let me cook with this

i’ve been thinking a lot about noelle's character and how noelle is treated in chapter 2 specially like noelle is a damsel in distress, she's constantly being captured and having her agency taken away by queen, is the victim of misogynistic and sexist comments by spamton and berdly. characters like carol (and the player in the weird route) keep trying to push her away from susie and towards her childhood best friend who while they aren't male, is still seen as a more traditional relationship in a lot of respects

so i then started thinking like, okay, well what if a character like that was fed up with being seen as a girl, what if the pressure he felt to be a perfect daughter extended to just. pressure to be a daughter. i think a lot of transmasc people can relate to having to present as this good girl and feminine front while also being chronically online, nerdy, into horror, and bemoaning how it isn't fair that only your close friend knows how weird you are. it isn't canon obviously but noelle being transmasc is something that to me still feels like, true to noelle's character and what noelle goes through

plus i’m sure it’ll be fine for a trans guy who repressed his gender for years to find out that his religion is “true,” that his crush and his estranged childhood best friend are two of the heroes, and that the third hero, a soft and fluffy prince that he’s come to befriend and who gives him gender envy, knows all about the prophecy but isn’t outright confirming or denying anything about if there’s only one “girl” or who that might be referring to!

all of this to say i find transmasc noelle narratively compelling lmao

if you do too then i’ve been writing a fanfic about this that i’d love if more people checked out, i’ve been trying to update this frequently and feedback is always appreciated!

to me transmasc Noelle is a much sadder and more tragic story about knowing who you are but being incapable of expressing it, of being your mothers last daughter and not daring to take that away from her, of having the concept of "being a perfect girl" so drilled into your upbringing that rejecting it feels violent. and transmasc Dess is a much happier story about accepting your ostracism and refusing to appeal to those who hate you, of living life how you want and everyone who says otherwise can go fuck off!, of feeling the sun on your face and the grass under your shoes and just being yourself

in my mind transfem Ralsei and transmasc Noelle should be connected. i feel like both of them have pretty similar motivations and, along with that, pretty similar trans coding (albeit Ralsei's is a bit more direct with the dress and the princess stuff)

but like. Ralsei's whole "i want to discover myself" is pretty solidly agreed upon to be trans coding, but i dont see Noelle's "i want to change myself" recognized as trans coding very much

i doubt it will happen but i think if one of them canonically transitions the other should too

the more i think about Noelle the more the transmasc coding really stands out to me. like at first i was willing to accept it as coincidence but cmon, "I want to stop being Noelle"? the whole thing about her wanting to wear different clothes? the paralyzing fear of doing something not socially acceptable? feeling like an outsider in her own body?

cut your hair change your name and run away to the city to start a new life. get out of that small semi-conservative church town

there were a lot of things i was willing to accept as coincidence since lesbian coding and transmasc coding can look pretty similar but its so odd to me how intensely transmasc coded Noelle is now. like in the past this was just a fun headcanon but now im starting to think it was intentional because like, seriously? Noelle is a better written transmasc story than most canon transmasc stories ive seen good lord…

especially because Toby Fox has written trans characters before… ive said before that i dont think any main characters will transition in deltarunes runtime (including Ralsei) but based on there being two different "princess Ralsei" references in chapter 5, my perspective is starting to shift… which means Noelle might have the chance to canonically transition too…
