(Oc lore context: Gerhard's family owns a colonial business in Qing China which they later fleed the country during the Siege of Tsingtao in 1914. Ulrich's father is an Imperial German officer who participated in massacres and utilized civilian hostages as cannonfodders in Belgium during the Great War.)
Grietje Lina Hellwig is one of the supporting characters, she's known and celebrated as an actress in Germany during ww2 and also suprisingly, Franz Otto Hellwig is her younger brother. Just like her mother who's also known on stage and screen, she is popular among the Germans for her radiant charm, playful wit, extravagant mannerisms and an almost childlike sense of wonder. She laughs easily, loves dresses elegantly, and seems almost incapable of taking anything seriously. But beneath that image, she is actually working with the Allies and the Dutch resisrance, using her fame and access to important people to pass information to underground contacts.
Despite being part of the resistance and an agent undercover, she sees Franz less as an Wehrmacht soldier and more as the little boy she grew up with, which is why she alwyas avoids mentioning him, his regiment, or his associations to the Allies or the resistance. She knows that revealing speaking of him could potentially put him or their family in danger, especially if the resistance begins treating him as an enemy target or the Gestapo discovers his connection to her. Although she actively works against the Nazi regime and provides valuable information, she draws a firm personal line when it comes to her brother. Franz would've also have her back.
- Set during the German occupation of France, a dysfunctional Wehrmacht 161th artillery regiment becomes increasingly unstable since the loss of its current commanding officer had passed away during the invasion. It follows an disconnected aristocratic officer who joined the regiment shortly after the invasion, his emotionally perceptive and flamboyant but overburdened adjutant, and unexpectedly, a defiant working-class soldier form an unstable triangle of dependence that begins to collapse as war forces them into escalating moral compromises, until loyalty to each other becomes indistinguishable from betrayal of themselves.
PRINCIPAL CHARACTERS:
1. FRANZ OTTO HELLWIG
Born in 1918, Eindhoven, Netherlands to a middle-class family, Franz is the youngest son of a former Dutch actress known for her elegance and theatrical flair in european cinemas and his father, a meticulous German tailor several years her junior, embodied precision and dedication to craftsmanship. Between their union, Franz inherited both love of spectacle, perfection, and eye for details, mostly inheriting those traits from his mother. He grew up alongside an older sister who remained rooted in the Netherlands, wanting to follow on their mother's footsteps.
As a boy, Franz developed an unusual ambition where he wanted to be a fashion designer and idolized Coco Chanel as his role model, often designing clothes to his schoolwork and even borrowing scraps of fabric from his father's shop and listening to his mother's recollection of her prime acting years as reference. By the time he was a teenager, he moved to Heidelberg, Germany, to his father's homecity and sent to a boarding school and his sister followed by 3 years apart to pursue an acting career. There, Franz was able to quickly German though he spoke it with a heavy accent and honed his mathematical talent, yet it was always overshadowed by his dramatic mannerisms and sharp wit in which it made him stood out among the other boys but admired by the others. The strict environment of his schooling may have tried to iron out his eccentricity but Franz's personality had only sharpened.
When the war arrived, Franz was drawn into service with the Wehrmacht along with his peers albeit reluctantly. His precise mathematical skills placed him in the artillery corps where he rose as an Unteroffizier. Among the men, he quickly stood up as a strikingly unconventional leader, and as an Unteroffizier, he is a liaison between enlisted men and superior officers which later on he was promoted to become an adjutant to officers. To others, his flamboyance seemed unmilitary and amusing often earning him the name 'der Pfau', but his competence and charisma kept morale high in terms of crisis. Privately, he keeps a journal to himself where he designs clothes, dreaming that when the war ends he would go back to Eindhoven and pursue a fashion designing career.
2. GERHARD PAUL VON GRAF
Born in 1914, Hamburg. Gerhard is the second son of four siblings of an old aristocratic family, never meant to inherit more than a quiet military career or granted a minor administrative role within the Graf family estate. His early years were defined by relative freedom compared to his elder brother, who was groomed relentlessly as the heir. But fate had other plans when the supposed heir died in a riding accident at his eighteenth birthday. Overnight, Gerhard’s life was rewritten, he was now the heir of the family legacy and a man whose life is dictated by duty and order. His father, an old Baron shaped by the old order and bitter by Germany's defeat in the Great War despite the family having no part in the war itself but rather in the far east had raised Gerhard not as a son but rather a replacement and a continuation of their legacy and his mother had little part on his life other than preserving the family's appearance. Tutors and caretakers were the only ones that raised him as a man yet for Gerhard, it always felt hollow.
As the heir, Gerhard now understood that his life was no longer his own, it would be selfish if he were to abandon it all as he thought. He was trained in the traditions of the aristocracy, fencing, classical elite education, etiquette. On the other, he witnessed the crumbling reality outside the estate walls: inflation, unrest, and a Germany struggling to redefine itself post-war and now the estate depended on one thing, an strategic marriage to preserve its standing, a woman of another noble family chosen not for love but necessity and neither Gerhard or the woman had ever been close to each other. To the Graf estate, the marriage was a duty and for Gerhard, it was life sentence that binds him to a role he was never meant to take and live in the shadow of his deceased brother he could never equal.
In 1935, as Germany rearmed under a new regime two years prior and the Wehrmacht expanded, Gerhard seized what he saw, freedom disguised as duty. Framing his decision as an honorable aristocratic tradition, he enlisted, deflecting suspicion while breaking free from the grip of the estate's expectation and unofficially, it was only an act of defiance that he could only understand. The army offered him anonymity, distance, and a stubborn illusion of of belief that maybe someday there will be a life that he could only choose for himself. Even as he traded estate walls for barracks and ceremony for command, he could not entirely outrun the truth, whether as heir or soldier, his life remained by being shaped by duty, loss, and a past that refused to let go.
3. SEPP ALOIS BAUER
Born in 1921 in the Alps of Upper Bavaria bordering Austria to a poor small farming village, Sepp's family lived in a small plot of land that yielded just enough to keep the hunger at in good times and very little in bad ones. With five siblings crowding their wooden house, a mother who keeps the house intact, and a stepfather hardened by years of labor, every pair of hands mattered in their lives. From an early age, he learned to be honest and resilient, he carried water buckets twice his weight, tend to crops and animals, and work on soil along with his siblings, that was the only thing keeping the household intact. Despite the economic strain, there was still warmth on the wooden household, no matter how little they had, the Bauer family had endured it together.
For Sepp, education was a luxury that came and went with seasons. He attended when the roads were passable and the farm could spare him, but more often than not, he was always needed at home or in markets helping sell what little surplus their family could manage. His education remained patchy, leaving him restless and aware of opportunities he could grasp. As he grew older, the village had became too small and the weight of poverty was getting familiar. With little ceremony, at the age of 17 he and a few older siblings left the mountains to search for steadier work, carrying little more than a change of clothes and money, a quiet determination to carve out a better life.
Beyond the Alps, Germany didn't offer him an easy path. Jobs were scarce, and without strong schooling or connections, he drifted between temporary labor and long stretches of uncertainty. Pride kept Sepp from returning home empty-handed, yet each passing time wore down his options. When the chance came to join the army for the incoming war, it presented itself less as a calling and more as a way out, a promise of structure, and belonging that ordinary life had denied him. He enlisted not out of passion, but maybe out of necessity, stepping into something he couldn't even comprehend but maybe something of a new experience and adventure and he had nothing to lose.

CENTRAL CONFLICT
While France is under occupation and the Allies are closing in, resistance activity increases and orders become harsher throughout the war, the 161th regiment is drawn into cruel operations that forces men to confront the reality of what they are complicit in. Gerhard must decide whether if he should continue hiding behind rank and title or accept the cost of command he is responsible with. Franz is pushed to choose between loyalty to the man and the closest friend he serves and the principles he cannot ignore. And Sepp, who had always rejected authority, must deal with the consequences of his defiance and recklessness when survival depends on the very system he despises.
The question is, can they still maintain loyalty and survival within a collapsing military structure, when their personal bonds, social differences, and moral beliefs are pulling them in incompatible directions? Who knows, but they are just mere participants trapped in a system of war and hierarchy that is slowly breaking down like any other men, and as it does their dependence on each other grows but so does their moral and emotional instability.
In a war where obedience is survival, one of them must decide whether keeping their place in the hierarchy is worth losing themselves.
The 161th Artillery Regiment - "Lordschafts Jungen"

- The 161th was formed in late 1938, integrated among infantry divisions after the Anschluss. Its ranks were mostly filled with working-class conscripts, middle-class men, and any of the ordinary type, while the officer corps drew heavily from the elite families which earned the regiment a nickname among the neighboring units mockingly; "Lordschafts Jungen".
Under its original commanding officer, Ulrich Detlev von Waldburg, a strict Prussian seasoned officer from an prestige military academy, the regiment developed a reputation for discipline tempered with pragmatism. However, his death during the invasion of France marked a turning point for the regiment where Ulrich was replaced by Gerhard Paul von Graf, a younger aristocrat who has little experience in frontlines.

1. Red Land, White Strands
Following the Pacific Theater, centered on Alisa Brzenska, or with her fake identity "Alexei Volkov", a Polish-Russian immigrants who was forced to enlist in the Marines because of the marksman skill she has. There, she experiences what she would never imagine to. On the other side, there's Rei Moriya, a woman whose runaway from her home in Okinawa. Disguised herself as a man, and become a soldier of the Japanese Empires to defend her hometown.
2. Between the War; after all
Irina Aksentyeva Rostova fall into the same situation as what Alisa, her cousin forced into. But in difference, she enlist in the Airborne, in European Theater, with the name "Alexander Rossie". Soon, she is partnered up with a medic combat named Leonid "doc Adios" Arcadius Lavallee. Experienced the horrifying of D-Day, Market Garden, Battle of Bulge and the following battles.
3. Negligence Behind Trust
Centered on a German man, Erich Schäfer Horstmann, a tank crews as the radio operator (and secondary commander) throughout the war that his nation created. With his partner, Eldwin Wymond Schmidt, the driver of the tank. In which, Erich faces bitterness due to his act of feigning ignorance the reality.
4. Binding Threat
Aleksander Rakovschik Rostov, the older brother of Irina. After years immigrated to Louisiana, America, was reluctantly back to Russia, serving the motherland as the part of the Red Army. Assigned as a commander of a crewmate tank. Later, having reunion with Irya Eliseev, a retired air force navigator, now working in administration and papers. Irya was his childhood friend and past lover, whom he left after moving out. Together they face the struggles in war, battle from external yet also from the internal.
5. Reunite with Blood
Throughout the Battle of Surabaya, a TKR private, Najeem Adiwilaga, has to face the Dutch & British army invasion in East Java, Indonesia. Where one of the Royal Netherlands Army's soldiers is Jochem Van Den Akker, Najeem's old childhood friend. The two "best friend" are forced to fight against each other despite their beliefs. The nations put two souls that used to be hand in hand now dirty their hands in the name of independence or power.
6. Au Revoir; Vaarwel
Or with its alternative chapter named, "Flying souls", told the story of the son's from the Great War's French doctor veteran, Johnathan Ambroise. He becomes a Medic from what his father taught him, alongside with Pauline Sauveur, a nurse he will get engaged to later. In other side, a self-taught Dutchman pilot, Derek Van Den Velde who later joined the RAF after getting helped by John and Pauline.
