We’ve posted several images by Gustave Doré from this same book of Fables y Jean de la Fontaine. This particular one, the Council of the Rats, was new to us. A group of rats tries to solve the problem of a hungry cat decimating their numbers. The head rat suggests belling the cat to provide a warning. However, some rat will need to try and put the bell on the cat. Not surprisingly, no one volunteers. The lesson of the fable is that a plan is only a good one if it can actually be implemented; having a good idea is not enough.
From: Fables (1872)
October 16th is Global Cat Day! This observance was created in 2001 to encourage people around the world to take steps to improve the health of and reduce the numbers of unowned outdoor cats in their communities. Cat fanciers can celebrate the day through actions like supporting local shelters and getting involved in local Trap-Neuter-Return programs (there is, in fact, such a thing as too many cats!). This gif was created from an 1889 glass plate negative in the Hagley Library’s P.S. du Pont Longwood photographs collection (Accession 1969.002). The photograph was taken at Phillips Academy, where Pierre S. du Pont’s brother, Henry Belin du Pont, was a student from 1888 to 1890. A bakery has to have a cat. The rats would eat all the profits. Pompon and his wife Pomponette save 10 kilos of flour a day.
