Final AVT 180 project

According to Merriam-Webster, intertextuality is defined as “the complex interrelationship between a text and other texts taken as basic to the creation or interpretation of the text” which is in short, the way one media refers to another. This can be confused with taking inspiration from another piece of work, but with intertextuality the work is directly a version of another work but altered with the artists art style.

Kehinde Wiley’s work is a fine example of intertextuality with his work as he recreates pieces of work with his paintings. Wiley’s painting, “Napoleon Leading the Army Over the Alps” is a reference to Jacques-Louis David’s “Napoleon Crossing the Alps.” Wiley’s “The Capture of Juliers” is a reference to Peter Paul Rubens “The Capture of Juliers.” Wiley’s “The Chancellor Seguier on Horseback” is a reference to “Chancellor Pierre Seguier” by Charles Le Brun.

The main thing that is very in your face is the replacement of white men of power with black men in Wiley’s paintings. The interesting thing abut this work is how he chooses to almost rewrite the meaning of the original paintings with the use of people of color instead of white people. The original paintings, considering the time period they were made, would never star African American men in such a powerful way. Wiley depicting black men in such powerful statuses is a nice modern touch that I really appreciated, as a woman of color. Black men are so often degraded in paintings from the original time period that the paintings were inspired by. The twist that Wiley creates with his artwork is inspiring.

Daniela Edburg’s work is like nothing I have ever seen. It is clear that these women are in distress, yet the objects used are not things that would typically cause distress. Everyday things, like food or kitchen materials are meticulously placed to appear dangerous. It is interesting that every person in the art is a woman. I could have to do with Edburg herself being a woman. Woman do often times play the damsel in distress arch in artwork. Edburg seems to play with this commonality with the women placed in deadly scenes. The items make the whole thing seem less than it is, which could also be the message she is trying to portray. She seems to be portraying the notion of consumerism in an extreme way. These everyday objects, when you have too much of it, could lead to death. Her exaggerated portrayals of death are almost humorous in a way.

Self Portrait

The act of erasure/subtraction is an art form I am not very familiar with. I was stumped when I first laid eyes of the art of Apóstol and Cohen. The confusion that I faced intrigued me to want to learn more. My initial interpretation of Cohen’s project “Buff” was that he was taking the lewdness of pornography away from it without necessarily taking it away. He was censoring it in a way, though the viewer is still able to conclude what is behind the whited-out figures. It makes the viewer focus on other aspects of the art. If they were to simply be pornographic images, that is all the viewers would take in. The x-rated imagery would distract the reader form the beauty of the artwork. By using the technique of erasure, the viewer focuses on the placement of the figures, the movement of the figures, the environment around them, their shape, and many other aspects that would be dulled by the raunchy images.

I believe a similar thing is visible in Apóstol’s project with the polished residents. The buildings are bare and inhabitable. There are no signs of life, yet it is known that they were once lived in. It is a interesting site, one that is rarely seen, especially not on purpose.

When I see these pieces of erasure/subtraction, I see it as a way for the artist to let the viewer know that it is okay for them to interpret and view the art as they please. We are allowed to make our own story and imagine what might possibly fill the void left by the artist.

Marcel Dzama’s work intrigued me because it included many different forms of art to create one big art piece. He uses sculpture, painting, film, large-scale polyptychs, and dioramas to create his stories. His techniques are unique, and he draws influence from many different artists including Oskar Shlemmer, Dada and Marcel Duchamp. He also utilizes Mexican culture is many of his sculptures.

He uses many media when creating his artworks. His costumes are made with papier-mâché, plaster, and fiberglass and elaborate masks. He uses drawings, collage elements, cardboard, and ceramics to create his different scenes starring humans, animals, and hybrids. His work tends to center around the concept of chess. He tells a story by creating chess pieces.

Marina, a water creature from a far planet named Planet Howick, is certainly a woman with many unique qualities. She has no eyes, only pits that exude a bright, laser like beam from them that is strong enough to pierce through even the thickest of armor. To protect those around her, she utilizes her thick afro as a way to hide the beams, she does not need to see to swim, as she is able to use echolocation to navigate through the seas. She is known for her beautiful voice and her echolocation is strong enough to put any listener into a trance. She is feared by many and not a woman to take lightly.

Her love for water and planets covered in water is what brought her to Earth. She was determined to make Earth her fifth conquered planet. Upon landing, she spent three years blending in amongst the humans inhabiting the planets. Within those years, she befriended many African and African American individuals and fell in love with the culture. She believed they were her own people, or descendants of them, as she was informed that they shared her complexion, a rarity in outer space.

On the fourth year, she rose up and declared war on Earth. Not much could be done, as she tied her hair back during battle and annihilated any enemies that stood before her. Soldier, tanks, airplanes, nothing stood a chance against her laser eyes. Not long after, Earth surrendered. She built her castle in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and peacefully ruled over Earth. Under her rule, she was able to bring peace and harmony to the Earth people, something they had not seen in centuries. Marina went on to become one of the best rulers Earth had ever seen.

This was my original interpretation of the assignment with a description. I originally did my concept with photoshop. I uploaded the correct assignment but thought I would still post my first attempt.

Queen Carmine travels through space and conquers the Carmine planet. She had been named Carmine at birth because her parents, the late King and Queen, had hoped she would one day conquer the planet that they have been in search of for many years. She has been preparing for this since she was young. After she was crowned queen, she set off to conquer the unpopulated and unclaimed planet. After traveling through space for 5 years, she is finally able to settle on her new home and reign over her people as the new queen of Planet Carmine. This image is her looking over her new home and finally able to let out a sign of relief. Her life mission is complete.

I was inspired by African royalty. The red color of the background and the red color of her dress is what inspired me to name her and the planet after the color carmine.

In the back you can see her huge spaceship where her army and her people are preparing to exit and start their new lives on their newfound home. Queen Carmine is a force to be reckoned with. She will continue to explore her new home and protect it with her life.

Christian Northeast work is forever changing. Over the span of his career, his work has evolved into what it is today. In the beginning, his pieces were based on mistakes. He would create something, mess up, attempt to fix it, and mess up again. Though he hated his own work, as we are always our biggest critiques, he soon gained an audience as people loved his unique art style. His earlier work was all handcrafted and he later on moved to digital art. Digital art allows for a more flexible path when it comes to creating artwork. He makes sure to create depth in his digital artwork with shadows and highlights. His expert use of color placement gift the digital pieces texture.

When I look at these mixed images, I understand that the idea is to achieve contrast between the three-dimensional and two-dimensional images. He is able to combine the 2D artwork with the 3D artwork to create an entire observable scene that still portrays a story. I noticed that the 3D art has a thick white outline around it which distinguishes it is from the 2D work which has a black outline around it. I like how blended the two different art styles are and how they are still able to create a story.

I noticed that they use painting style that resembles the neoclassical era style of painting for the 3D art, while his 2D art seems to mainly consist of artwork from roughly the 1920s. It is an interesting union of two very different and unique art styles.

This image reminds of school or an educational environment for some odd reason. It seems like either the person is absorbing what is in the vials, or he is adding to the vials with what is in his head. I am not sure if that is the intended message, bit that was how I interpreted it. The head could also be being powered and fueled by the unknown substances in the vials, alluding to the human mind’s need to always constantly be nourished by new outside information in order to properly function in society.

Rohlmann used a significant amount of balance in this piece. Though the artwork is not directly symmetrical, it is definitely balanced on both sides. It makes the piece more appealing to the eye. Balance is a principle that Rohlmann uses quite often in his artwork I have noticed. By making the tubes connecting the head to the vials wavy, it establishes movement. Though it is not exactly clear which way the movement is going, it is sure that they are moving. Lastly, he emphasizes the head by adding the white behind it. Without it, the head’s importance to the piece may have been lost with all the repetition of colors.
