Second day of the weekend I watched Stranger by the Shore. I was totally fooled by its art style, must've subconsciously connected it with Luca haha (not that I've seen Luca)

It's another more realistic gay romance that has a good balance of the fluff and the sad. The art style draws the main characters looking like they are 14 and there wasn't much exposition so I had a slight difficulty getting invested at first. But overall I like it's more realistic aspect, struggling with homophobia but not having it overshadow the more hopeful part of the story. There wasn't a lot, but there was communication. Oba-san is the MVP here taking queer youths under her wing. I really like Mio's ponytail wish he kept it. It also ended on a more satisfying note than Doukyuusei pacing-wise, both being just one hour long.

The one explicit scene did caught me off guard, as like always, I did not do any research. But there was sufficient build-up along the way and it serves a narrative point, so I was okay with it. i kinda accepted the allo aspect and the fast pace at the point when Mio turned up again with no explanation why he fell in love with Shun (other than the camera language establishing they've kept in touch for the past three years). This pair I'm more interested to follow what's next. It's really cathartic to watch people walk out of their trauma. already listened to the first chapter of the sequel (aka the prequel), i'm looking forward to the family drama in hokkaiddo hehe

p.s. I went through vomic for the first arc of Sotsugyousei and UGHHH (toothache). still don't like the teacher. but the lovebirds' slices of life is pretty cute to watch. (Sajou's is a lot gloomier than Eiji lol) starting to give me the same feeling as hori miya, like those high school sweetheart stories you hear and they eventually get married and lived happily ever after. bit of a way til i get to blanc but i think i can finish what i started.

Yut Lung is probably taken too young to have a Hong Kong/Cantonese accent in his English (and definitely not a modern way by any chance). It'll sound strange, but I don't really see him speaking Cantonese at home?? As in I hc the official language in the Lee household is probably Shanghainese. His old money dad definitely moved to Hong Kong because WWII, so it'd fit with our film trope that he was originally from Shanghai, which could also explain the American connection. His mother is more likely to speak Cantonese, accent pending. The servants might too, with accents from various parts of Canton/South China. Yut Lung did mention his father was good to him so he must've picked up Shanghainese from dad. And then he'd mostly be using Mandarin for business and among his brothers.

I want to say he'd speak Cantonese "in private" but what "private" does he have after his mother died? He'd hold onto the language, but it became harder and harder to articulate or he'll reveal what he really wants.

A funny thing came up in my research, mandatory education was implemented in 1971, a year after Yut Lung's birth in manga timeline. That means I can't keep him in the traditional mansion with private tutors... Tiny Yut Lung in bowtie and shorts prepring for his first day of primary school... if his mother isn't killed :D damn i get sad thinking of his mom sewing/knitting things for her boy...
