A Conversation Demanding Introspection
I laughed, trying to hide my insecurities. I brushed my hair back from my face and asked rhetorically why I was so unemotional, why I felt this cold. I had always suspected you understood me, felt like we had a special bond. Despite this, reflecting on this conversation always surprises me – the point that revealed as much about you as it did about me.
Looking me straight in the eyes, unwavering, but quietly, you said, “No, you’re not. You’re a very emotional person, you just don’t let yourself show it sometimes.” The observation sidelined me from my own conversation. It forced me towards introspection, towards ensuring I could provide those points of candour to my own friends: to truly understand the people around me. Your honesty shocked me to action. I must strive to be better by granting those around me the insight into their own beings. I must hand them the mirror to see all the light they cast on those around them.
