alright I've got to do some quick math to explain attitudes towards AI to my boss.

we're looking to create an AI policy, and when we were talking about this, my boss (older millennial) was genuinely shocked to hear that younger people do not (seem) to view AI positively (a la the recent commencement speakers being booed)

I just watched John Carpenters cult cosmic horror classic The Thing for the first time and the gay underpinnings in MacCready and Fuchs’s relationship stood out to me. Obviously this wasn’t Carpenter’s intention and it’s a bit of a stretch but hear me out:

Main character pilot extraordinaire RJ MacCready trusts no one else besides biology assistant Fuchs and vice versa as the Alien Happenings begin, enough that Fuchs goes out of his way to confide in MacCready that Blair, the lead biologist, is acting strange. This trust and closeness becomes super tragic when Fuchs goes out into the night and finds MacCreadys torn shirt in the snow, which its shown and discussed by the characters that the Thing will shred through and remove clothing in order to get into the assimilation process. It’s left open to viewer interpretation but not long after, Fuchs kills himself via self immolation. It’s implied by Maccready who discovers his corpse that he killed himself to prevent assimilation from the Thing. This is the most reasonable assumption but allow me to play Gay Shipping Roulette with this plot point: if I were madly in love with someone I’m trapped in an Antarctic base with, surviving an alien menace disguising itself as my peers, and it became seemingly clear that the teams fearless leader (that I’m madly in love with,) is actually the Thing in disguise leading us all astray, I would be despondent. Enough to kill myself? Possibly. Furthermore, Fuchs death marks a watershed moment for MacCready in the narrative, as he becomes increasingly desperate and self-destructive. Prior to this moment, MacCready is the most level headed and focused person in the group. Afterwards, the remaining team members lock MacCready out after finding the same shirt that Fuchs did, fearing that he’d become assimilated. MacCready, to his credit, manages to break back into the base and obtain dynamite and flares, which he uses to coerce his peers into a test to discover who among them is infected. This level of unhinged intensity and self sacrifice continues to escalate and culminates in the destruction of the entire base with explosives. I don’t know about you, but this sounds a lot like someone with nothing to lose and a lost loved one to rejoin in the afterlife.

I’ll reiterate that this definitely wasn’t Carpenter’s intentions, but it’s pride month and my brain has an endless hunger for queer rep and subtext, and this movie (all male cast btw, gay ass choice,) scratched that itch for me. Canon is the strong foundation for any story but it can be bent to my will for the sake of imagining two men kissing. Anyway, thanks for indulging my gay mania and reading this, it means a lot.

when people tag posts "unreality" it's a signal to people who struggle with discerning reality that a (likely scary if believed to be true) post is not real even though it's written as if it was. it's also a filter tag so those people can opt out of seeing posts like that entirely. many people who rely on the unreality tag are psychotic and struggle with paranoia alongside (or because of) the struggles discerning what's real. posts that these people interpret to be real can lead to incredible distress and compulsions.

when someone tags your post "#unreality" and you screenshot the tags and say "what are you talking about? this is real" because you consider the post easy to discern as not real and find this joke funny you're actually just causing paranoia for people who now feel like they can't trust the unreality tag. not everyone has the same reality discernment skills as you. what's "obviously" a fictional story to you may not be obvious to other people.

I don't think most people make this joke maliciously. I think most people making this joke don't even realize why the unreality tag exists. anyways, if you've made this joke or have the urge to make this joke then consider not doing that.
