ALEXANDER DEAN.
“it is coarse,” alex replied, heavy on his final word. he’d never heard such a thing described that way, but now that he had, he certainly understood. “talk is supposed to turn into something. that’s why you talk, right?” he replied, eyebrow raised thoughtfully in return, challenging. “why waste time talking if it won’t lead to anything?” ever the utilitarian, of course, being the son of ares. “by dating apps? no. how do you know i haven’t kept myself entertained?” he smirked, shaking his head. “i’m not bored. got a bit of a longer attention span.”
“ --- well. i mean. i talk cause i can’t shut up. wasting time talking is what i’m BEST at, ” leah quipped with a self-deprecating shrug. she shook her head with a half-laugh and a raise of her eyebrows. “ --- longer attention span ? what does that even MEAN ? is that supposed to be like, an innuendo ? see, this is why i need tinder. ”
HUGO TORRES.
“first of all, she’s definitely too young for that. secondly, how do you suppose tinder’s gonna work out? sneak out of camp to go on dates? that’s not risky.”
“ --- you can go on dates in camp ! in like ... the WOODS. or a picnic on the beach. see ? i can be ROMANTIC. ”
ARTHUR SHAW.
~~ “Let’s be real, they probably invented Tinder!” He said, “And honestly, don’t most people our age have it? I mean, I personally don’t because I don’t want to be killed by monsters, but… like… normal folks do right?”
“ --- wait, oh my gods, do you think MONSTERS have tinder ? ”
SKYE GARCIA.
“… Last night I spent my night eating strawberry pie and watching 90’s cartoons in a bathrobe. I’m really old. Do you do that as well?”
“ --- 70s reruns of hawaii five o, and saltine crackers with nutella, but same general aesthetic. ”
NYLE HALVORSEN.
a teasing grin played across his pink lips, her words making him laugh. “ a camp full of young, attractive demigods? i hope i’m included in that statement, “ he teased her even more, tongue swiping over his bottom lip before he shrugged. “ and yes. that’s exactly what you’re supposed to do - what’re they gonna say? no? to a daughter of poseidon? p l e a s e. “
“ --- um, well, i mean, i think EVERYONE’S attractive, so my opinion really isn’t, like, worth anything on that subject. not to say that you, uh, aren’t attractive ! ” she added hastily, flushing. “ --- cause you are ! AND young ! ... um. ” leah bit her lip, conscious of how ridiculous she was being. her brow creased as she fought to stifle the flow of words, most of them attempts at apologies and explanations for the last several seconds of her rambling. she chose to focus on his last question instead, studiously ignoring the blush that had crept up the back of her neck. “ --- oh, you never know. they could be afraid of the WATER. ”
SKYE GARCIA.
“Don’t stress it too much, you can use Tinder. And if anyone is old, it’s me. Last night I got excited over pie.”
“ --- i get excited over pie ! oh my gods, are we old ladies now ? ”
NYLE HALVORSEN.
“ maybe she has a point, don’t you think ? “ he teases, walking up to her. “ i mean, if you’re eighteen and you’re using tinder, that’s kind of sad — especially when you go to a camp full of demigods. “
leah’s mouth dropped open in mock indignation. “ --- hey ! listen, i am using tinder because i am going to a camp full of young, attractive demigods. i mean, what am i SUPPOSED to do, go up to someone and be like ‘hey, wanna date’ ? come on, be serious. besides, i’m not using tinder. yet. just thinking about it. and there is NOTHING wrong with thinking. ”
HALI ANDERSON.
hali listened, smiling, to her younger sister’s long ramble. she called them her streams of consciousness, since that’s truly what it was like: a running body of water, tumbling over rocks, with a lot coming and essentially unstoppable. “yeah, i’ll try some. how many’ve you had?” she asked, raising an eyebrow. she wants to credit the slight excess of energy to the sugar or something of the sort, but she knows that’s probably not the case. it’s just leah. “hey, they’re not all so bad,” she said, thinking of one close friend in particular– but that only affirms what leah’s saying. “well.. you’re right. i won’t, but i’m sure they’ll find out anyways. where’ve you been?”
“ --- like, four ? maybe ? not nearly ENOUGH, either way, ” leah said dismissively, passing her sister the bag. she could tell what her sister was thinking, but knew her excessive energy today was probably more due to the return of the rest of the campers; there was a excitement running through the warm june air that leah couldn’t help but be a channel for. “ --- did you know that sugar highs don’t actually EXIST ? there have been, like, scientific studies showing that there’s no link between glucose and hyperactivity. it’s a placebo. so, like, parents say sugar will make their kid hyper, and then the kid believes them and gets hyper BECAUSE of that, ” she informed hali. “ --- oh, i’ve been around. went down to the beach for a bit before coming here. tried to calm myself down. didn’t really work. obviously. ”
So, Gregory, we are on a date. Yes, we are.
ARTHUR SHAW.
~~“Damn… that’s cut throat.” He mused ;; rubbing the nonexistent hairs on his chin. “If it’s not, it should be… But hey, maybe they’ll let some of their older siblings know you’re lookin’. Your own, personal, nosey little matchmaker?”
“ --- oh, no, i don’t think she liked me very much. or like, at all. i hope she doesn’t talk about me to her older siblings, they’d think i was a TOTAL loser ! i mean, not that they’d be wrong, ha, but like, i don’t need them to know that. ”
ALEXANDER DEAN.
alex let out a huff of amused laughter. “i’m sure a couple of my brothers would have a go at you, if they found you on there. what’s the point?” he asked again. “you’d just be finding the people that are here. an’ you could talk to ‘em easily enough here,” he added, gesturing around them. he held his tongue on making a comment about he, too, had been in attendance all year but had yet to cave to the app. “i guess i can’t, brenner. then go for it, since your current options aren’t cutting it.”
leah made a noise of dissatisfaction at the words ‘go at you’. “ --- oh, you make it sound so COARSE. besides, talk is talk, but it never, like, turns into anything. i just thought it might be a bit of fun, is all. ” she blew a bit of loose hair out of her face in embarrassment, arching an eyebrow at him. “ --- i’m surprised you haven’t been tempted yet. you’ve been here all year too, you aren’t getting, i don’t know, BORED ? ”
ALEXANDER DEAN.
alex’s lips press together thoughtfully as he tries to remember the guidelines. “uhh– yeah. i think so,” he agrees, brows knit. “you’re like. the prime… demographic.” he spent a second too long trying to come up with the word for his liking, but doesn’t let that on. “target. that’s what i meant.” he corrects himself again. alex’s tone of voice is almost amused when he asks: “why, were you thinking of using it?”
“ --- well, i mean, like, yeah, maybe, ” she defended herself. “ --- i mean, it’s SUMMER ! i’ve been here ALL year with like, the same five people, and there’s a bunch of new people ... come on, you can’t blame me. ”
ALEKSANDER CLEO.
she spoke & spoke & spoke, no doubt stealing enough oxygen to kill the fire that continued to falter before them. ❛ you haven’t taken a breath in three minutes. ❜
❛ & i might answer your question if you offer me the opportunity, ❜ he deadpanned. ❛ thirteen. ❜
“ --- oh. yeah, ” leah said sheepishly, her hand flying up to rub the back of her neck uncomfortably. “ --- well, daughter of poseidon, my SPECIALTY. you know, cause i can hold my breath ? underwater ? ” she realized she was still rambling and cut herself off, her chest tightening the way it always did when she realized she was being a nuisance. her eyebrows flew up when he mentioned what cabin he was in. “ --- oh, HADES ! cool, that’s -- that’s cool. hey, big three ! ”
“ --- oh my gods, one of the new aphrodite kids just said i’m too OLD to use tinder ? she’s, like, twelve ? i’m eighteen, not eighty ! isn’t it illegal for her to even be using tinder ? ”
ALEKSANDER CLEO.
❛ look at you.
child of poseidon, i’m sure. ❜
“ --- whoa. yeah. what ? how’d you know that ? i mean, like, i didn’t do anything with water at ALL. wait, was that supposed to be, like, a bad thing ? is it cause i’m talking too much ? cause my sister, she’s not like this at ALL. i just can’t shut up. usually i’m better than this, it’s just -- so much people. it’s very exciting. LOTS to talk about. ha. sorry. anyway, how about you ? what cabin are you in ? ”
ALEKSANDER CLEO.
he missed the streets of his town; a small corner of the world that he’d carved out for himself, dragging the dagger along its edges if only to make a point.
he knew it from the scent of his blood, the blood that was used to help build businesses & tear down enemies.
the gypsy was right: he was much too serious for someone who appeared so young.
but he was no longer home. instead, he stood tall in front of a bonfire, his clear blue eyes watching the flames dance. he’d always wanted to go to camp.
“ --- are you new ? wow, i hope you are, cause that would sound super rude if you’re not. i’m just really bad with faces. you’d think i’d be better at it, cause i’ve practically lived here for, like, EIGHT years. well, i mean, if you are new, welcome, i guess. i’m leah, by the way. and if you aren’t new, sorry about that. like i said, bad with faces. please don’t hate me. ”
