             There was a deep ache in her muscles, and her eyes felt like they were filled with sand, aware she needed to sleep, exhaustion from days worth of work and partying dragging her down, but equally aware she needed to be on set. It was just the life, right? Just the hustle. The gig that paid the Candyman and gave her the illusion of some kind of worth for at least a few minutes before the reality that her worth to the people around her crashed home and another pick-me-up was necessary to shut the self-hatred up.

Still, there was no denying she could always pull off a smile, play the game, run the scam- it was the only thing she was good at. It was her only skill. And very few people could catch her at it- it just happened that Lyla, who the smile was currently aimed at, was one of them.

                         She wasn’t sure why he was asking her that- and she had to assume it was mostly that he wanted some sort of reassurance that his own feelings for the woman he loved were valid, and possibly a bit of honest curiosity about the kind of woman who could do the work she did. And she had to wonder, just a little, if he’d ever really had a conversation with a woman who did the kind of work she did, if he’d ever sat, and chatted, if he’d ever engaged in a conversation with one that wasn’t how much? Was she reminding him that she was a person, just like he was? That maybe, there had been a whole life for her, before this?

          “ I was 16. Summer. He literally lived next door. Had, for my whole life. But that summer, everything changed. He was 18, sweet guy, shipping out at the end of summer, he’d joined the Marines. And I had this dumb idea he was going to come home, that I’d wait for him. He didn’t.
