of the messy home she left behind  – of the people she left behind… of him.

“Come on in. I’m sure Cora would love to see you.”

“I’m not dying.” She was leaving him though. She was leaving everyone. “I’ll be back… I don’t think this is going to be forever, and this battle… it can’t last forever either. My parents are worried about me. We are living in the middle of a very dangerous place.” if someone had told her a few years ago that Hogsmeade would become one of the most dangerous places to live in England, she would have laughed in their faces. But it is, and her parents will no longer allow her to put herself in danger; they aren’t going to risk the possibility of losing another daughter. 

Running her fingers through his jaw, Prue smiled sadly at Sam. “I… No, this isn’t goodbye.” she said  firmly shaking her head, “We will see each other again. You’re not getting rid of me this easily.”

“oh.” she hummed resting her forehead against his, ignoring the looks they were gathering. they were in a remote corner of the living room, but johanna’s screeching had made every eye in the room turn towards them. it was also her fault this happened; she was the one who put mistletoe all around the place. 

of course, prue and sam ended up underneath one. it was just like her to do something like this. not that prue was complaining, on the contrary. “i love you too MacLeod.”

shaking her head, lily pressed another kiss against norah’s lips, one of her hands falling to the blonde’s waist to pull her closer. “no, i don’t have a six feet tall boyfriend.” she murmured against her lips. “do you have any more questions or can i go back to kissing you senseless, cause i was really enjoying that.”

“will it?” she asks cocking her head to the side, not believing his words. a few years ago she might have agreed with him or let his idealism sway her. but it’s been a while since she believed in things like love. 

what has it been – one year?  two years? or did she stop believing in love when she broke his heart? “i hope you are right, harry longbottom.”

“if i am a drama queen, you are the drama king.” which lily now realizes would make them married… huh, not a bad line of thought. wait. terrible line of thought. shaking her head, she pushes those thoughts away, realizing belatedly that harry is talking. 

“hmm…. oh, hmmm. yeah, summer, transfiguration. yeah, i was a bit lost. i used my brother’s old books to figure out what the hell i was supposed to do.” chuckling at his reaction, lily playfully nudges his shoulder. “look! it’s another appearance from hogwarts’s resident drama king! we will study together, and this time you won’t have to spend hours trying to teach me herbology! we can actually focus on other subjects this time.” 

“Well you must be rubbing off on me,” he grinned, trying to suppress a laugh. “Or maybe it was all those dramatic types over the summer as well. Watch out, your crown is in danger!” He proclaimed, holding his arm out dramatically. 

“Herbology was the only subject I ever was able to actually give you any advice on, now what are you going to keep me around for, ‘cause I know it’s not my street cred.” He laughed, feeling lighter already at being back on the way to school. It had been too long since he had seen Lily, and in all of the rush of excitement that that summer had been, he hadn’t really had time to realise how much he had missed his best friend. “Frank keeps tellin me horror stories about how hard itll be, but I don’t know how much he’s joking.”

“apparition and flying are very different things! just ‘cause you suck at flying doesn’t mean you won’t be able to apparate.” though she kinda hopes they are similar because it will make it easier for her to get it right. “but hey, if you fail your test, i don’t mind giving you lifts.” in one phrase she was able to flirt with him and be cocky about her own skills, never say lily luna can’t multi-task.

“hey, i don’t remember, did you mention which films they are showing today?”

“Oh come off it, they’re all about... co-ordination and stuff, surely? And you’ll be fine at it, you being all talented and clever and good at stuff.” Hal teased, his ears tinged with pink at the idea of Lily having to escort him around by side-along apparition. It wasn’t as though he had tonnes of male pride, but all the same. 

“Oh. I think it’s a load of supposedly classic muggle films from like... last century? One of them... it’s called something like Singing in the Rain? Dad got really excited about it when I mentioned it, he almost crashed our date.”

i have said something about you! gods, are you even listening to me? i have told them about sam, sam – the guy who spends a lot of time around the house, one of my best friends, my study buddy… are you pleased?

He nods, still feeling petulant. He’s not pleased, but he doesn’t know why. Or what he’d have wanted her to say. “Yeah... Ok.”

“…. you got me there.” lily raised her arms in front of her when he started getting frustrated, pretending to be all apologetic about what was going on, but really just amused at his reaction. 

“all right, all right. i won’t ask anymore questions if it bothers you so much. in fact, i am never going to ask anything else. is that okay with you? or should i just be quiet from now on? i can always leave if that will make you feel better? i finally understand my mom, teenagers are so moody. remind me to send her an owl about it, oh, wait, i don`t wanna bother you. believe me, this is the last time i am gonna take an interest in your life.”  she said dramatically, crossing her arms over her chest. 

a perk of being very overly dramatic about a small thing? the fact she can now pretend she didn’t hear the other things he said. 

Hal huffed, folding his arms over his chest in response. After a minute, he sighed heavily, and reached out, nudging her with his foot “Drama queen.”

“Go on then. What are you looking forward to most about being back? Oh. And did you understand that transfiguration summer work at all? Because I had an absolute nightmare with it.” He grimaced. “Had to get one of the seventh years who was around to give me a hand, and apparently I was completely wrong about pretty much everything before that point. I’m doomed, Lily. Dooooooomed,” he groaned in a long, teasing voice.

“and they say we are the ones with magic! that sounds incredible.” 

“just a little killing? please?” she begged giving him puppy dog eyes. the expression lasted only seconds on her face before she dissolved into giggles. following him into the bus, she dragged him towards the back, not that there was a lot of people in the front, it was just nicer to be in the back of the bus. “these look good.” she said sitting down in the window seat, petting the adjacent one for him to join her. 

“i can’t want to be able to apparate. complete freedom!!

“Just you wait, honestly, it’s fantastic! And apparently you can get loads of different types of flavours if you buy really fancy brands, but I don’t know what...” He sat next to her, after handing over a fistful of change, with a smile. “Yeaah. Apparating will be so cool. Although I don’t know if I should be allowed. We know how bad my track record is even with flying...” He bit his lip, suddenly plagued by the idea that he might never get the hang of apparition.

“you really think i would do something like that?” now, technically she wouldn’t, but would she hint at it? oh, yes. she would. “because we have never spent this long apart! i feel like i have missed a part of your life,” and come on, he got all sexy over the summer, it must be for a girl, “i am your best friend! i am curious about what i missed.”

“don’t you worry, i didn’t spend this summer recharging for no reason! it’s time for me to get out there more. i have a great group of friends in slytherin, that’s true, but outside of my house my only friend if you… now, i’m not saying i am gonna hold hands with a ravenclaw any time soon, but there are some pretty cool hufflepuffs running around the school. who knows?” oh well, she is going to at least try, but if she runs into any of her family members, she might run back to her dorm, which is a stupid decision because this fight just gets longer the more she prolongs it, but lily is not known for her social smarts. if only making friends was as easy as making potions.

“I think you’re forgetting that I know you better than anyone,” Hal huffed, waggling his eyebrows at her. “And I’m honestly telling you that you haven’t missed anything because I’ve just told you it!” He was a little frustrated now. “I’m not going to bore you by describing what I had for breakfast every day! It’s stupid. I had a really good time. I met so many really cool people -  who are all crazy talented, and I think it made me a much better performer.”

“Brilliaaaant,” Hal grinned.. “Oh come on Lils. You know that whole ‘everyone hates Slytherins’ thing is a load of rubbish, right? Plus we’re seventh years now. Everyone’s grown up since first year! I’m telling you, we go to a couple of photos, we have a great time!” He was already planning it in his head, how everything would go smoothly, how Lily might finally realise nobody was out to persecute her. “There’s usually a couple of sneaky parties around the start of term. Settles down after that, we can go back to normal then.”

lily glows when he says he brought the chocolate. “hmm, yes. but how are we going to make it? i don’t think the ministry will accept ‘we wanted popcorn for our date’ as a good reason for using magic in front of muggles.”

“i am going to kill them.” she announces with a smile on her lips, lifting her wand, she calls for the bus, which promptly appears in front of them. “come on! let’s get out of here before they decide to follow us.”

Hal gave a small laugh, understanding her confusion. “No, no. It’s ok. At muggle stores you can get it ready popped and flavoured. How cool is that?!” He beamed. “I kind of got super-addicted to it when I was away last summer,” he admitted. With a grin. 

“Nooo killing,” he groaned, even if there was still a smile on his face, but alright, let’s go!” The Knight Bus’ arrival, as ever scared the life out of him. But he climbed on board. “Regent’s Park London Please,” he instructed the man standing lazily in the door way as though it hadn’t just hurtled out of thin air. “Come on,” he added to Lily, hooking in his pocket to try and dig out the required wizard change, “Let’s go grab some seats.”
