ana’s birth brought celebration to the entire country of poland, welcoming their future queen regnant into the world. a media darling and apple of the country’s eye from the start, anastazya was raised knowing well aware of the throne she’d one day inhabit, and from early on she was ready to tackle the responsibility. there was little she loved more than her home country, and the people she’d one day rule.
aware that she’d be the first queen regnant for poland, anastazya always strived for the utmost perfection, taught by her mother that every step she took in the future would be scrutinized three times more than a man’s would. nastka didn’t want to just be remembered for being the first to hold her title, a mere token—she wanted to go down in the history books for all the good she had done to her country, the change she could bring to poland. that meant working twice as hard in her classes, but also developing important connections with other monarchs and diplomats. luckily ana has always been a social butterfly, able to make small talk with anyone, and always keeping careful track of who to know and little pieces about each of them to remember, just in case.
for a long time nastka thought being the perfect princess meant being agreeable. likable. she smiled when she was supposed to, didn’t flinch when a duke would make a borderline inappropriate comment, and held her tongue even when she didn’t agree with her father. it didn’t make her happy, but it made other people happy—and if winning people over now meant keeping their loyalty when she really made moves, wasn’t that enough?
but it grew tiring constantly smiling and nodding, and the older anastazya became, the more she realized she didn’t hold anyone’s loyalty if they didn’t know her true feelings. it was around that time that elyse came to her with the proposition to turn prussia into a sovereign nation, and though nastka knew that it would not make some people very happy… it was a tempting offer, and a smart way to make a name for herself as crown princess and future queen. but it was her friendship with elyse that sealed the deal on it, for without her trust in her, she never would’ve made that leap.
with the prussian independence at her hands, it seems like people are finally beginning to take ana more seriously, something that she doesn’t forget every day. more eyes are on her than ever, so while they’ll see that poised smile that’s been practiced on her lips every day since she was a child, it’s more genuine than ever. she loves the feeling of being able to help others, and loves the potential of what else will come from it. nastka had silenced herself for too long, but she won’t allow it anymore.
the princess of poland is known for never having a hair out of place, a beacon of light that’s always seemed to attract others wherever she goes. she’s social but a good listener, curious but not pushy, and often empathetic to a fault. of course, everyone sees what ana wants them to see, having taken so many lessons in publicity that she can’t make a single move without thinking about how she’d be perceived. what appears effortless is because she allows it to be that way. but that perfect image she’s built is starting to crumble under the new power she’s wielding, for herself and her country. ana can feel herself on the peak of a transformation, and is choosing to look straight into the eye of the hurricane.

“ A VERY BUSY WOMAN, as expected, of course. ” never mind that george had gone back a little over a month ago around the same time euphemia had which meant the scottish queen would find herself with another headache at the mere inkling of bad press; the youngest had an affinity for such things. “ she says hello. ” or she would if she were here. the blonde gave a nod to the shortbread wrapped with a green plaid ribbon, “ those are her favourites. mine as well, i think we share the same taste. ” and then effie paused as if to await the compliment she fished for that she was in fact just like the queen of scotland.
“ I DON’T DOUBT THAT FOR A SECOND, ” she beams at her cousin, grabbing the shortbread cookies to try those first. is there a higher stamp of approval than the queen and princess of scotland ? “ where did george run off to ? is he back home ? ” anastazya pauses to take a bite of the cookie, hand over her mouth as she nods approvingly. “ wow, these are great. so thoughtful, thank you. i’m sure catherine is happy to have you back in town. ”
“ NO, JUST THERE. ” effie directed the man to place the large box that could best be likened to a giant hat box with a fanciful pattern on the table. “ i couldn’t remember which was your favourite candy and biscuit so i got one of everything only made in scotland … that i like. ” euphemia made a quick pivot to make sure the man hadn’t left. “ if you don’t like it we can have him send it away. ” she only gave a slight tilt of her blonde head to the stranger of topic.
ANASTAZYA FLASHES HER COUSIN A GRIN. “ i trust your judgment. thanks, eff. it’s good to see you again. how’s your mum ? ” waving the man away with her hand, the princess didn’t waste time opening the box to see what treats she brought over.
“Oh, hello, Nastya.” Klaus said, trying to swivel around smoothly to greet Anastazya. However, with the pain dotting many of his movements, the swivel wasn’t exactly smooth. It was fine, it was fine, he could recover. “Some days are better than others,” though none had been great, really. Maybe the first day, with all the fussing and attention he got. But it had naturally died down since then. “But I’m doing better, now.”
“ I HOPE YOU’RE RELAXING and haven’t been too hard on yourself physically, ” she frowns. “ i heard about what you did for helena. she’s like a sister to me, so thank you. there’s been no shortage of press about it, it seems, but it’s all deserved. ” she takes a few steps closer, arms wrapping around herself. “ is catherine home ? ”
“it’ll be the day after his birthday, i believe. just a crowning in front of the nobles. they’ll be doing a much grander ceremony some time next year, when the whole thing with basel is settled.” it didn’t seem right to do such a large celebration in their current predicament, they had more pressing matters to discuss. “i certainly hope they have the decency to stop an actual war from happening.” catherine frowned, she hardly wanted to jump from one war straight into another. “is anyone friendly with arnauld d’orleans?” certainly not her. “no, not particularly. why, has he done something?”
“ THAT’S COMING UP, isn’t it ? that’s exciting. if there’s anything i can do to assist you both with basel, please let me know. ” hopefully things don’t escalate further between the two countries, but money was sure to do it. “ no, i was just wondering. i’ll admit i was a little wary to get involved because of his involvement, purely because of him and his family’s reputation. ”
“ OH, KLAUS. i didn’t expect to see you here. ” not in catherine and max’s home, that is, with his nephew in his lap. her eyes move from freddie to the walker besides klaus, frowning to herself. “ how are you feeling ? ” she heard about the accident—she had been in the hospital even, to check on helena—but didn’t realize he had it that roughly. @niklausses
“i’ll get pass the part i’m saying is a date with me,” she should have thought it was too early to try and pitch all of them together, to be, at least, normal on some level. “one of these days, i’ll lock everyone in a room until all is short and we are all at peace.”
“ IF IT WAS JUST A DATE WITH YOU AND I, that’d be another story, ” she smiles playfully, patting her friend’s hand lightly. “ you don’t need to lock anyone in a room. you just have to tell your idiot of a boyfriend to be nicer to your friends, and then we’d be okay. but he has to be nice to you first—and the second he steps out of line, let me know and i’ll come after him. got it ? ” hard to believe by ronan doesn’t like her.
“ i’d hardly call thirty-three old. ” what was so wrong with getting older ? “ but alright, i can make an evening for you – a whole day is sorely out of the question, though. ”
“ I’LL TAKE AN EVENING, thank you. ” she smiles sweetly at her friend. she’d attempt to haggle for more if nastka cared more about celebrating her birthday. “ it feels old. has work been busier than usual for you ? ”
“optics with time, he didn’t want to promise anything before making sure the transition to his rule after the coronation will be as seamless as possible.” she wont tell her cousin that he was far too much of a coward to do so. “although… he called it a coup. which isn’t exactly wrong. but as soon as people know the truth, the better.” it had always been a risk for milena romanova to gamble her life and position upon something that could be so easily proven. catherine herself wouldn’t dare make the same choice, if placed in the same circumstance — there were simply too many variables. “anyway, what do you know about this duke? he’s quite reasonable from what i can tell, but i don’t know him very well. we’ve only had the one meeting.”
“ IS THERE A DATE FOR THAT YET ? ” is it coming up sooner than she expected ? time flies so quickly ; anastazya is appalled she’s already thirty-three. “ no, i suppose it’s not. i wouldn’t be surprised if the truth never comes to light, but surely the only way it’ll get buried is if russia decides to back off. ” which sounds more simple than it is, she knows, but there’s a price to such information being kept quiet. “ i don’t know him closely, but i agree, he’s been nothing but reasonable, especially in what he asks for. i think it’s clear he cares for the country beyond it being a grab for power. how friendly are you with the french king ? ”
“ it’s really not so bad ; nothing like being at home for the holidays, but enjoyable. ” everybody loves a ball and a feast, although he imagines they’ll get tiring after a certain amount of times. how long does it take to become bored of the same routine every year ? “ it might actually help you feel like it’s christmas, if we end up stuck here for the festivities. it might be a good idea to bring some snow back. ” it would blend in with the sand ! until it melts into nothing. still, the idea of snow being so close makes him smile. “ that is a long story. i’ll tell you during the boat trip, if you still want to hear it. ”
“ THAT’S TRUE. i don’t think it’d feel like christmas without some snow, even if we have to go a few hours north to get it. or maybe a nordic country would want to host a holiday party instead, ” she adds lightly, giving him a look. there’s no chance of missing snow there. his response makes her worry for a moment if she’s touched a nerve, but the promise of a boat trip makes her smile. “ careful, i’ll hold you to that, kris. ”
“you should come with us,” the invitation rushes out as the idea comes to mind, if anything it would help make things easier for her ––– her family adored anastazya as their own. “the parades are always fun, we can even bring aleks and if you come they will pay more attention to you, it will make it easier for me to warn them up with the news.” she offers, growing intrigued by the response she may receive. “we can celebrate your birthday together, it’ll be fun.”
LIPS PRESS TOGETHER FLATLY, pausing for a second of silence before speaking. “ so you’re proposing i spend my birthday... double-dating with you and him and aleks ? ” she’s not even going to say ronan’s name. “ i love you, and any other occasion i’d love to see your family, but unless your boyfriend is going to give me an apology for my birthday, i think i’ll have to pass. ”
“so i tried convincing max about belarus, it didn’t work.” she tsked impatiently, quite frustrated at herself that she hadn’t managed the one goal she had set for herself. “i thought it was obvious that france is the lesser of two evils — they can’t even hold on to bloody luxembourg while russia gained the entirety of finland.” at least in western europe france had met their match in germany, but russia could grow into much more of a monster if they remain without opposition. “what do the romanians think? or the bulgarians? the rest of the balkans will follow if you have bulgaria on the duke’s side.” ( @anastazyas )
“ IT IS OBVIOUS. what’s his argument ? ” she hadn’t been surprised to hear about the king asking for catherine’s support through scotland and switzerland as well ; what was surprising was max’s dismissal. “ i believe the french are in talks with the romanians. the balkans is a smart move, and i have a friend that could get me a meeting with bulgaria. ” though it would involve a bit of travel on her end—the convenience of international meetings with other members of the programme is really unmatched.
“You haven’t seen Maite, right?” Helena whispered gingerly. She knew that her sister wouldn’t come to the bull run because she had other affairs to handle. The comfort of knowing her sister was safe maintained her mood for a moment before she realized the worst was yet to come. From the appearance of her mangled arm and scraps, it would throw her sister into a tizzy “..I need to get discharged and release a statement before you gets here. Can you help change my my shirt.” she waved to her Ana with a sour expression. The I heart Spain shirt only punctuated her defeated attitude .
“ I’M SURE SHE’S ON HER WAY. ” words cushioned as an apology, despite anastazya personally sending her friend a text to let her know about helena. and to think, natska almost didn’t attend the event ! “ you ought to wait for her before releasing a statement, i’m sure she’ll want to be here with you. but i’m already one step ahead of you. ” the eyesore of a shirt had been the first thing she noticed when visiting her, which is why she’s able to produce a blouse from her bag. she smiles sheepishly at the color : red. “ i told my assistant to pick something up for you. the color is a little tasteless, i apologize. how are you feeling ? ”
“ it varies, depending on whether there is an event of some sort to attend. we do love our parties … ” he chuckles. despite the christmas balls and dinners that seem to be thrown about every year, he doesn’t think anything can match the feeling of being at home on christmas morning. “ have you ever been ? ” his ventures to spain have primarly been focused on the busy cities. “ twelve years, give or take. i imagine it would have been longer had i not been forced to retire early. ”
“ THAT’S WHAT I WAS AFRAID OF, ” she smiles ruefully. she wonders if there’s a waiting list of countries hoping to invite the royalty of the programme to their country for different events. christmas would probably be one of the more coveted times of year ; even nastka is thinking now about how much the christian countries would enjoy a polish christmas. “ to the mountains ? no, ” her head shakes. “ maybe i’ll plan a ski trip up there this winter. may as well see more of spain while we’re here, right ? ” if the programme doesn’t plan something for them first ; she wouldn’t put it past them. “ what made you retire, princely duties ? ”
- ‘ OH, I- ’ she could feel heat going to her cheeks. ‘ i kind of always wanted to have an exhibit at an art gallery. i thought the pictures i’m taking in the programme would make an interesting concept. ’ or a very stupid idea. that’s why she hadn’t voiced it out loud until now. ‘ but i don’t know if i’ll ever do it, it’s just a thought. why, thank you. can you repeat that and i’ll record to send to my old photography professors ? ’
“ THAT WOULD BE A REALLY INTERESTING CONCEPT. ” nastka doesn’t know how much it’d be allowed, considering the secrecy of the program, but lord knows people would come from all over the world to catch a glimpse of proof of so many royals in one space. “ i’m sure you’d have quite a few galleries hoping to land that. where did you study ? ”
