clay had always been an honest man . he was raised that way . he didn't go around telling tall tales as his mama called them , he didn't cheat in school even when the work was real confusing , and he didn't lie . until he did . he'd wrote a lot of love songs , every word straight from his heart , real and genuine , and they'd never taken off . so he tried something different . he wrote from the perspective of his ex girlfriend , laid out how badly he'd treated her by ending things for his own selfish reasons with the pronouns switched up , and he sold it . boy , did he sell it . the fans ate it up . it didn't take long for clay brooks to become a name that a lot of people knew , going from a hundred followers on instagram to the number one on the country radio practically overnight .

he didn't feel good about what he did , but he hadn't done it for himself . not really . he'd done it for his dad . he always swore to himself he'd do what it took to live out the dreams he never got a chance to , and , yeah , he would be disappointed in how he'd gotten there , but the most important thing was that he had . his tour bus was lonely , and he had more regrets than he could count on both hands , but he had fans screaming his name at all of his shows . and one very familiar face , tonight , staring right at him from the front row .

clay had often wondered what she thought , if she'd heard it . if roles were reversed , he wasn't sure if he'd listen or avoid his music at all costs . his voice faltered when their eyes met , but he recovered quickly , and he didn't dare look her direction for the rest of the night . until she was standing right in front of him , and his customer service smile was frozen on his face . it wasn't even the words that bothered her. she expected him to say something along the lines of what he said. it was the nod that got to her. like he was meeting another fan, stranger, people of that nature. like the years she spent with him just never existed. god, she wished they could go away like that sometimes. like when she fumbled dates and hookups because she would start thinking about him and end things on the spot. or the times she spent staring at her ceiling in bed, restless and sad. or when she had to hear from her parents over and over again about how they were right about him all along.

yeah, any of those times would have been a better time to feel like they had no history. the more she thought about it the more it really started to tick her off. if he didn't have an army of security she would have slapped that fake smile clean off his face. well, she guessed she could still if she was fast enough. it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to get banned from his shows for life. but he had way more money than she did...he could easily sue her.

she shook her head, her thoughts trying to take over her reaction. "i heard it." she said pointedly, ignoring the way she could hear screaming fans behind her telling her to hurry up. "i reckon you haven't heard about how our town reacted to it." she stared him dead in his eyes. he was a big shot now. she was sure he didn't check in with anyone who wasn't biased towards him since his reputation wasn't the one that got hit from everything. she really used to have it all...now she was beginning to have nothing to lose. "i just wanted you to have to see the person you hurt. acknowledge that you're not mr. perfect now."

charlotte's therapist was going to have a field-day with her. the one she had to start seeing after the song came out. the song that changed everything not only in a good way for some but in not so great ways for others. when he left her and released that song she was heartbroken but excited to hear his voice. then she heard the lyrics, and her heart hardened enough to try and move on. her reputation might have been in tatters in her small town, but she was doing better! so much better!

except....when his tour hit right outside their tiny town, she went. of course she went. how could she not? she made sure she was front row. she wanted him to have to look into her eyes when he sang that song. she was a little bitter and yeah she was a petty woman at times. but this was for her. she wasn't going to be able to fully move on until she ended things on her terms. so she went to the stupid concert that her ex boyfriend aka the ex love of her life was performing. for his very successful career.

now the thing she really shouldn't be doing was vip. yes, she spent extra for vip. and yes, she actually enjoyed the concert even though when she heard the song fresh, she almost set the stage on fire. almost, being the key word. it was fine, everything was fine. she wanted to see him face to face and tell him to go fuck himself and then she was going to go and journal and book an emergency therapy appointment and confess her sins. she had it all planned, all mapped out. but the moment that she was actually face to face with him, her heart froze. stupid, gorgeous, ex boyfriend. for a second, neither of them said anything. then finally she squeaked out "go fuck yourself, clay,"

amara had started walking away. it was the slowest she had ever moved. she felt like the world around her was moving so fast and she was just slowly trudging to her room so that she could let everything out. she was already cracking and the longer she looked at him the more she felt herself break. it took everything in her to say what she said and move after the face. what she wanted to do was cry, scream at him, ask him how he could have felt nothing. asked him what was wrong with her. ask him to love her anyways. she had kept so much bottled up for so long that she risked losing it all. she couldn't do that. if she confessed, let it out, she would be going down a path neither of them would recover from. their careers would be in jeopardy, their place with their families....it was all too fragile.

" bringing his freshly wrapped joint to his lips , he lit it , nodding as she spoke , actually putting effort into listening this time . he was invested in this plan , both for his own selfish reasons and because he truly wanted to take some of the pressure off of her shoulders . " holding the joint out , as a peace offering if she was interested and also because he was just that polite , dawson let out a soft chuckle . if she kept rolling her eyes at him she was sure to get a headache. daniela could not afford that at the moment. so she took the joint from his hand and looked away from him while she smoked. she wasn't uptight; theater kid parties went crazy when she was in college she has seen too much if anything. still, she liked to be a little ladylike with it. passing the joint back to him she sighed heavily. "i really want to believe you....but you think brad pitt is my type...." and if that was his basis, well, they had work to do. "i'm serious....they worry about me enough....i just want them to not feel like they have to be on the lookout for me...running back to my ex or something!"

it felt like she was ripping his soul from his chest . he felt so . . . childish , for how emotional he was over the tone of her voice , her word choice . but she wasn't talking to him like he was her best friend anymore , like he was anyone special or different or meaningful . it wasn't just rejection when it came to romance , it wasn't just a reminder that she was drunk and really didn't mean the things she'd said that night . she was making it clear that he'd crossed too many lines , and he had to start acting like an employee now . without a professional relationship , there would be no them at all . he knew he messed up . he knew he'd gone too far , said too much . but he thought he mattered more to her than . . . that .

he set his jaw , looking to the left of her , his eyes focused on nothing particular . he couldn't meet hers any longer , or he wouldn't be able to swallow the sob that was trying to work itself free from his chest . for a moment, amara really didn't understand why he was still being so cruel when she was just giving him what he wanted. she was acting based on him saying it meant nothing and while it was vindictive of her to a point, she wasn't trying to rub salt in the wound. he was giving her whiplash from the bounce in intensity. now she didn't know anything. every time she thought she understood where she stood in his heart another thing would happen. she couldn't keep putting herself through that as much as she couldn't stand putting him through it time and time again. of course, this situation was new territory entirely...but it didn't matter. he said it didn't matter.

she did turn her back first, the only visible sign of her how upset she was in the form of balled fists by her side. they trembled as she used everything in her to keep her composure. he was simply giving her back what she had begun to dish out but she didn't understand what she was doing wrong. it just didn't feel fair.
