In Poland we don’t say “hazel eyes”, instead we say “oczy piwne” which literally translates to “beer eyes” and I think it’s beautiful.

To that person wanting to learn Polish: look for a tandem partner, too. I am not sure whether this is a thing in your country, but in Germany there are numerous tandem FB groups and it's really helpful for language learners. What you basically do is ask for help in a language and in return you can offer help in another language, if possible.

'Ś' shounds like 'sh' and 'sz' sounds more like the 's' version of 'cz'? Does that make sense? I think that's the best I can explain it. :-P (You said you couldn't tell the two apart in soun so I thought I might try )

For the person who says they're fully polish, they should ask their parents to speak polish in front of them because that's the best way to immerse yourself and learn quicker. My parents don't speak English to me to help me practice always

Definitely :) It’s also nice to practice with your parents because they don’t care if you make mistakes and they will, sometimes, nicely correct you lol.

Ahhh I don’t know. It depends on how much time you dedicate to it. If you really want to improve then I’d say get some books or CDs teaching it, Rosetta Stone kind of thing, which you can even get for free from a library. Learn the basic things- greetings, question words, and simple conversation, then build from there.

Hi! I really want to learn Polish, but am struggling to know where to even begin. My boyfriend's parents, like yours from what I've read in your 'about me", immigrated from Poland and had him here in America. He grew up speaking Polish and learned English at a young age. He is very little help because he doesn't realize how tricky the language is. Any advice? Thanks!

I’m not sure where he should start. I posted a lot of websites he could try. Probably the more structured books, CDs, etc. might be helpful which you could buy somewhere or get from a library. Best thing would be to talk with his parents more or go to Poland as much as possible. It’s important not to try too much at one time. Have to be exposed to the language and try to understand it a little at a time. Learning a language should be filled with sparks of interest and not stress over little grammar rules. Listen to Polish music or watch films, to really hear the accent well. Hope this helps :)

About that anon who asked about Polish, Russian & Ukrainian: my friend studies Ukrainian & Polish at Uni and she has confirmed this many times that Ukrainian sounds much more like Polish than Russian.

How did you learn to write in Polish? :D (I saw on other asks that you were born/live in the US)

The nice thing about Polish is that it’s written exactly how it’s said. I never actually learned how to write. I learned how to speak first and then the writing came naturally. I do of course make mistakes at times because for example, u and ó are the exact same sound, same with rz/ż and ch/h. A lot of times I don’t know whether to write sz or ś, even though people tell me they’re different...I don’t really hear it lol. My writing isn’t perfect but I’m pretty good at it; it’s the grammar that kills you.
