Darnn I forgot to blog friday!!
Whether this counts or not, I will say I was totally bummed that I had an accounting class following my contemporary lit because I was really getting into the movie. I was curious to see the producers theatrical differences compared the novel itself. Whats crazy to me is that the scenery and the tone set by the color of the flick was spitting image what I imagined while I read along. I have yet to finish it on netflix but maybe ill do that tonight!

Amen girl. Now that you recap the four novels we've read this semester like that, they all do share the terrible similarity of sadness, loss and or betrayal. In other words, a rather dark tone. Whether it be through out the whole book, or zoned in to specific character's back stories. I'm grateful for a TON of things. It would almost take forever to sum it all up with pen and paper, because I feel very blessed. These books definitely give a sense of reality checks for the readers on how much worse things could be. Personally, or economically.
Man, I wish I wouldn't of had to leave class for another on monday because I wanted to finish the movie. To me, the way everything looked is pretty much how I pictured the illustrations in my head as I read. The colors, the skinny trees making up the woods. Now the people in the bunker at the grand house was really hard for me to look at. I have a tendency to place myself in the perspective of anybody else's, and especially when watching films. I can't even begin to imagine the life of them; Malnourished, naked, cold, skin and bones. Helpless. I plan on finished the flick on netflix over the holidays. Somwhere in between the paper and finishing the book.
The creepy thing about this book, is its got my head whirling.
Even with everyone trying to place each other in post-apocoliptic shoes, and standing up for the cannibals. I would never. Nor would i off myself. My morals and beliefs are too strong to stray from them in any given circumstance.
However all this chatter about cannibalism, and given our last discussion about its side effects, i decided to look some stuff up.
Can't say i've ever done this and it felt eery just typing it in the search bar, but oddly enough i couldn't find any side effects except a disease closely related to the human mad cow sickness.
Its like we expect that kind of stuff to not be happening, but it does.

At first I didnât think that I would like âThe Roadâ because it seemed to be moving pretty slow with not much happening in the story. It seemed like I was reading the same thing over and over and the story just kept repeating itself. Now that I have read more of the story I can say that I am...
I felt similar towards the different style McCarthy chose for this book, and not only towards the fact that each chapter wasn't specifically known as an end or the beginning, but also because of her wide vocabulary use, associated with her admiration and incorporation of poetic stylistic writing. Not to say I don't comprehend what I'm reading, but when she mixes the two, I find It a tad difficult to retain. For example, "...the sacred idiom shorn of its referents and so of its reality." I'm sure looking up the words would help, but I'm used to being able to figure out the meaning of words I'm not familiar with by its surrounding context. McCarthy definitely makes certain you will, at some point(if not multiple), have to whip out your dictionary app, or the plain book itself.
I am pretty far behind on the road and plan to get caught up by tomorrow, but this blog is due today. So with that being said the only thing I feel i can ramble on is the fact that the mother commits suicide. I don't care what given circumstance stands, that is not okay.
Every child deserves both parents, whether or not their situations are difficult.
Having been mentioned in class, "maybe she was trying to take herself out of the equation to make the father and sons life a little easier; one less to worry about, one less to feed." But personally, i feel that that is more heartbreaking and unfair than the love she could have provided.

Avril Lavigneâs song, âHereâs to Never Growing Upâ, is a great example of most of the main characters in âA Visit from the Goon Squadâ. Lou used young girls to hold onto his youth. Bennie used gold flakes in his coffee to try and restore his youthful virility. The characters in this book are related to the music industry and music has always been a creative way to voice human emotion. The passage of time happens to those of us lucky enough to experience it, but time is not kind. We fight to hold onto our youth, but as long as we live, it is a losing battle. 11/8/13.
I am kind of fond of growing older. Although it is in society's first instinct to feel the opposite and reminisce on the good ole times of the past, I'm focused solely on the future! Now nothing can compare to the treasury of memories, but the future is the only thing yet to be told. What is stores is beyond our capacity of comprehension, which may just be the best part. This book does mainly focus on retrospect, and how these characters got to where they were in the older years. Which was a good tactic that I could say as a reader I enjoyed, but maybe they shouldve focused on how great their parenthood lives were opposed to how adventerous their childhoods were.
Out of all the books we've read so far I'd have to say that Visit from the Goon Squad is my favorite. Or atleast grabs most of my interest compared to the others. Needless to say i haven't disliked any novel in particular, this is just more down to earth and easy to visualize as you read through. Personally I wanted to learn more about rob I think. The guy that gets high and masks his feelings for his pretend girlfriend. This book started rough for me aswell. Rough, as in not as easy to follow along with as I anticipated. However I've grown somewhat closer to it, and by that I mean I'm not dreading picking up and getting through my reading assignment as much as I usually do since it is, in all reality, homework. Although the different narrative perspectives have thrown me off until in class we discuss more clearly how it all fits together, Im drawn to these broken, adventurous back stories of the characters at large.
A visit from the goon squad may have started out a little cloudy when jumping back and forth between narrators, but by chapter 7 It was working for me. Now chapter 8, this dolly woman maybbe sidetracking me all over again. I'm sure everything will come back together and reveal her place in the book, but those are my thoughts as of right now. I like the brokenness of the novel, if provides me interest to keep going. The sexual content isn't for me, I find it revolting so I wouldn't mind, actually be happy, if jennifer egan had left those out. On the other hand, I am looking forward to see what happens to sasha and bennie later throughout the piece.
The midterm in class was honestly a little more difficult than i expected. I had problems mostly with the PAF questions and the elements of fiction questions. I tried so so so hard to finish that crossword puzzle but i just couldnât figure out like 5 or 6 of them. I guess my memory just isnât as...
You're telling me! The elements of fictions weren't terribly difficult, nor were the matching or multiple choice, but the short answers got me, I think because I was over thinking my answers to them aswell but possibly in another way. I am hoping i did good! Been counting down the days until our results are received. Thinking back on it, It was pretty easy, but who knows. I could very well have more confidence in my grade than my actual scoring. Good thing now, is we have a better feel for the final! Where hopefully, it'll come easier if not the same. (depending on my grade)
This week I was interested in the excerpt out of our PA book. Although I wasn't aware it was due wednesday, talking about it in class helped better understand the rearrangement of fictional fairtales and how they might have tied in. Now I wasn't really up for recreating a fairytale this week for my post, not because it wouldn't have been fun! I love animations and classics, but that would require a lot of thought and too be honest, I'm not quite sure on where I'd begin. Too many fantasies, that I don't think I've seen in years! Speaking of which, talking about them is making me want to sit down and walk through memorylane.

Now we have reached mid term time and I am remembering the readings we have had. I enjoyed most of them but my favorites were definitely Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Shiloh, In Cold Blood and Stories from the Nerve Bible. I liked these because some I could relate to while others...
Just like you, I am pretty taken back by how these readings really aren't as bad as you would think. Going into a literature class you expect to read excerpts or books that are really dificult to become engaged in because of all the learning obstacles the teachers trying to run you through. However just about everything we've been asked to read has been pretty interesting. The only things i found myself not being able to retain was, See the Moon and In the Heart of the Heart of the country.
I guess that's just how postmodern they were. I like that authors decide to stray and compose their books different than tradition taught, but when I can't even understand their works, it makes me feel slighted on my knowledge.
Okay so i know i am a little behind, but i finally finished Foer's novel.
Yes we've already discussed the details in class, and everything was spoiled, but i found it quite necessary to complete the last twenty pages or so.
Regarding digging up Oskar's dad, and the renter's son's grave,
i found it kind of puzzling. They took all that time and effort, even required Gerald's assistance to relocate the dirt covering the coffin, the find out they'd have to gather things the place in it for significance. What i found was odd, is that they came back the night after.
Did they place all the dirt they moved back where they found it to move again and repeat the same tedious process, and did anyone notice the freshly maneuvered dirt?
Of course i notice this novel is fiction, just found that part a little difficult to rationalize.
Other than that, I am glad to have finished the entire book, along with my critical response to it ( :

 Communication. âExtremely Loud and Incredibly Closeâ demonstrates the problems people have communicating with each other. Sometimes the speaker of the message does not deliver the message they are trying to get across, like when Oskarâs grandfather loses his words and starts writing in books. He answers questions with something he has already written that doesnât quite make sense, but it would be close enough, like if asked, How are you?â he would show a page in his book that said, âThe regular, please.â Sometimes the problem lies with the receiver of the message, like when Oskarâs mother tells him that she and Ron are just friends. Oskar does not believe this clear sentence. Sometimes the messages we think we are clearly communicating do not reach the intended target in the way it was meant. We are this planetâs top species because we communicate, but it is amazing how often we miscommunicate.
By all means, mis communication has everything to do with the result in assumptions, misleads, and elaborations of the problem at large. Probably the world's number one reason for conflict. My guess anyways.
This book, as you've said portrays a vivid picture of just that.
In Oskar's defense, I would more than likely jump to conclusions myself regarding ron if being his age, given the circumstances.
I don't know who wouldn't, but in the long run we do nothing but hurt ourselves more by assuming the worst. Whether or not that is really how things play out, you've already took yourself through the run of experiencing those aggressive betrayal of emotions.
communication is key. if not priority.
Extremely Loud Incredibly Close overall was a good book. Like others, i feel the ending could have been better, but the way Ms.Clark breaks everything down into literary tactics, made it that much more intriguing.
To understand the meaning behind the reasons for everything became very helpful in many different ways.
I can't say i had a hard time understanding any particular part of the book, however grasping some more insight brought light to some things.
I didn't care for his mom, but to figure out she didn't just move on that fast and that Ron was mainly a friend she could grieve with and take positive steps beside, sort of turned around my opinion.
I really liked the grandpa and the grandma.
Most people didn't, but i found them the most 'down to earth' part of the book.
I'm glad the 'renter' came back after all.
40 years later is quite a while, but better have than hadn't.
I would've liked to read more about the dad, but the way the book ultimately played out around him was touching.
all in all, good book.
