Welcome to the pack by Tambako The Jaguar
My PERSONAL thoughts on 'The cursed child'
This is my personal opinion and you are invited to disagree with me because we are all humans and we are all still just as passionate about the HP universe regardless our opinions on this book or any of the characters. NOTHING MAKES YOU LASS OF WHAT YOUR FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS MAKE YOU THINK YOU ARE, PLEASE BE KIND.
I am a bit late reading it, but I never got around this idea- continuing the story I loved so much, because I truly think that the Harry Potter books were a work of art at the time I first read them and reading them again only transports me back to those magical moments of my life. I was disappointed and also fascinated by ‘The Cursed Child’ and as I am not protected from this Internet addiction thing I could not stop myself from searching the tag up on Tumblr.
I truly believe that there are a lot of great things there and so many of them have good motives and backsories, although I think there were too many things to throw at us at once. It’s a deeply flawed thing this book, but it’s brilliant in its ways.
I do not think that forcing Harry to see his parents being killed is such a bad thing. It’s actually one of the only logical things in this play. I truly think that he had to understand why his parents had to die, why he had to stay back and watch them being killed and what was the bigger picture. It hurt, but it got him at peace with his past. It also gives us the ‘I open at the close’ kind of simetry-all is ending at the beginning, the reason nothing should be changed lies here. I find this brilliant and I may be reading too much between the lines.
The reason he’s such a messy father is because he had no model- this explains too much and why he’s so angry and so coldly Dumbledore like. (and no, as any of you I do think that the ’ I sometimes wish you weren’t my son’ thing si completely out of character and wrong, but a writer is a human and as humans we may all be wrong about everything) Also, the reason Draco is such a good father and his son turns out to be the sweetest human we wouldn’t deserve in this cruel real world is because of his mother. I truly loved her character and she shows us as so many characters in that book that there’s no human that hasn’t got a bit of good in them, a bit of love (remember crazy Crouch Jr. - he’s been kind to Neville in a way, he gave wings to his dreams and also to Harry’s dreams). There are a lot of reasons why he is such a good father after all.
Also, I’ve seen this issue- destroying the power of female characters. Well let me tell you about Hermione, my one true soul mate and my favourite female character aside from the one and only MINERVA MCAWESOMEGONAGALL. Hermione is human, she’s flawed and she’s EXTREMELY STUBBORN and it is not always a good thing-look at her judging Luna-Ron is always a bit of a jerk and he may say horrible things, but he never acted like that. Hermione does not understand the idea of an house elf. Yes, her intentions are gold, but she is too stubborn to see that only some of them need her help- the ones like Dobby and maybe a general change of the wizarding world. As you can see with Kreacher, it takes something else than freedom to make him happy. Of course she could not understand that when she was 15, but also not having her relationship with Krum or Ron evolve from that age-it changes her. All I could think about in that alternate universe where she was a DADA teacher was our dear and beloved (or at least mine) Severus Snape. She is not unsuccessful, she is sad, she is missing the one true thing that she loved and Ron seems unsuccessful as well-or at least his life seems sad. Remember Dumbledore’s Army? She was the mastermind behind it, she came with the idea, but she did not want to take the role of the leader. Snape- would you see him as a leader of this kind? No, of course, but he’s succesfull. Don’t tell me that Hermione Granger who thought that there were more important things than being an auror, who wanted more than to be a ministry employee (maybe secretly she wished to be the head of the ministry, we can’t tell that), would be unsuccessful as a teacher. Don’t tell me it takes away her power. Look at McGonagall in the book, look at Dumbledore. BOTH TEACHERS, BOTH SUCCESSFUL, BOTH STRONG CHARACTERS WITH AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE MAGICAL WORLD. Don’t tell me she’s portrayed as unsuccessful without Ron. She would be minster of magic because of herself, not because of him. She’s stubborn AND FOR A REASON SHE WAS MADE A Gryffindor-her heart plays a big part in her life. She can’t be a thinker and that’s all. She is more than that, we are all more than that. Yes she’s smart, yes she’s hard working, but don’t tell me that she isn’t as strong as she could be just because she has a heart, just because she wants the man she loves. You don’t go around about Snape being written by a woman and not being a strong male character. This has nothing to do with feminism, she’s a character as strong anyway.
Another comment about Ginny not being portrayed as a strong woman and just as the lame mother who cuts the sugar is one I disagree with. She is the rational one in their relationship. He is cooking, she just has better intuition as a human when it comes to her children. I don’t see anyone complaining about THE WOMAN OF THE CENTURY, MOLLY WEASLEY, who stayed home and was a mother and fought so well in the battle of Hogwarts. Don’t tell me about Narcissa Malfory who risked everything for her son and also kinda, YOU KNOW, SAVED THE DAY. Don’t tell me that a woman is less of a strong character because she’s a mother. If a woman wants to be a mother and wants to go crazy just to protect her children, don’t tell me she’s not a strong female character wrote by a male writer. Please, don’t get this here. Nobody meant to make our characters less powerful, they just created something completely new and fun-for the writers at least.
There are lots of characters who I, as a human completely in love with the world JK has created, do not agree in this new story. I can’t imagine a grown up Harry being so angry and so mean to his child, I can’t imagine a Ron WHO HAS NOT PURSUED HIS AMBITION OF BECOMING AN AUROR AND RUNS A JOKE SHOP, I can’t imagine a world where Rose Granger-Weasley is so judgmental (remember-Hermione was stuck in her ways about her logic, but she was always the most accepting when it came to Draco//this or I have seen so much Dramione around that I can’t tell the difference). BUT this play has its brilliance: proving that NEVILLE IS SO IMPORTANT TO THE WIZARDING WORLD AS WELL AS CEDRIC WHO DID NOT DIE IN VAIN, Hagrid’s words at the end (AND I DON’T CARE WHO YOU ARE, BUT I’M SURE YOU CRIED AT THAT POINT), Minerva McGonagall-as awesome as always, Severus Snape-one of the smartest characters of this world who managed to save the day anyway and who never lost his faith in his feelings for a woman he loved so much, the love Ron and Hermione have for eachother that in the end seems so shine through every single one of this universes, the power all this things give to our true love, Scorpius, with his contagious kindness, but a sharp mind which gave him the power Snape had- TO SAVE HIMSELF AND OTHERS BRAVELY BECAUSE HE HAS THIS SLYTHERIN BEAUTIFUL GIFT OF AVOIDING DEATH AND HARMFUL SITUATIONS LIKE ANY DECENT HUMAN WITH A BIT OF RATIONAL THINKING SHOULD HAVE. Scorpius is truly his father’s son, but he becomes strong and keeps his kindness and enthusiasm untouched because he had a father who loved him anyway and such a loving mother and grandmother.
I know some books are not just books, but this play is just the version someone else has on the universe we created so many continuities to. If our visions do not match is not a good enough reason to judge the writers.
The Universe sends us exactly what we are ready for at the exact time we need it in our lives.

Dear Mr. Vernon, We accept the fact that we had to sacrifice an entire Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. What we did was wrong, but we think you’re crazy to make us write an essay telling you who we are. What do you care? You see us as you want to see us. In the simplest terms, with the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain, and an athlete, and a basket case, a princess, and a criminal. Does that answer your question? Sincerely yours, The Breakfast Club
