arthur spreads his palms wide, a silent appeal. " uriens is the grandest of my petty kings still in need of a wife. i did not think leodegans" guinevere's father "worthy of you, but if you would prefer him...." he is teasing, a hopeful, oddly boyish look to his eyes that longs to not upset his sister. morgawse and elaine are forever elusive to him as sisters, but morgan is here. she is willing where the others are not, and arthur, who spent so long dreaming of sisters even before he knew he had them, is desperate to not lose that.

he lowers his hands, sitting back in his seat. " if you have other suggestions, i am open to them. your happiness is important to me." a touch of uncharacteristic shyness colors the confession; it's the most intimacy he's confessed to morgan. " but you must marry. you know that."

uriens is a king, yes, and perhaps that in of itself should be enough to soften her heart towards the man, but still she nurses a sense of hesitancy, a suspicion that she might find that there is little to recommend the man as a husband. what good is a king to her if he disappoints her as a man? 'but not so important that you might consider allowing me more time to choose and wait until i find someone i think to be worthy of me.' morgan reproaches though the edge in her tone softens as she forces a strained smile.

'i am well aware what is required of me and i do not wish to disappoint you.' she does not need her half-brother to tell her what is expected of women in the world they inhabit. in fact, she is luckier than most in arthur's willingness to actually listen to her. how many other women can say their brothers considered their happiness when striving to marry them off?

'if your alliance with uriens is truly so important to you, i will marry him as you wish, but...i would like to be assured that i will always have a place at your court should i find that his domain suits me ill.'

'do you ever think of father?' its a question more suited to a child than a woman nearly grown as morgan is, but its a question that slips free before she can stop herself. many years had passed since the untimely death of the duke of cornwall and yet not for a moment had would morgan cease to forget that she was gorlois' daughter.

'I used to think i could somehow manage to recall his face and the sound of his voice, but more and more, i doubt myself and wonder if I am not imagining up fantasies for the sake of comfort.' the older she gets, the more unfair the world seems to her. why is it that men have the power to destroy lives with a few words or the flick of a blade when they are creatures so easily led by their emotions?

‘ah, sir lancelot. but where is your shadow: my dear brother? or perhaps it’s the other way around.’ morgan’s mood is subtly but undeniably exultant for the relief of being able to take refuge from her unpleasant marriage at camelot’s court by serving as one of guinevere’s ladies has not completely lost its novelty. there is pleasure to be had in donning the mantle of queen, but little and less pleasure in being uriens wife, which is why camelot's court has become preferable to her husband's domain.

it is inevitable that she will have to return to her husband's side sooner or later (unless the man does her a favor and drops dead), but until then, she will focus only on her present freedom and the welcome liberties she can take for herself when away from her husband's suspicious eyes.

'i am glad to see that you are well. in fact, all of my brother's court seems entirely unchanged since my absence.' perhaps there's a touch of bitterness there, a seed of resentment that might grow if tended to with the proper degree of malice. for her brother, his wife, lancelot and most courtiers at court, life remains the same as it ever was while she has to contend with a marriage that was not of her own making.

‘far be it from me to gainsay what has already been decided, but can uriens truly be said to be a worthy match for your sister?’ half-sister? but semantics matter little to her in the greater scheme of things. to marry uriens will be to become a queen, but it will also mean she will be bound to the man for the entirety of her life and he is a stranger to her and his domain one she knows little of.

‘would it not be better to wait and see if some other suitors might serve camelot’s interests better?’ marriage is inevitable for a woman of her position: the daughter of gorlois and igraine, and half-sister to camelot’s king, but she is of a mind to try and have some choice in the matter of her husband.

‘and what if uriens should wish me to dwell only at his court? would it not grieve you to be parted from your sister?’ morgan points out with a tone that is deftly light-hearted.
