elle and emmett’s secret handshake reblog if you agree
I re-watched Legally Blonde The Musical yesterday and I am obsessed with a certain handful of bars.
It's from a cute ballad that I normally skip over it because it's called "Legally Blonde". I get second hand embarrassment every time they sing the title. It just feels lame and cringe-y.
But I have been SLEEPING on this MAGNIFICENCE!
Christian Borle's inflection on "how much I want you to stay". Ugh. Sweet, sweet ear candy. And of course, Laura Bell Bundy is, was and always will be amazing.
Don't mind me, I'm just gonna go rack up hundreds of plays on this song that I used to despise.
Wait but we should talk about this because I also was like ‘ew really’ with the title until I had time to really think about it. I’ve always loved the song because hello???? Laura Bell Bundy & Christian Borle singing??? Together????
But the way Elle is like ‘just let me be legally blonde’ which is the insult Callahan throws at her and in this song she’s like ‘fine maybe that’s all I am, maybe he’s right, maybe my looks are the only thing that people see’ even though at this point her entire wardrobe is navy and she’s toned herself down to fit in but then we get to Legally Blonde Remix and the line is ‘go show em who’s legally blonde’ and ‘don’t be afraid to be legally blonde’ and ‘you’ve got a right to be legally blonde’ and how it’s essentially Elle throwing that insult back at Callahan and turning it into embracing both sides of her, knowing she doesn’t have to compromise on her true self to succeed???? MASTERPIECE.
Possibly a hot take, but I believe with all my soul that Legally Blonde the musical is the superior Legally Blonde over the movie
I’m back on my legally blonde videoessay bullshit and my current obsession that’s probably not making it into the video I’d the progression from

To the final broadway version. Like isn’t it insane how it had nothing to do with love originally. Like, in biased and like when it’s “how about love?“ but this is so precious and works so amazing for door-less productions I can’t!!! The instrumentation picking up!!! The profound sadness and Emmet not knowing!!!! (The way they deal with that is Definitely worse tho, I’m not shilling for Vivian telling him, not me)
But still it’s so!!!!!
hi! hope you are well :) and this is perfect timing bc I am also back on my legally blonde obsession haha
but yeah the San Francisco run doesn't have Elle tell Emmett what happened so he instead finds out through Vivienne which is quite strange especially since Elle does tell Emmett what Callahan did to her in the movie. So at the end of the ballad, Emmett is confused about why Elle wants to leave, finds out about the assault off-stage, and through a second party instead of through Elle herself which not only makes things feel less impactful but is also offensive (I am not sure if I am using the right term) to Elle - she is the victim in this situation and thus this is her story to tell not Vivienne's
but what I really love about the San Francisco version of the ballad is how the music swells after Elle shuts the door. And you see Emmett rushing to the door and calling out to her multiple times - ahhh it is so heartbreaking!! I do sometimes wish they kept that in somehow though of course I love the final Broadway version with all of my heart - "what about love?" "some girls were just meant to smile" 😭
here is a clip of an early san francisco version of the ballad scene for anyone who wishes to watch it:
also does anybody know what emmett is holding here?? I can't figure it out???
anyway wishing you the best of luck with your video essay!! so excited to watch it :)
#I don’t think anyone cares at this point#but emmett is holding a game boy#because of the Tetris line via @laurenlpz
omigod thank you!! but also what is the tetris line?
In one of the San Fran runs instead of the ‘no-one’s called me butthead since the third grade’ line, Emmett says ‘butthead? Really? I haven’t heard that gem since I played Tetris on a daily basis’ and Elle replies ‘you still play Tetris on a daily basis’ to which Emmett says ‘but I love it so much’ then the dialogue goes back to normal :)

In The Middle Of The Night by Billy Joel just came on the radio at work and I time traveled back to Darren and Mia's wedding. New Starkid fans will never understand being in the trenches pre-engagement when that Meredith post hit the timeline XD.
Omg!! Truly you had to be there because with the way they are now it’s like yeah what’s the big deal but the post itself and then Joey reposting specifically the story with the richpez tag on it when Meredith posted multiple stories he could have reposted instead…. huge day!!!!
And @laurenlpz got to be witness to me losing my mind over it and that’s very special
Privileged to have been there with you 🫡
Lauren and Joey finish singing Granger Danger for the third time at the London Palladium. Raucous applause, never gets old. Lauren starts walking offstage. Joey’s still there. “Wait, don’t go…”
This is just another opportunity for me to think they’re gonna sing Priceless
Thinking a lot about how after AVPW in 2018 I literally thought I’d never be that happy again and now I’m seeing Starkid at the London Palladium with two friends I made that weekend as a continuation of truly one of the best years of my life and I WILL cry
