This isn't the sort of life Estinien pictured himself having.
Years ago, he'd thought he'd go out in a blaze of glory. With Nidhogg's head served to Ishgard on a platter, he'd fight the last of his brood to the bitter end. When they recovered and buried his battered body, they'd lay him to rest alongside his family, his soul joining them in the Lifestream.
It seemed like a perfectly acceptable plan, at the time. Fight until death, eternal peace finding him once his mission complete.
Instead, he's married to a sorceress who wrought terror on his fellow Ishgardians and sided with dragons. A perfectly reasonable thing for an Azure Dragoon to do, Estinien recalls Aymeric joking when he'd found out. For once, he didn't have a comeback.
It's not like it mattered anyway — the happiness Vianne brings is enough to melt even the harshest of winters, including the one that gripped his heart when his home was razed. A change from what he'd thought, yes; however, it's a welcome one. For the first time since he lost everything, he belongs.
But even with his original, misguided plans in tatters, he never expected to stand there disagreeing over Starlight ornament placements with his wife.
Estinien is convinced the horrific Moogle plush wearing a Starlight hat looks better on the shelf. He doesn't have to glimpse it if it's in the corner of the room, half-hidden in the dark. No, there he can ignore its very existence and continue on with his day unimpeded by sudden poms and whatever that hell-ridden music they play is.
Vianne, unfortunately, wants it on the mantelpiece in the lounge. He often spends his evenings there, chatting with her over a drink or two. It's quiet. Intimate. No place for a Starlight Moogle plushie.
Then again. There's worse. Silently, he thanks the Fury that she's not opted for the fireplace in the bedroom. "Tsk. You have a tongue as sharp as steel. I'd be a fool to." Estinien bemoans whilst trying to hide the twitch of his lips, arms crossing. The second she proposed the idea, he was fighting a losing battle. "Go on. But if I catch its beady eyes staring at me, I'll turn it around."
