This part of my life is what many call âthe dorm life.â The life of a freshman living on a school sanctioned dormitory. University Village to be exact. Upon move in day, examining otherâs dorm rooms there seems to be a noticeable change of atmosphere. Many are decorated with posters of their favorite bands, pictures of loved ones, or even Christmas lights. But for mine I had a different idea.
One of the very few items that can be seen is my stereo. Perhaps the only significant item in my life. Music. Going back a little bit, back to move in day. As my parents kissed me goodbye I ritually put Pandora on and turned the volume up. The song along with the artist that played has become a significant part of my life now. The song was by rapper J. Cole called Villematic. The song kicks off with a funky Kanye West beat but the lyrics that I expected werenât those of Kanye. The song immediately started with the words:
To the college kids no scholarships, starting your semester.
Unpacking your suitcases filling up your dresser.
Enjoy it while you got it, after that itâs God bless ya.
Life is your professor, you know that bitch is gon test ya.
I was more ecstatic than terrified at the odd coincidence. This kind of put my whole life that had just done a 180 in perspective. This life is all we have and this experience is priceless.
As seen in this photo of move in day all my belongings were able to come along with me 8 hours away in only four boxes. Even to this day when people step into my dorm room they ask, âWhere is all your stuff?â âYou donât own a T.V!?â âIt looks like a cell with a stereo and a slightly more fashionable choice of clothes.â What people donât see is my vision. Born from the idea that I was willing to leave everyone and everything I loved in order to chase my dreams. Moved to a city where I know not a soul. Before you know it youâre going to be in the Zoo struggling to work a part time job while trying to juggle to go to school full time. No more RAs checking up on you, no more meal plans for quick go-to lunches, real life hits and you wish you had this lifestyle of a dorm with a small twin-xl sized bed and simpleness back.
I believe that is exactly what my room represents. A clean mind. A new start. No worries. Free of the bullshit. A place of simple happiness and complacency.
