Oh Eva Stratt they could never make me hate you. She’s placed in charge of a project so dire with odds so risky that it is named “Hail Mary”. She doesn’t want to place people into the one-way mission, but she has to because otherwise everyone dies. In essence, she has been placed into power to make all the worst decisions for others. Who lives, who dies. Guinea pigs, induced comas. No time to mourn, no time to pause. She has been placed in a series of real life trolley problems so that only one person needs to bloody their hands.
Perhaps less overtly than the Hail Mary crew, this is a sacrifice for her too. She was fully prepared to spend life in prison or be put on the death penalty for taking responsibility for this. She was fully prepared to give up her life with no glory, no statues, ultimately not going down in history as the hero she was but rather as the criminal scapegoat she knew they were going to make her into.
I think that's why a lot of people who get angry on behalf of Ryland Grace as if they were placed into that situation themselves are missing the point. Sending the data-return pods and saving Earth was never about "I told you so and here's Rocky as proof and I'm saving you all anyways because I'm better". Staying on Erid was never about "You all threw me away so I'm never coming back".
Because in the end, we must recognise that there was no better option for anyone involved. Nobody wants to send people to their deaths and commit mass ecological destruction and commit humanitarian crimes just like how nobody wants to die in the cold vacuum of space on a one-way-trip. Nobody wanted any of this. That's why I think it hurts all the more that Stratt did like Grace. It would have been an excruciating decision to place Grace aboard the Hail Mary knowing that the reason why he's likely to succeed is because he's a "fundamentally good person". The qualities that make him somebody who deserves to live are the same ones that make him the necessary sacrifice. Like sending Laika up into orbit knowing her innocent cooperativeness is what made her the best candidate.
Stratt did what she had to in order to save Earth. Grace didn't want to die. There is no villain. Eva Stratt they could never make me hate you
AU where the taumoeba doesn't evolve to escape xenonite and they both make it home but they're left feeling hollow because they now know their soulmate is 16.3 lightyears away and they will never meet again

Stupid little project hail Mary art inspired by the album In Case I Make It by Will Wood
Eva "why did you spend $300 on skittles" Stratt vs Ryland "you're spending billions on a spaceship, you can afford more candy than I will ever eat" Grace and Carl "he's got a point and also the cafeteria food could be severely improved... for morale's sake" Securityguard
Hail Mary, full of Grace. The Lord is with thee.
Drawing compressed it’s too big :( click for full detail!
Part 1 <- I like to think that although Rocky's not bound to simple sentences anymore, he falls into old habits when emotional.
Itty bitty gracerocky

i cannot even begin to describe how load bearing this video has been for my mental health lately. thank you macho man randy savage. i'll get over it but not really
like i don't think people understand. it's affirming. it genuinely is. whatever you're dealing with or whatever you went through may not ever really go away. but you can manage it. you can survive it. you can live anyway. you'll get over it but not really. you'll be back. the emotion and the burning desire that you have inside you right now wiyull☝️ continyeough
i've drawn enough of them. be free now. go. into the wild with you all
Kinda feel like there's some untapped meme/reaction image potential from old horror movie trailers...
