“We’ll Bring The Pie”
Give us two years, and we’ll bring the pie.
First, we’ll choose our favorite calf—
In 24 months, she’ll give us milk.
Next November, we’ll plant the seed cane—
It will grow for 12 months.
In the meantime, we’ll travel East for spices—
Cinnamon from Sri Lanka, ginger from India, nutmeg and cloves from Indonesia, and salt from the Himalayas.
We’ll plant the wheat in March—
Spring wheat likes cool temperatures.
Come May, we’ll get a chicken—
We’ll care for her and she’ll become a happy hen.
Then, we’ll plant the pumpkin—
And then, we’ll wait.
Until—
The right time!
We’ll . . .
Harvest the wheat and grind it into flour.
Harvest the sugar cane, crush it, and filter it into sugar.
Cut the pumpkin off the vine, bake it, and mush it.
Gather 4 eggs.
Milk the cow.
Skim off the cream, and churn it into butter.
(Almost there!)
Then, we’ll . . .
Mix the flour, butter, 1 egg, and roll out the crust.
Mix purée, spices, milk, and 3 eggs, and pour onto the crust.
And, finally—we’ll pop it in the oven.
That’s it! In two years and 45 minutes we’ll have . . .
Pumpkin pie!
