I think it's taken me a long time to understand, but I don't want company for my consumption of upsetting and bizarre media. My fixation on extreme vintage horror and the stimulation I get from it isn't really matched by anyone around me - and that's okay! I don't consume it with the mindless gaze of the uncritical genre identitarian (I like to think), but something about taking in low budget visions made by probable hacks is so fixating. No one seems to understand the careful balance of macabre introspection and wide-eyed, frivolous joy of seeing seeing something ugly on purpose, not the *same* as I do, anyway. I don't doubt they get something out of it- something meaningful- but the energy in the room never seems to match my own. Some activities really are best enjoyed alone.
