“I think…I might love you.” Duncan's eyes shot open wide, gaze snapping down to stare at Courtney, aghast. She gave no indication that she realized what she had just said; in fact, it looked like she had fallen asleep right after saying it. Shit. He shifted slightly beneath her, and she let out a sweet little sound that made his chest ache in simultaneously the best and worst ways. Shitshitshitshitshit. He couldn't do this. Suddenly feeling stifled, he waited until he was certain she was deep in slumber before sliding out from underneath her and booking it out of her room. Dipping into his own room to snag a cigarette from the stash he kept buried in his sock drawer, he threw open the bathroom window and climbed out onto the roof before lighting up and taking a long drag to settle his nerves. This wasn't how things were supposed to go. Logically, he knew they were bound for this from the moment she first kissed him - maybe even before that if he really dug deep - but the confirmation that this wasn't just something physical between them anymore had him clamming up in uncharacteristic ways. Even if Courtney hadn't been aware of what she had just confessed, that didn’t mean it wasn't true; he knew it, he felt it, and it scared the shit out of him. “She's your fucking step-sister, you asshole,” he grumbled to himself, pulling in another lung full of smoke before exhaling it in a giant plume through his mouth and nostrils. And so what if he loved her back, what then? Courtney was still so young, and she had a promising future ahead of her once she graduated. She didn't deserve the shit she would get for falling for a guy like him. They couldn't go on like this, he decided. It was getting too serious, and it was mostly his fault.

Courtney sneezed so hard she very nearly fell out of her bed. She couldn't believe this; she was always so careful, she took a multivitamin every single day, watched what she ate, made sure she got eight hours of sleep each night… How could she possibly be sick?! And of all the weekends, why did it have to be this one?! Their parents were visiting family a few hours away, and Gracie was at a sleepover, so she and Duncan would have the entire house to themselves for the first time since they started hooking up. What was more, she had been planning on asking him if they could finally have sex this weekend; a line he had been careful not to cross the entire time they had been sneaking around together.

Courtney chewed her lip as she tried to focus on studying, but her eyes kept flicking to the alarm clock on her nightstand without her permission. 7:56PM, the red numbers blared at her; only two minutes since the last time she checked - fifty-seven minutes since she started keeping track. Four more minutes until… Her gaze drew to her phone, sitting idly beside where her textbooks were strewn across her bedspread, and then she blinked and forced her attention back to the words on the page in front of her. After what felt like hours, she glanced up at the clock. 7:57PM Groaning, she threw herself back into the mountain of pillows at the head of her bed, resigned to the fact that she wouldn't be getting any more studying done that evening. Her mind wandered back to the conversation that started this whole mess, and her face ignited in a bright pink blush. “You're sure you don't mind taking Gracie to her tournament?” Timothy asked as Duncan shouldered his younger sister's soccer bag and twirled the keys to the family's sedan between his fingers. “Nah,” he said with a shrug, “bar's being fumigated this weekend, anyway, so it's not like I'm missing work or anything.” “I hate cutting into your free time…” Timothy sighed, running a hand through his graying hair, “I just don't want to leave Courtney to have to take care of your mother by herself while she's dealing with this nasty bout of morning sickness.” “I could handle it, Daddy,” she piped up, earning her a soft smile from her father. “I know you could, Pumpkin, but you've got that big test coming up. I don't want you running yourself ragged over it.” He placed a hand on her shoulder and squeezed once before letting go; the Lind’s weren’t a particularly affectionate bunch, so to Courtney, that was as good as a warm hug, and her face lit up. Duncan cleared his throat, dispelling the brief private moment, and two pairs of brown eyes turned to him. “Right, well, thank you, son,” Timothy gruffed, patting him on the shoulder as well before departing to check on Maeve. Courtney watched her father go with a fond curl to her lips, and then she turned her gaze to Duncan, who was busy collecting his wallet and phone and shoving them into the pockets of his ripped jeans. “So…” she hummed, clasping her hands behind her back and sidling up to him after looking around to make sure the two of them were alone. “You'll be gone for the whole weekend…” He arched his brow at her. “Yeah…” She didn't say anything for a long time - wasn't sure what exactly she wanted to say, really - but it seemed he sensed something in her expression as a sly grin spread across his face. “You gonna miss me, Princess?” Her eyes widened, and then she scoffed and tossed her hair flippantly. “As if. With you out of the house, I might actually be able to get some work done!” He snorted, rolling his eyes as he brought a hand up to hook a stray chestnut lock around his finger. “Uh-huh…” he said, unconvinced, and tugged until she was close enough for him to reach her ear.
“Well, if you change your mind, I should be free for a call at eight tonight,” he murmured, not waiting for her response as he stepped past her to stroll out the door.

This was horseshit. It was bad enough he was spending his very limited free time at a soccer tournament for ten-year-olds (he’d break every damn bone in his body if it ensured Gracie’s happiness, but even he had his limits). No, worse than watching a bunch of rugrats chasing a ball around a field for hours on end was having to endure the absolute torture of witnessing Courtney being hit on a few rows down from where he sat with the rest of their family in the bleachers. It was the prick who had stood her up for the Winter Formal - Jarvis? Jimmy? - he couldn't remember his name, but he'd recognize that blinding white grin anywhere. Apparently, his younger cousin played for one of the other teams - “What are the odds?” he’d told her with a charming smile, showing off his dimples in a way that made Duncan’s teeth grind. And now, close to an hour later, he was still talking to her - bumping her shoulder with his own, laughing at everything she said even if it wasn't funny, leaning in close to murmur in her ear… “I need a smoke,” he grumbled, and his mother briefly turned to him with a raised brow. "I thought you were trying to quit?” she prodded, and he shrugged as he stood with his hands shoved in the pockets of his leather jacket. “It's harder than I thought it'd be.”
BEFORE WRITING: Oh, this fic idea is so cute, and it won't take any time at all! WHILE WRITING: Oh...oh, no...I Underestimated this. Again.

It had been about a week since she had made just about the most impulsive decision in her life by becoming intimately involved with Duncan. Her step-brother. Her older step-brother, who drove a motorcycle, had tattoos and piercings, and likely didn't know how to spell the word “responsibility”. By all accounts, she shouldn't have been attracted to him, yet his touch alone electrified her in ways she had never experienced. He could set her alight with one look from those sharp eyes of his, send a shiver down her spine with a simple smirk, and it was maddening. She had hoped he would have put up more of a fight when she had gone to him about putting an end to their dalliance - had wanted him to try and convince her to keep sneaking around with him so she could make a fuss about the moral implications until eventually giving in. He had surprised her by caving so easily, but then she reasoned he had a lot more to lose by messing around with someone so young, even if she was technically of consenting age. She should have left well enough alone, but at the thought of him moving onto another woman, she couldn't stop something ugly and possessive from rising within her. And now, here they were, acting like nothing had happened when just a few hours ago he had snuck into her room and made out with her on her bed.

A baby. Half O'Reilly, half Lind. A blood relative of both Duncan and Courtney. As if he couldn't have felt any more like a creep. "Hello?" Tiny fingers clicked directly in front of his face, and he snapped out of his daze to realize he was just staring absently at the washing machine as his clothes went 'round. "Earth to Dunc," Gracie said from her place sitting atop the dryer, head cocked curiously, "where the hell did you go?" Shaking himself, he grumbled, "Don't fucking curse," before shooing her off her perch. His little sister snorted and tossed her thick braid over her shoulder as she hopped down. "I know that look. What did Courtney do this time?" He cut a stifling glare to her. "Nothing. Get lost." She must have learned how to roll her eyes like that from Courtney - he certainly hadn't taught her that - and she shot back, "Whatever, Mr. Moody. I've got soccer practice, anyway. You'll be at my game on Saturday?" Despite his irritable state, he softened for her slightly and nodded, ruffling her bangs (much to her vocal chagrin). "Wouldn't miss it for the world." She swatted his hand away, gave him a gap-toothed grin that dealt yet another blow to his tough guy image, and disappeared out the back door. Heaving a sigh, he took mental note of where everyone would be at this time of day and relished the thought of an empty house. "Did Gracie just leave?" An almost empty house.

He'd always been a fan of toeing the line, but now he was dangerously close to pole-vaulting over it without thinking about the consequences.
Courtney had a funny way of doing that to him - making him forget that she was young, that she was his step-sister and categorically off limits.

Please note the tags, everyone!! There is EXPLICIT cheating in this - it's not subtle, nor is it ambiguous. They are not morally in the right here.
It is also marked as "Underage" because both of them are in high school, and I know that squicks some folks.
Highly recommend checking out the song this fic is named after by Lustra.

Duncan stared unblinking at the closed door for several moments, mind still catching up with the whirlwind of events that just took place.
Not typically one to wax poetic, having Courtney laid out for him, falling apart on his tongue and around his fingers was unlike anything he had ever experienced.
And then she bolted.
She had called what they had done a mistake and left without an explanation, making him wonder if he had just gotten played.
And dammit, he could still taste her.
Swiping his tongue over his bottom lip, he fought every one of his impulses to go after her and make her explain herself to him.
No.
He was through chasing after her.
If she wanted to talk to him, she'd have to come to him this time.
And if she didn't, then that was that, and he'd let her run away with her tail between her legs, but he wouldn't go after her.
He wouldn't.

Light streamed through the crack between her curtains, piercing her skull and making her groan in pain.
"Morning, Sunshine!"
Courtney cursed and shoved her head further under her pillow as Bridgette came shuffling into the room looking fresh as a daisy.
"Ooo, bad hangover? Luckily for you, I brought you the perfect cure: greasy food and Aspirin!" she announced, placing a tray with a burger, a glass of water, and two pills on her nightstand.
"How are you so chipper right now?" she groused, throwing back her covers and snatching the water and Aspirin first.
"You drank just as much as I did last night!"
Bridgette shrugged and plopped down in her desk chair.
"Higher tolerance. You've never drank that much before, so of course you're gonna be feeling it this morning."
Courtney let out an unintelligible grunt, chugging almost the entire glass under her friend's watchful eye.
"How much do you remember from last night?" she asked carefully, and Courtney frowned as she made a grab for the burger next.
"We did a couple shots of tequila-"
"More than a couple of shots," Bridgette interrupted with a haunted expression, and Courtney winced.
"Right. Then we…danced? Oh my gosh, I danced in front of all those people!"
She whined and smacked her forehead, regretting the action as it made the headache throbbing behind her eyes worsen.
"Yeah…that was embarrassing…"
They both sat in thoughtful silence for a few seconds before Courtney sighed and leaned back against her pillows.
"Everything else is a little fuzzy…do you remember anything past the dancing?"
The blonde frowned.
"Geoff showed up at one point and made me drink some water. Felt better after that. He even walked me home."
A light blush dusted across Bridgette's cheeks, and Courtney's lips twitched despite her miserable state.
It was no secret that there were romantic feelings there, but she wisely remained silent and tucked into her food instead, lest her friend decide to turn the tables on her.
"I do not, however, know what happened to you while Geoff was taking care of me. He assured me you were fine when I got worried, though…"
Courtney's brows drew together, and she rubbed her head as she tried to recall the events of the previous evening that were whirling around in a dizzying array of images.
"Well, I'm sure after a cold shower I'll be able to think straight," she finally said with a shrug, trying not to let on how concerned she was over the missing pieces in last night's timeline.
Bridgette gave her a look that said she was doing a horrible job, but she didn't push her, instead simply patted her on the thigh before departing and leaving Courtney alone with her thoughts.
As she stripped out of her pajamas - at least she had had the foresight to change out of her grimy dress before falling into bed - she tried yet again to remember what had happened after she and Bridgette made their debut on the dance floor.
It wasn't until the cold spray of the shower hit her that her memories came back to her in one giant wave, and her mortified scream could likely be heard halfway down the block.
College Age Heather
Heather is a Poli-sci major and the President of her sorority. She definitely did some shady stuff to get in that position, since I believe she beat Courtney out for it. She's just better at playing the game.

"Men ain't shit, Court," Bridgette muttered from her spot slumped across the bartop, empty shot glasses scattered around her.
Courtney tsk'd and shook her head, delicately sipping her sparkling water as she ran soothing circles over her friend's back with the other hand.
"I could've told you that," she said, and the blonde let loose a mournful groan before downing another shot of tequila.
"Should've listened to you. I just…"
Bridgette grumbled and buried her face in her arms, her voice coming out muffled so that Courtney had to lean closer to hear her properly.
"I thought he was The One, y'know?"
The brunette frowned.
"Um, no. I don't, actually."
That caught her friend's attention, and one hazel eye glanced up at her from the crook of her elbow.
"You've never been in love?"
