A line that is both optimistic and pessimistic. It is a positive notion to want to create a better future for future generations, a future that is open and accepting, but the cost is the death of your own dream, or the loss of any hope that you can change the present.

An interesting way to end the movie that effectively serves to ask the audience reflect on the film itself. We’re left wondering why this is her last entry, whether it is because no one is listening anyways, there’s so much to say and she’s tired of trying to get white people to see what they’re blind to, or if she doesn’t feel like she’s making any real change. Or maybe it’s a way to force the audience to reflect on their own lives.

It’s important to think about the root of the problem. Why have white people come to believe that they are superior and why does this idea continue to prevail? Race is a socially constructed concept. There are no subspecies of AMH. So why do we separate people based on the color of their skin?
Interdependency between women is the way to a freedom which allows the I to be, not in order to be used, but in order to be creative.

This is one of the lines that I chose to focus on when writing my research paper. It is important that women rely on one another and attempt to understand life from one another’s perspective in order for change to be made. Lorde wants her audience to focus less on feminism as it relates to men and to instead focus on other women.

I love this verse because it motivates everyone (but particularly black people) to work hard to achieve their dreams and goals.
I like this line because Beyonce is emphasizing the importance of persistence. When everyone else is against you trying to stop you from reaching your goals, you just have to work that much harder and want it that much more.

Franny Choi’s “To the Man Who Shouted” was by far my favorite prime resource that we focused on throughout this semester. The spoken word poem just has so much emotion, especially in this line when she criticizes a man who thinks that he owns a woman, because to him she is nothing but an object.

This quote represents the implications of what happens when an individual or a group feels like that in order to better themselves or to obtain a position of power/statue they need to put down another individual or group when doing so. In this example, the result is a matter of life or death.

“Nothing has kept us safe. Why? Because these problems are not caused by OUR choices. The murderous conditions under which we live are not of our own making; they white-authored. Whites insisted that the practices supporting whiteness would not just support whiteness but also do everything imaginable to rob everyone else of life chances.”

This is a very interesting claim by Mitchell. It’s hard not to agree to her point mainly because there is a lot of truth to it. Minorities make up a very small percentage of the Senate. As policy makers, minorities have far less ability to affect change that would allow progress with the goal of equality in mind.
I think that although the belief that minorities have little potential to change the marginalization of their group it is a saddening thought, what Mitchell is really trying to say here is that white people need to step up to the plate, take responsibility, educate themselves on the experiences of minorities, and use their privilege to change the current situation America finds herself in.

I feel like this is another quote that highlights the importance social media plays in modern day activism. While some people believe that #hashtag activism is not a real form of activism, I think that these kinds of movements can create and inspire real change.

Can’t help but like John Oliver’s way of putting this. The ridiculous clips and information about how easy it is for police to get military equipment they are not at all trained to use.
I also like how he phrased this as well as how he used a metaphor to get his point across. By comparing the police force’s obsession with military equipment to a child’s obsession with their toys, he highlights how ridiculous it is that they are ignoring the fact that the equipment is not supposed to be a means of entertainment.

Many have disparaged hashtag activism as a poor substitute for “real” activism, and, indeed, some suggest that the virality and ephemerality of social media can only ever produce fleeting “nanostories”

Although I do agree that real progress is made outside of social media platforms, I don’t think that you can deny the importance or value of using twitter, instagram, facebook etc. to raise awareness on relevant issues. I think that as our generation does spend a lot of time “glued to our phones”, it’s important that people can use social media to reach out this younger generation and spread news/information to millions of people quickly.
American Oxygen, Rihanna.
The imagery in this video showed many aspects of America’s past and present. Covering politics, racial tension, police brutality, the military, 9/11 and NASA. It’s not the average music video, there is a gripping and raw feel to the documentary styled cinematography.
Not only did it show well-known images and videos from U.S. history, but it also showed a combination of scenes representing how we have taken steps both forward and backwards as time has gone on. I think the striking juxtaposition between images of violence and images of happiness is an attempt to highlight the idea that the “American Dream” has a different meaning for everyone, specifically marginalized communities.
People love to claim, you have to be calm as you protest, you have to speak in a way that the powerful will respect, you have to dress in a way that doesn’t alienate people. But following such rules does not matter. There’s no right way to protest your own dehumanization and your community’s destruction, especially when your country insists that there’s nothing violent, uncivilized, and un-American about how it routinely dehumanizes and destroys certain populations.

This quote in particular presents the idea that you cannot tell a group of people that there is a “right” or “wrong” way to protest, especially a group that witnesses murder, violence and dehumanization of its community on a daily basis. Telling black people to be “calm” and “peaceful” is an attempt to turn the issues they face into non-issues. By saying they shouldn’t protest violently, it is making it out to seem like these aren’t events that would or should evoke emotions as strong as anger or violence.
