One year ago today, I attended the GLAAD Awards in San Francisco, where I had the honor of witnessing Miss Dianna Agron host her first awards ceremony. I remember getting all dressed up, making sure every detail was perfect. I remember how excited and nervous I was all the way there. I remember waiting in anticipation to catch my first glimpse of The Lady of the night. I remember seeing her for the first time, and I have never seen someone quite so beautiful. I remember the sheer overwhelming feelings of her walking three feet away from me. I remember sitting in the audience and thinking how proud I was of her standing up on that stage and all of the words that she said. Being able to see Dianna in person and to hear her speak was probably one of the most amazing things that has ever happened to me. She has made such a difference in my life and has been a part of what shaped me into the person I am today. Dianna speaks of love quite often, in all forms. Spreading love. Giving love. Being love. Letting love in. Some of her words of love are permanently written on my skin. These words remind me every day to live a life of love. Not only does the most recent addition to my collection say just that, it's also the most personal to me. Because one year ago today, I got to hear these words spoken by her for myself.

I strongly disagree with anyone who says Maleficent isn’t the best Disney villain. No singing, no dancing, no long expositions about her plans, no tolerance for bumbling comedy sidekicks (she electrocutes a whole room full of minions when she finds out they’ve fucked up and spent the last few years searching for a baby), just outright malicious intent.

I mean let’s take a look at her motivations compared to other popular Disney villains: SCAR - Wanted to become King. 

URSULA - Wanted to rule the seas.

WICKED QUEEN - Wanted to rule as the most beautiful woman in the land.

JAFAR - Wanted to rule in the Sultan’s place and/or obtain ultimate power.

Maleficient, by contrast, didn’t want any of that. She didn’t want more power. She didn’t want fame. She didn’t want to rule. She just wanted to raise hell. This is the woman who decided that every newborn child in the kingdom should die and that the land should be covered in darkness for one reason - SHE WASN’T INVITED TO A MOTHERFUCKING PARTY.

That’s right, the evil bitch basically condemned an entire kingdom to die at her hands because she didn’t get invited to a christening.

This is not a woman with a motivation. She cannot be reasoned with. Her actions cannot be rationalized. She is evil for the fun of being evil, not because she wants something.

THAT, my friends, is the ultimate villain. One who knows they’re evil and LOVES it.

I think it’s great for two people to be together. That is a good number. I think, that to keep it alive though, you can’t spend every day together. It wears out the magic, Love means nothing to me if it’s not fortified with fierce, painful longing, brief explosive instances of furious passion and intimacy and then a sad parting for a time. In that way, you can give your life to it and still have a life of your own. I think some couples spend too much time together. They flatten out the potential for experience by constant closeness. Passion builds over time like steam. Let it rage until it’s exhausted and then leave it alone to let it build up again. Why can’t love be insane and distorted? How can it be vital if it has the same threshold as normal day-to-day experience? Why can’t you write burning letters and let your nocturnal self smolder with desire for one who is not there? Why not let the days before you see her be excruciating and ferment in your mind so on the day you go to the airport to pick her up, you’re nearly sick with anticipation? And then when desire shows the first sign of contentment, throw it back it its cage and let it slowly build itself back into a state of starved fury. Then when you are together, it all matters. So that when you look into her eyes, you lose your balance, so that when she touches you, it feels like you have never been touched before. When she says your name, you think it was she who named you. When she has gone, you bury your face in the pillow to smell her hair and you lie awake at night remembering your face in her neck, her breathing and the amazing smell of her skin. Your eyes go wet because you want her so bad and miss her so much. Now that is worth the miles and the time. That matches the inferno of life. Otherwise you poison each other with your presence day after day as you drag each other through the inevitable mundane aspects of your lives. That is the slow death that I see slapped on faces everywhere I go. It’s part of the world’s sadness that’s more empty than cold, poorly lit rooms in cities of the American night.
