authors note: I wrote this because I had a lil gap in my revision time so I didn't wanna commit to my main fic just yet, but here is a lil modern au summer treat because I'm dying of the heat here! Thank you to @girl-named-matty @savingsallow @accio-bagel @theladyofshalott1989 @ravenwind-75 @cactus-casts @espressoristretto-patronum for letting me borrow ur MCs! I do hope everyone is in character 😅. I did try not to include any relationship dynamics, I wanted to explore their found family. Please enjoy :)
"It's bloody boiling!" James exclaimed, picking at his sky blue polo tee, draping himself over Val, laying his head on her jeans; she shoved at his shoulder half-heartedly before tangling a hand in his hair and haphazardly tucking strands of grass into his curls, weaving them together.
"You say this every year." Ellie pointed out, nibbling away at the last bit of her ice lolly, hiding her hands, which were somehow still cold, in her flannel shirt, and tucking her short brown hair behind her ear, with a little difficulty due to her new giant hoop earrings, a gift from Alyn. She'd cut off a good chunk off of said hair, as per usual in the summer, which, logically made sense, but James despised the idea of parting from his locks at any moment in time, regardless of how hot he was.
"Because it's hot every year."
"You've got ice cream on the corner of your mouth, Jamie." Jo laughed, handing him a tissue from where she was busy sharing an ice cream sundae with Alyn as Anna threaded daisies carefully through the twin braids she'd meticulously weaved into the two girls' hair. The pair of them, along with Matty, looked majestic, in their matching floral dresses and pretty seashell sunhats, and matching braids now too!
The girls, and Damien too, who had taken to tucking his hair into a tidy braid for the summer. He was also wearing floral, in the form of a classic Hawaiian shirt however, and James debated stealing it off him at some point. He pretended to ignore how Sebastian was clearly drooling over the way the shirt clung to Damien's arms. Anna had failed to hide her amusement the minute she saw the three of them, somehow still wearing black in this heat. Crazy girl.
"Do you think the ice cream van chap is sick of us yet or can I go and buy thirds?" Sovann mused, adjusting the hem of his tank shirt as he sat forward, taking his head off Ominis's shoulder and resting his elbow on Ale's knee, who snorted and immediately pulled out his wallet.
"Get me one too, Sov, another choccy." He handed Sovann another fiver, then paused and handed him another. "Actually, just get two. Maj will have the other."
Maj snorted, raising a hand. "Maj will not. I am on a diet and my body is a temple." He flexed an arm, and Ale rolled his eyes, uttering one word.
"Chocolate."
Maj hesitated, then pulled out his wallet. "Diet starts tomorrow. Don't take Ale's second fiver, I'm a big boy, I can pay for my own ice cream."
"You can pay for mine too." Adelia gave him a look, tucking a blond curl behind her ear, and Maj sighed, handing over another note.
Ale raised an eyebrow, taking the note. "Yeah, I don't actually have twelve hands-"
"Could've fooled me." Sam wrinkled up his nose, his glasses raising slightly. "God, I hate it when it's hot and my nose gets all sweaty. My glasses keep slipping. Don't worry, Ale, Ill come with you. Does anyone else want seconds whilst we're at it?"
"Amen brother." Tori sighed as if her glasses were the greatest tragedy known to man. "I always keep contacts on hand for the summer. And yes, Id like another mint chocolate please."
"Oh, the glasses thing is so true." Theo nodded solemnly, finally piping up from where he was still finishing his first ice cream. "And I refuse to wear contact lenses too. No seconds for me yet, I'm afraid."
Cal laughed, hiding his mouth behind his hand. "How have you still not finished that one?"
Theo huffed. "I have sensitive teeth."
Sebastian snorted, and Tori rolled her eyes at him. "We're forgetting who immediately ran to rinse his mouth out after taking a sip of his coffee when it was too hot to drink."
James giggled, and Sebastian went pink, huffed, and crossed his arms.
Once Val had successfully brushed James's hair out of his eyes, she turned her attention back to Cal, who was laying in the grass, tracing shapes in the sky with his fingers, following the clouds. Val's gaze became soft and fond, and James made a mental note to tease her about it later.
Also laying next to Cal was Rence, who's gaze was fixed on the Kindle he held about half a meter from his face, concentrating with that signature pinched nose stare. He didn't like people, he'd made that much clear, and when he hung out with friends he had to take five minutes every now and again to do some light reading, as he claimed.
Alyn snuck up on him and carefully smoothed a layer of sunscreen over his nose, and he completely ignored her. James was in awe. Rence usually threw a fit if anyone tried to touch him, he'd have to ask Alyn for her tricks later. She made her way over to him, sighing with her hands on her hips as she spotted how pink he'd become. James' eyes widened as she revealed her murder weapon.
"No!" He yelled, immediately jumping up in the grass and running barefoot towards the car park, with a very tired Alyn following behind him with her spray bottle of suncream. She caught him with a huge grin, gently slapping her cream-covered hands on his cheeks.
"You'll burn, you silly boy." She scoffed as they returned to their group, James with a sullen look on his other wise cheerful face.
"Finn will also burn, his cap is on backward." James huffed.
Finn looked scandalised. "It's my brand! Besides, I do not burn. I tan a beautiful sexy golden colour."
He was biting directly into his third ice lolly, somehow completely disregarding it's icy temperature on his teeth. And he was right, he did look pretty normal in his backwards cap and basketball jersey combination, in fact, James would probably think there was something quite wrong if he didn't have his hat on backwards.
"Imagine burning." Anna joked, sipping on her slushie. Her tongue was beginning to turn purple.
"Okay, sorry that I'm pale as." James snorted. "Pretty much everyone else here burns too!"
"But everyone else wears suncream, Jameson." Matty tutted with a grin from where she was applying suncream vigorously to the exposed areas of Killian's arms (and maybe using it as an excuse to touch her boyfriends arms for a bit). "Get that stuff on your face."
"Yes ma'am." James complied, letting Alyn rub the sticky awfulness into his skin. She hadn't had to apply much herself, being mainly covered by a thin, pale blue maxi dress. Wearing shorts and a short sleeved shirt had it's cons, clearly, the cons being that unfortunately James now had to lather the exposed skin of his silky smooth legs and arms with suncream.
"How do you get them that smooth, Jamie?" Val looked impressed. "I always end up with stray hairs when I shave."
James winked at her. "A magician never reveals his secrets, my dear."
"He uses beard razors on his legs." Rence piped up from where he was still laying back, having opened his sunbrolley and propped it up in the grass so that he was covered fully.
James huffed, sticking his tongue out at his boyfriend. "Stop revealing my secrets!"
Rence shrugged. James had no idea how the blond was wearing a bloody turtleneck in this heat, despite how thin he claimed it was. It was sleeveless, though.
"I wax them." Castiel bragged, and Ellie hid a snort behind her hand.
"What? Whats so funny?" He frowned.
Ellie burst out laughing. "Nothing. Just the thought of you sitting there with your high pitched scream every time you rip the wax off."
Castiel sighed, but he was grinning. "Har har. Lets all laugh at the man who appreciates self care."
"My self care is chocolate and sleep." Maj sighed in bliss as he finished off his ice cream, and both Ale and Tori solemnly nodded with an, "Amen."
Anna popped open a water bottle to wash her hands, only to scream as Cal squeezed the bottom of the bottle, causing water to shoot up and hit her in the face.
"You little shit!" She yelled, uncapping another bottle and chasing him around the grass. Ale cackled maniacally until Anna aimed, missed, and soaked Ale's shoulder instead.
"Oh, it's on!" He stood up, equipping his own water bottle and carefully puncturing the lid with a skewer five times before squeezing it in Anna's direction. He too miscalculated, and Tori got a facefull of water directly in her face. She gasped, droplets spraying directly onto her tank top, then furrowed her brows seriously, taking off her glasses and shoving them in Poppy's hands.
"Uh oh." Ale gulped, then ran for cover. Adelia his behind Jo and Matty, discreetly poking holes in the top of a bottle with her safety pin and handing the bottle to Maj, who ran off cackling, squeezing the bottle and splattering water all over Castiel's back.
"Oh, you're DEAD, Potter." Cas grinned, immediately opening his own bottle.
By the time the water fight had ended, pretty much everyone was soaked head to toe, besides Ren, Adelia, Matty, Ominis and Silas, who had taken careful measures to ensure protection from the onslaught of aquatic ammunition (Ren with his sunbrolly shielding him, Adelia shielding herself behind various other people). Drying themselves out in the sun, the gang formed a haphazard circle, heads close together.
"Get your wet hands out of my hair, Vidal!" Ominis grunted, batting wildly at Sovann's arms; Sovann laughed.
"Summer is great when you can just get absolutely soaked." Maj mused, to a chorus of "seconded!" from Ale, "thirded" from Val and "Seventhed!" from James.
"Summer is great when you spend it with great people." Matty corrected, to a chorus of "hell yeah"s and " oh absolutely"s. "Now please stop wringing your hair out on my knee, Ale."
Actually, I haven't even finished my internship yet but I wanted to draw something silly in between working on my projects to cure my boredom. I’ve been doing this for a bunch of my friends in the Hogwarts Legacy fandom but haha
