It was a joke based on how Brexit is currently/potentially screwing things over in the UK. Loads of businesses are temporarily losing funding (like UNIT, they haven’t been disbanded). whilst all current trade deals are up in the air and nobody knows where they stand with anything. God, Merlin is so freaking creepy. Everything he does gives off a very suspicious, weird energy... Everytime I see him I get sick, I just hate him so much.

Honestly, I’m glad I’m not alone feeling like this. At first, I thought theweird vibe I was getting from him was just part of the fact I was binge-watchingthe show at 3am with the impelling doom of an exam a few hours away but now Iknow there was more to that.

I wanna be real with you for asecond, I don’t think he’s a bad written character or a “bad character” in general in the most common sense of the word. Notnecessarily at least, that’ssomething that heavily depends on the way they’regonna handle things later on in my opinion, on what else we are going todiscover. There is more to this story I’mcertain of it.

The thing that disturbed me themost about him is the way he “infiltrated” himself into the gang’s life turning it upside down not inthe name of trust but of blind obedience to a supposedly higher power he didn’t even have anymore. And that hedesperately wanted back. I like to think that it was meant to be that way, we-as viewers- were meant to feel their shock as our own.

Blinky having to deal with thisselfish, patronizing man, such a stark contrast to the wise wizard he idolized probablyall his life. A man who doesn’t careabout humans and humanity like he does, a man who doesn’t care if his surrogate son gets hurt or killed. Who doesn’t care full stop. Clairefinding herself in the presence of yet another supposedly immortal being, one that-for all they know- outmatched her torturer in power and strength and who callsher ‘beautiful creature’ and ‘my dear’, who touches her without her consentjust like Morgana did. Toby who’s usedto think the best of everyone and who gets so easily excited just to be turneddown at every occasion, mocked and dismissed like he wasn’t the one fighting by his best friend’s side from the very start. And Jimwho endured so much already and was able to shoulder the weight of both words thanksto the kindness of his heart, thanks to his humanity. And now the man whoinvested him with such power and responsibility is telling him that that samehumanity makes him weak and that he’s neverbeen enough. And still he takes from him, leaving him bare.

If this all leads to building upa character we’ll get to know better inWizards then I’m gonna wait and see. Otherwisehe’ll stay the presumptuous, selfish,insufferable old man who let a sixteen year old boy sacrifice everything so hedidn’t have to.

Also, Merlin definitely doesn’t care about humanity. If you take all the tie-in media as canon, Trollhunters existed for many millennia before the Pact was signed. Kilfred encouraged the trollmarket trolls to eat humans, and Merlin went “shrug.” Tel-Ur was driven to supporting Gunmar by the obligations of the amulet (and probably by personally meeting Merlin at some point). And Merlin didn’t give a shit. He probably thought a civil war between Gunmar and Orlagk would weaken the Gum-Gums as a whole. Jim from the future had to show up and give the amulet to a cinnamon roll of a Trollhunter.

And he also made more unneeded future telling murals that anyone could find, that led the team to believe Blinky was going to die (good job Merlin, psychologically traumatizing everyone back in season 2). And alright, those murals were what allowed Borgus to come up with the triumbric stones, but there was probably an easier way. Or that might just all be Borgus’ fault.

Throwing my two cents in; I think Jim’s vespa is a good example of this. Jim was clearly upset when Merlin destroyed it because he ‘needed better materials’, Jim explained why it meant so much to him (that he and Blinky had built it together), hell even Blinky got mad on Jim’s behalf if I’m remembering right and Merlin just...didn’t care.

He was just so blasé about the whole thing I wanted to just slap him in the face.

And the fact that he made out that he was doing them a favour in the long run.: ‘yes I destroyed one of your most cherished possessions but look! Armour for your friends! Don’t you want your friends to be safe whilst I send you all on a suicide mission whilst I hide up here and wait to see if you succeed?!?’

Nobody else’s feelings or wellbeing mattered so long as it got him one step closer to his goal.
