St George’s Hall

Today was our IIB away day and I had to sit through hours of talks and posters and stuff and that was all well and good, if not a bit boring. What really ruined the day though was the memories of the last time I visited St George’s Hall and how we spent hours wandering through the art and craft stalls and it really upset me that I couldn’t appreciate the beauty of such a magnificent building. And I think today is the day I actually realised I'm more broken than I thought and how this is my first evening alone and how all at once these feelings have overwhelmed and consumed me and I don’t know what to do with them or how to make them go away.

The entirety of April I wait for the 28th to come around. I get anxious for the couple of months before. I forget the exact date and check it a hundred times. I spend so much of March and April remembering that day in work three years ago. I wait in dread and fear because when it does come around I know I will be forced to remember. Three years ago I lost one of my best friends and though memories and feelings fade with time, anniversaries will always hit you with a surprising clout. Anniversaries can be happy but ones like these fill me fear because Dave was the first person I lost who I really cared for. I mean, I’d lost grandparents but I was always too young to really appreciate the emotional responsibility that comes with losing someone. And after Dave died I really realised that this is what it is to be an adult. 

You’ll slowly watch, one by one, the people in your life leave this planet and slowly and slowly you’ll wait for your turn. Because the reality is, I don’t think many people expect to die. I know Dave didn’t. Tragic accidents and unknown conditions scrape the world of your friends and family. And I think that day it really dawned on me that I could really lose the people I love. I began to fear that I wasn’t spending enough time with my family and I sometimes felt guilty for choosing to be so far away. I yearned to be a child again so I wouldn’t have to deal with the thought of never seeing Dave again. But that wasn’t an option. My only option was to carry on, to power through because I didn’t know many people in Liverpool to cry to, none knew Dave and a part of me thought, “how could anyone even understand what I was going though?”. 

But I won’t be the first to lose a friend and I won’t be the last and people do understand and people will be there for you if you ask. I didn’t ask and what ensued was nearly 2 years of disordered eating and finding comfort in the lack of eating. I felt good that I could actually control something, and I was good at it. It was my decision and I wasn’t doing it for the pleasure of anyone else but me. It was my thing, it was mine. I was selfish for a few years, and not the best person to be around, I sometimes wondered if I carried on and on whether it would be me next to go and sometimes that scared me but I wasn’t ready to change. 

Losing friends is hard, but I’ve come to accept now that people leave for a reason, whether that is out of their control with death or if they walk away by choice. Seeing your friend lowered into the ground is something I never wish on anyone, and it’s a poignant memory I’ll never forget. Grief is a funny thing because it never goes away really. I still light a candle every year, and every year I talk to Dave despite my scientific mind thinking that the afterlife is just an illusion. I ask the things I always wished I had asked, knowing that I will never get a response. I tell him about what’s been going on in my life despite knowing he will never hear me. I tell him how his girlfriend is okay now, and is doing well with life. 

Grief is a funny thing, it makes you stronger, it made me crazy for a couple of years, but eventually I came out stronger with a better perspective. I’ll never know the reason why Dave left us, I’m not sure I ever will. But what I do know is that it’s okay to be sad about it; remember the good times and then close the book in my mind until next year when April comes round again and the next year and the next year…
