I like to think that my guy Lars is a mirror of Chris, what it wouldve been like if Chris had accepted going with Wesker back in RE1. As loyal and eager to please but less empathetic and moral
Thinking how Krauser spent most of his time in re4r screaming and raging and fighting to the point of plain being reckless, all to prove the validity of the choices he's made, as opposed to Leon's stubborn refusal to give him that satisfaction. Only for his final moment to be a quiet, soft acceptance, so different from everything he's shown up to that point.
I know this is technically Leon's 'win', he proved that Krauser's way wasn't the only way to stay on top and be strong in the way that matters, but for me, in some sense, his death also feels like Krauser's win as well, albeit an unexpected one.
All this rage and viciousness and recklessness really stems from an ever-growing desperation to finally feel like he made the right choice, because once upon a time, he made the wrong one, and so many have payed the price for it, him included.
Krauser can rage and scream and hate the forces above him all he wants, but really, at the end of the day, he's also incredibly angry with himself for failing to live up to everything he has believed he should be when it mattered most. Just like he says, it's not about revenge. It's about power. He'll do anything to never feel as powerless as he felt in that jungle, unable to do a damn thing to keep those under his protection safe from forces far more formidable than he could ever hope to become.
So, he wants to get it right this time around, and he's sacrificed everything he used to stand by for that, if only to get that feeling of finally doing it right, the sureness that he won't suffer another loss like that again.
And, in a way, Leon defeating him does exactly that. He gets to die knowing that he did do something right in his life, something he didn't even really expect until the last moment. That's why he dies murmuring out 'I trained you well, Leon', and why he doesn't take his eyes off him until the very end. Yes, he's honoring Leon as his student, but he's also, in a way, feeling relieved that he managed to at least do this one thing right among all of his mistakes. He built up Leon to be a soldier who's strong and gets the job done, all while not needing to sacrifice anything the way Krauser thought he had to. In the end, the teacher really did need to be taught.
Is that a bit self-centered of Krauser? Perhaps. But there's something bittersweet in him finally getting what he so desperately wanted ever since it all went wrong for him, and Leon being the one to deliver that to him.
I finally FINALLY finished this drawing, didn't think it would take me so damn long but it did. I had to study the way rockstar artist use colors and do backgrounds while making the character stand out from the background but not make them alien to it. Pretty hard and not exactly the same style but I'm getting there.

I mean, Leons been sliding into darker greys for years, but after watching Chris doing his best Wesker impression in RE8 I was primed for irritation.
Taking up Japanese as a side project for myself has reminded me of something.
So like a long time ago I had a professor that I absolutely adored. She happened to be Japanese American. She grew up speaking Japanese at home but never really spent a lot of time in Japan. She mostly spoke with other Japanese Americans and read books.
So one day early in her teaching career there’s an exchange student from Japan who’s having a hard time understanding a concept so she explained it to him in Japanese and then he looked absolutely rattled. Like in shock. Pale.
This is how she learned that the way she speaks Japanese makes her sound like a gang member.
Japanese doesn’t exactly have cuss words in the same way as English does but imagine that the nicest professor you’ve ever had pulls your paper over and says “Okay listen here you little piece of shit I’m gonna fucking explain this to you. Violently.”
