Yeah, sure, seeing new things is helpful as a fantasy writer. But. Don’t make the mistake of assuming that exposure to new things is the same as traveling. You know what else exposes you to new things?  The internet. Documentaries. Books. Freaking Youtube. So when you’re bored of cats and cooking tutorials, go on an adventure!

You wanna write create some fantasy creatures but don’t know where to start? Go check out some videos The Weird Creatures Earth has Had.

Want some inspiration for your Super Evil Villain’s Villanous Deeds?

Or maybe you want some weird locations to kick start your Fantasy World Terraforming?

Or maybe you need knowledge of bunches of historical places and cities and cultures?

But maybe you’re basing fantasy on the modern world?

Okay but lets say you want to start from the same inspiration as GRRM? (and part two!)

That’s just the stuff I could quickly grab. Things I’m subscribed to, that I know offhand. There is So. Much. Stuff. Online.

The best thing about the internet is that it means its not just the fortunate sons that get to learn, and explore and imagine and write. We get to see stories from all over the place, from all sorts of people, who bring All Kinds of New Ideas.

Seeing ten other cultures from the perspective of a tourist is not necessarily going to get you more useful insights than reading three decent history papers.

And a good chunk of JSTOR is free to read, even if their in-browser reader is intentionally awful.

Mae hi'n ______ / It's _____

Adding "iawn" after a weather condition makes it "very" that condition:

Mae hi'n braf / It's nice

Mae hi'n braf iawn / It's very nice

Mae hi'n ddiflas, on'd yw hi? / It's miserable, isn't it?

Ydy hi'n sych? / Is it dry? (answer with ydy/nac ydy)

Dyw hi ddim yn braf iawn / It's not very nice

I’ve made several posts already about the Welsh language, but I’m only now realising that many people who see my posts might think “Okay, but why would you want to learn Welsh?”, so I decided it might be a good idea to post about why I personally believe Welsh is a language people should learn!

Elvish Hymn Recited by a Native Welsh Speaker

I thought some of you would be interested in this. I uploaded it today.

Here is part of Tolkien’s ‘A Elbereth Gilthoniel’. Sindarin, the Elvish language in which this hymn was written was based on the phonology of the Welsh language. It was adapted into a longer version for the 'Passing of The Elves’ scene in the Lord of The Rings film.

Usually, you only ever hear Elvish being spoken by English speakers, who carry a very different accent and phonology into spoken Elvish. However, as a native Welsh speaker, I knew I could make a recording of Elvish that had a different flavour to it since I already speak the language that Sindarin was inspired by. It might actually be the first recording of a native Welsh speaker speaking Elvish on Youtube, or possibly the internet.
