The corners of Patrik’s lips turned down a little at the girl’s uncertainty and his eyes flickered in the same direction of hers. They all looked like they were enjoying themselves, but maybe they were just drunk. Looking back at Laura he shrugged his shoulders. “I mean, there’s only one way to find out, right?”
Laura chuckled and smiled at him. “I guess you’re right. Wanna try it out?” She asked him. She shrugged. “What’s the worst that could happen?” Laura asked.
“Wait wait wait, so you’re telling me people get given these shitty little imitation rifles and have to shoot the ducks down? And you get a stuffed toy at the end of it?” Patrik asked the person next to him as he stood in front of the shooting gallery. “It doesn’t sound that hard.”
Laura shrugged and smiled at the other. “I guess so, it seems like it I guess.” She glanced over at the other group of people. “It seems like fun, I mean. I’m not sure how much fun it actually is, though.”
“Oh!” Coralie folded the book closed with a soft thump, and looked from it to the newcomer, and back again. It was a used copy, well-loved, dog-eared in places Coralie could appreciate. There were probably other copies, but she’d checked the pages someone else had lovingly folded, and they were good. Memorable moments from what had become a classic, and if whoever this was hadn’t read it before…well, Coralie had read it when its author couldn’t even publish under her own name, and she’d be happy to share it with someone who could appreciate it anew. “No, please, you take it.” She held the book out in offering, “Have you read it before?”
Laura smiled at the other woman and nodded. “Thank you so much. Appreciate it.” She held her hand out for the book and tucked it under her arm. “Actually, yeah... I’ve read it once before.” She smiled at her. “Although, I haven’t read it in a while... I need it for one of my classes.” Laura replied.
Chloe pictured floating in a kiddie pool and laughed at the idea. “Hey, you could get a slip-n-slide,” she suggested. At the mention of iced coffee, she made a humming noise in agreement. “Right? I mean, I love hot coffee, but on a real hot day, ice coffee is just so refreshing.”
Laura nodded. “I could see that. A slip-n-slide sounds like fun. I’m sure my younger siblings would love that.” She smiled at the woman. “Iced coffee is really good, I agree. Well, I mean... I know we have different flavours, more exciting than caramel or vanilla.” She replied. “There’s white chocolate, mint... honestly. There’s more but I really can’t remember them right now.” She said with a laugh.

It was after the basket auction and Laura hadn’t really heard much from Rohan since their date. They exchanged numbers and she enjoyed herself but she figured he was busy trying to find his own place to live. To be fair, she was busy starting a new job and her siblings needed a lot more attention now that school was out. So instead of waiting around, she sent him a text asking if he wanted to get coffee with her. Luckily, he agreed. Laura sat patiently at the shop, with a few different options. She smiled when he sat down across from her.
“Hi, I wasn’t sure what kind of coffee you liked. So I got a bunch of them.” She replied with a smile.
“Awesome.” Motioning with her hand, Dylan started their journey, skimming through a few light eateries she knew of close by. The list wasn’t large but she’d done her fair share of exploring when she’d first arrived. “I know that,” she chuckles. “Sometimes you just get so invested in something that you forget to eat and then it’s six at night and you’ve had zero food for the day.”
Laura laughed and nodded. “That happens to me a lot, actually. Especially when I’m invested in a good book or I’ve been working at the coffee shop all day.” She replied. Laura glanced over at the other girl and cleared her throat. “So, uh. Have you decided if you wan to get a job yet or anything?” She asked.
There was something about bookstores; something even better about small, privately-owned bookstores. It was in the smell of dust and paper, and they way odds and ends could be found tucked in various corners, or wedged on unlikely shelves. Coralie loved it when there were as many tables stacked with crooked book towers as there were bookshelves. She loved it when the edges of the pages were turning yellow with age, and the corners were dog-eared and well-loved. Coralie loved bookstores.
Which is why it was no surprise to find her spending a late Thursday evening at Wicked Good Books, tucked back in the stacks with her fingers running lightly along the spines of the fiction section, a content smile on her face. It was just the right kind of quiet, only the occasional shuffle and ring of the front door’s bell to signal other customers coming and going breaking the silence. It left room for her to wonder; wonder about the new town she’d found herself in, and all of the little pieces she’d explored that made it what it is.
And how this was probably one of her favorite pieces so far, in the running with the historical museum, and the university. For the first time since she’d arrived, her shoulders dropped, the tension eased, and she pulled a book off the shelf, just getting lost in the intro to an old Brontë novel when the ring of the bell pulled half of her attention.
Laura smiled as the bell ringed when she walked in. For a few minutes, she walked around the store. She saw a woman with glasses, reading the book that Laura needed. She smiled and nodded towards the book. “Hey, that book. Are you buying it?” She asked her politely. “I was thinking about getting it.” She replied with a small smile. “If not, I can ask and see if they have another copy.”
Zach slowly nodded his head. “I understand. And i’m sure your boss didn’t get too mad at you for it.” he commented, offering the younger woman a smile. “I’m sure you do just fine at the job though. You’ll get far better at balancing the food the longer you’re there I bet.” he offered, trying to be encouraging.
Laura smiled at Zach and nodded. “Thanks, Zach. I appreciate it. You’ve always been nicer to me than I deserved.” She laughed. “I remember Juliette and I used to bother you so much when we were younger. I’m surprised you even talk to me now.” She said and shook her head. “I’m glad we kind of grew out of that phase.” Laura shook her head.
“What you’re telling me is I can spend the entire summer drinking iced coffee until I reach, and then pass, the point where my blood stops becoming blood and instead is made out of iced coffee instead and that’s a great idea? Because I’ll do it.” He made a ridiculous leap picking out a tiny piece of what she’d said to him. “Not sleeping until October may be a mild side effect but that’s a risk I’m willing to take.”
Laura shrugged. “I mean, the choice is defiantly up to you.” She replied. “I’m just letting you know so you can make an informed decision.” Laura said with a smile. “I mean, I personally wouldn’t recommend that but I could defiantly recommend at least a few coffees a week.” Laura said. “Besides, an iced coffee really never hurt anybody.” She chuckled.
“Well aren’t you the prettiest little thing I ever did see,” Juliette mocked with a horrible attempt at a Southern accent as she walked with a bit of pep in her step, jumping up from one step to the next before venturing inside the house to come face-to-face with her childhood friend. “And for me?” Nope, she clearly wasn’t finished with that piss-poor attempt at a Southern drawl once she extended her reach to grab for the paper bag filled with food that she could smell the moment Laura stepped foot in the door. “Do you want to eat outside?” She inquired with a gesture towards the backdoor she had just come waltzing through. “And no one else is here so more food for us.”
Laura rolled her eyes and smiled. “Outside sounds great, let’s go.” She nodded and followed her friend towards the door. Laura smiled and shrieked. “Good, I was hungry too.” She walked outside and placed the bag on the small table and looked back at Juliette. “So, what’s going on? How’s the job?” She asked her friend.
Luna’s stomach turned to knots, even with the assurance that it was nothing serious. As Laura continued, though, a small sense of relief washed over her. She didn’t want to lose Laura as a friend. She didn’t want to lose anyone as a friend over this. “Thank you. That means more to me than you know.” She gave a small smile back, leaning against the counter. “I’m sorry I stayed away so long. It just…hurt going to the coffee shop. And I didn’t know how everyone would be with me.” It hurt to think of all the fun times she’d had there, or how people she called friends might think of her now. “I’ve missed you, though. I wanted to text a million times, but I always chickened out.” She gave a short laugh at her uncertainty. “Can I make up for it with a free morning pastry?”
Laura nodded. “I get that. It’s hard to go into work sometimes too. I mean, sometimes I wonder if I’m better off quitting and just working more at my new job.” Laura sighed. “Anyways.” She shrugged. Laura smiled at Luna and nodded. “Well you could have defiantly texted me, Luna. I would have replied and even brought you a coffee.” She chuckled. Laura nodded and leaned towards on one of the glass counters. “I defiantly think that’ll make up for it. Especially if there’s a chocolate one.” She replied.
Basking in the summer heat, Chloe laid on the grass in the park, turning to the person beside her. “Every single day of the year should be summer. Don’t you agree?”
Laura shrugged. “I mean, I don’t know about that. It gets rather hot quickly here and I know I really wish I had a pool. You can buy those kiddie ones but it’s not the same as the real thing.” She said with a laugh. “But I know ice coffee is cheaper in the summer.”
sleepless nights - Elena
“Okay… so I thought that seeing as it was summer and all this might not be too bad of a dare, maybe even enjoyable but I was so, so wrong,” August groaned as he tried to push his curls from his face as water poured off it.
Laura chuckled and shoved her sweater in the others direction. “Here, you can use my sweater!” She cried out. “It has to be washed anyways.” She replied with a small shrug. “Why would you think that’s a good idea?” Laura asked him with another small laugh.
It was hot. Too hot. Every winter he wished for summer and every summer he wished for winter, there was no reason. Tugging at the collar of his shirt to try and get more air onto his chest he downed what was left in his water bottle. “I take back what I said about wanting summer. Give me back winter, I miss it. Why isn’t it more socially acceptable to dive into the nearest pool throughout the day and go around completely soaking wet? It would help, it really would.”
Laura smiled and chuckled. “If it makes you feel any better, iced coffee is only a dollar all summer where I work.” She replied. “It’s probably worth it with the heat, at least.” She shrugged. “I mean, only if you like coffee.”
Rohan looked at her for a moment. “You’ve never left this town?” he questioned. It wasn’t completely hard to believe as travel required time and money, but he still had a hard time imagining a life where he never left his hometown, never got to see some of what the world have to offer. “One day hopefully then, i’ll cross my fingers for you.” he offered with a grin. With a nod of his head, he listened as she spoke of his family. “I’m glad that your siblings are like that. Family…family should always be there to support you.” he commented. “Mmm, it’s all milk chocolate but there are different fillings. Caramel, mint, raspberry.”
Laura shrugged. “No, it’s unfortunate, I know.” She took another sip of her wine and smiled at Rohan. He was being so kind to her, which she was so not used to. Laura wasn’t sure if he was just being nice to her because of his sister or because he actually genuinely wanted to keep hanging out with her. “It’s nice.” She replied with a nod. “For the most part anyways.” She replied. Laura nodded and took another bite of the chocolate. “Well, it’s delicious. I’ve never had chocolate like this before.”
“Mm, so you’re balancing school and two jobs?” he questioned, studying her for a moment. Zach was aware of how hard each member of the Wilde family worked just to be able to pay their bills. “Well I hope that the owner of Hell’s Kitchen gives you a free meal each shift. And maybe even left overs when you head home. Otherwise, why work in food service?” he asked with a chuckle.
Laura nodded. “Yeah, Jack told me I shouldn’t but the coffee shop is slower during the summer and I basically begged Melody for the job. I dropped a tray of food a few days ago, I almost cried.” She shook her head. Laura laughed and smiled at Zach. “I mean, free food is good food, so I would have to agree with you on that one.”
