Leonor could only frown — not because of the question or the information but because of the request. “Do I seem like a snitch?” The question was asked thoughtfully and slowly. In order to get rid of her frown she shook her head and relaxed her face. “What happened in your house?”

“ HOW LATE DID YOU STAY LAST NIGHT ? ”   the princess stifles a yawn, reaching for a bottle of water.   “ i left before the party ended, around two, and i’m still utrudzony. tired. i could’ve used a few extra hours this morning to feel human again. ”   at least it wasn’t a polish wedding, which would have another party tonight.      @hshqstarters​

“ get does not mean take, né? ” he held the piece of veil between his fingers, inspecting it. “ do i still get points, if someone else tore it and gave it to me? no, shoved onto my hands. ”

                        “    não.    that’s cheating, miguel.    ”    she gives him a dramatic eye roll.    “    you can deduct a point for doing that.    it only counts if you do it yourself, see  ?    ”

ONE MOMENT STEN HAS A DRINK IN HIS HAND ;   the next, someone’s snatched it from his hand. for a second all he can do is blink in surprise, before his brain finally registers the scene in front of him, and he touches her back lightly.   “ hey, are you o— ”   he doesn’t even get to finish his sentence before she’s puking, and he has to force himself not to grimace.   “ shit. ”   sten tries to glance around for biel, assuming he’d want to help his cousin, but there’s not another de bragança in sight.   “ do you… i think the bathroom’s just down the hall, if you think you can make it ? ”   in the meantime, she can keep that cup.

Leonor's response was nothing but a shake of her head. She shut her eyes tightly and tried to control the sick feeling that had overtaken her whole chest. When was the last time she had drank this much? She regretted everything. Everything! "Mhm-m." She bit her lips together and took very shallow breaths as she let herself be led out of the living room. "No, actually... I think outside. Outside is good." She nodded a few times to herself. "Outside is goo-oo-ood." The moment her feet were on the grass of the front yard, she sat down, stayed upright for a moment before lying down on her back. "Are you a medical professional?"

“Oh no.” She grimaced and immediately clamped her hand in front mouth. The vodka she had just swallowed wasn’t being cooperative. She, almost hysterically, looked around the room. Where was the toilet? Was the layout the same as her house’s? Was there a trash can? Oh God– She grabbed the first big glass she saw — it happened to be in someone’s hand and almost empty! She held it under her lips and tried to keep swallowing the saliva that kept building up at the back of her throat. “Sorry, I’m–” She spat into the glass. And again. “– going to need this...” The next thing that ended up in the glass was not a transparent liquid. ( @hshqstarters​ )

“Totally works! However... are you sure you want me here? I’m going to be out a lot but I’ll be around, I might get in the way of... you know what.”

As her eyes moved from his, he looked the way she was. A wall, the moment of joy at the small win brought the smallest hint of a smile to his lips and he took a step back once more. He should walk away now. This was enough. He should not engage, no matter how much he wanted her to realise he would not play the role she had forced on him. How he would not beg for her mercy, as she so clearly thought she deserved. The sniff, the babbling, the small voice. It just solidified in his mind this was an unfair fight. 

“I’m working for the Savoias- I don’t see any reason why our path will have to cross on a regular basis.” he told her a mater of fact tone to his voice now. Impersonal. Detached. Before he had been talking to the person who ruined his life, and the woman he once wished to built it with. Now? He might has well be speaking to her wall. “Other functions I’m sure we can both” he stressed. “act like adults.”

Her head snapped to his direction. He had picked his words very deliberately. Chosen to make them hurtful. Chosen to taunt her — call her childish. It was low to begin with but even worse when he surely could recall times when she had worried about that side of herself. “You know– fuck you. Fuck you. Fuck you.” Yes, she should have tossed the handkerchief back onto the ground or into the nearby puddle. “Have a–” She didn’t want him to have a good day. “Have a day.”

He leaned his head slightly to the side as she spoke, lifting an eyebrow about half way throught but other wise remaining motionless as well as quiet. Perhaps she would reach the conclusion herself that she sounded not only ridiculous but also like a brat. i don’t want you around. Ah, there is was. She would not reach it alone would she. She could not hear herself. “Well you see, I no longer do things according to your desires or lack of them Leonor.” he replied after a second of silence. He took a step forward eyes focused on hers. 

if she just kept looking away from him, she’d win ! her shoulders tensed when she heard him take a step. her eyes moved to steal a glimpse — but she forced them to return to looking at the wall some meters away from her. this was how he spoke. calmness and intent. never stuttering, never choking on his words. how had she ever bought it ? why would he, someone so controlled and proper, want to keep her around ? genuinely want to, ambitions aside. ah... her heart was going to give out on her. she needed to escape. cry about it to barbara, beg for her help... she sniffed and let out a weak and humourless laugh. how could she be out of breath despite not moving a muscle ? “ yes, you– yes, you... you don’t need to bother anymore. ” but was it too much to ask that he gave her a bit of respect ? her own space ? “ stay away from me. ” was she in a position to make a request ? “ ...please. ” perhaps a polite request ? “ i don’t want you here. ” if she repeated it enough many times, he’d feel it ? it would sink into his flesh and burn him. how could he be fine with someone despising him so ? did he not want to make amends ? not even a little bit ? had the roles been reversed, she would have dug herself a hole and hid there for an eternity. repenting.

His jaw tighten at her words, how dare she. After the mess she’s made of his life, say something like this. Like a child who had not gotten her exact christmas list. “Ah.” he replied. His voice was still steady - the years of practice in discipline paying off. “And why is that?”

“ why is– wha– ” she was taken aback — something that was painfully apparent from her inability to articulate properly. “ because i am here. ” what started out as a hiss became a weird gasp. “ i am in japan. on the other side of the world from you. i shouldn’t need to see you. i don’t– ” she had to clear her throat. a ball had grown in it mid-sentence. she looked to her side — it was easier to talk when she wasn’t looking at him. “ i don’t want you around. ”

He’s not sure what he’s expecting as he turns, but his spine is already straightening as the voice reaches him. He’s certain he could pick it out of a screaming crowd even decades from now. But his face stays stoic as he looks at her, she had not changed much. No, even the disappointment in her eyes was the same as the last time he had looked at them. He had prepared for this, more than her clearly. Had she expected him to hide in the shadows like dog? “Thank you.” he replies grabbing the fabric from her hand. The contact was impossible to avoid, and he wished he hadn’t noticed it. The way it almost left a brand on him. It would have to be cleaned now. The fabric, of course. he made a mental note to stop by his room to drop it off and grab a new one. For now he folded it in half and put it on his back pocket.  “Hello Leonor, how have you been?”

she should have dropped it. barbara would have done it. barbara would have said something cold and prickly and hurtful and gotten back at him. she would have exacted her revenge one word at a time. but leonor was nothing alike barbara. her voice remained missing, and keeping her hand steady was just about the only thing she could manage. he should have looked more ashamed of himself. she wanted one sign that he regretted all that had come to pass. one little look. one tiny detail that would have eased the pressure on leonor’s chest. she withdrew her hand very quickly and glued it to her side. it would have been a splendid time to turn around and leave.  a splendid time not to freeze and stare at him like a complete clown. it was such a simple question ! why was it so difficult to answer ? “ fine. ” she had been fine. it was not a lie. she should have spoken with confidence. “ absolutely fine. you’re not supposed to be here. ”

“ gosh if the options are a fallen contact lens and a kink, i rather it be the latter. it would be so unhygienic, wouldn’t it ? ”

ariel jumped a little when the door to her suite swung open, although the mild shock was quickly replaced by a smile. the last time she saw her cousin was that disastrous attempt in addressing their uncle’s marriage. “lea! hi — i wasn’t really expecting anyone.” she swept her damp hair away from her face, ushering her visitor to take a seat. “i’m sorry… i don’t have drinks or anything except water. but if you want we could send out for something?”  ( @lconor​ )

“ wrong ! you were expecting me. ” because she said so ! “ oh i don’t need refreshments... or maybe i do. i need coffee because we’re about to do some serious thinking. ” she sit down on the floor by the coffee table of the seating area. “ we’re going to figure out a way to convince our parents to allow a girls’ trip to ibiza in may... and then we’re going to decide who comes with us. ”

     - ‘ WOULD YOU be interested in helping me start a new project ? ’ her voice has a lot of hope in it. ‘ i’m thinking of starting an institute to help rescue and shelter endangered animals but i would really need some help. ’ / @lconor​

“ me ? a project ? ” no one ever asked her ! the first time was always the special one, wasn’t it ? and for barbara herself to ask her ! “ aww ! pandas and koalas and... things. tigers. tigers are endangered. ” her list was lacking but that could be fixed. “ sure thing ! i would never say no to you. i’m surprised you have time to take on these little projects. do you need me for some specific role ? ”
