This is your OC captain speaking, aka the person behind all the craziness on this blog, but feel free to call me Luce, or Lucy. I love baking, writing, and editing, and though I'm pretty mediocre at all three they bring me a lot of joy. I really like world-building and have a fun time trying to put the pieces together of unresolved things in stories (aka. what's going on in the lives of the side characters while the main folks are off saving the world). I know I've been relatively absent for the latter half of this year but I just wanted to wish everyone a happy holiday season. Fingers crossed this next year will be a little kinder to us all.

Merrick was never the best student when he was in school. In fact, he struggled a lot to keep up with his peers in the more academically dense disciplines. Transfiguration felt nearly impossible to wrap his head around, Potions and History of Magic were always lacking, and his patience tended to wane when confronted with plant care in Herbology even if he did enjoy the natural aspect. There were two areas, however, in which he managed to excel: Care of Magical Creatures, and Defense Against the Dark Arts. Merrick had always been fond of owls and other birds since he was young and while his education in magical creatures extended outside the realm of such animals, he enjoyed it nonetheless and often situated himself in the Owlry. In spite of his mediocre grades in the majority of subjects, though, he had come so close to graduating. A little more than a year and he would've had his certificate and a full NEWT grade card. That one year could've changed everything, but after falling out with his parents, he refused to go back.
House: Hufflepuff
Perhaps Merrick should've taken it as a sign of his family's lack of understanding for his nature that the only one who seemed certain that he'd end up in Hufflepuff was his brother. All others considered Gryffindor most likely, though his parents had still hoped for Ravenclaw. While they were not disappointed by his sorting, there did come with it a certain level of surprise as he wrote home to tell them of what had transpired. However, being encircled in the gentle golden hues of the Hufflepuff Common Room was never a sorry sight for him, and was in fact a comfort seldom found for him at Hogwarts.
Wand: Blackthorn wand with a Dragon Heartstring core, 11" and rigid flexibility
It was a curious feature of the blackthorn bush, which sported wicked thorns, that it produced its sweetest berries after the hardest frosts, and the wands made from this wood appeared to need to pass through danger or hardship with their owners to become truly bonded. Given this condition, the blackthorn wand would become as loyal and faithful a servant as one could wish.
Boggart: His brother's body, twisted and bloodied
Riddikulus: A large, flapping owl with a comical, exaggeratedly large beak, squawking in a ridiculous, high-pitched voice
Patronus: Incorporeal wisps
Amortentia (how he smells): A mix of earthy and spicy scentsโwet leaves, burning wood, coffee grounds, and ale
Eye color: Brown, with the faintest hint of gold around the iris
Skin tone: Pale
Hair: Red, thick, and tousled with a slightly darker undertone. Often messy.
Voice: Gravelly with a rough edge that becomes more pronounced after a few drinks. Thereโs a certain terse authority to his voice, even in casual conversation that can make even the kindest of words seem more demanding than intended.
Food: Comfort foods like meat pies, hearty stews, and anything that reminds him of home. Heโs always had a soft spot for muggle pastries.
Likes: Coffee, owls and other birds, muggle radio, holidays (for the festivity or an excuse to get hammered? we'll never know), local markets, quiet nights
Dislikes: Purebloods & blood purists, arrogance, stale biscuits, youth fatalities

Spending habits: He's not particularly wealthy and tends to live frugally
Smokes: Yes
Drinks: Yes
Mannerisms: Often fidgets with his jacket collar when anxious. Heโs also known for cracking his knuckles during tense moments.
Grew up in Scotland in a wizard household that tried to uphold certain standards of "class" and purity
Left home at 16 after a very contentious fight with his parents about his prospects in the wizarding world and their own perception of wizard supremacy
Having very few prospects in the muggle world and even fewer in the wizarding world, he enlisted in the Army at 18 after his brother died and severed nearly all ties to magic
Ended up joining the OTC later on and became a "career soldier"
During the early stages of the Great War received an owl from his sister-in-law imploring him to join the Owl Airforce
Aids the Airforce in his "off" periods
Rose through the ranks in the army and after his superior was blown up by a mine amidst the ongoing Great War, was promoted to major.
Ended up taking a bullet through the helmet in the late winter of 1917, never seeing the end to the war.
She rests firmly entrenched in her belief in the importance of maintaining family "honor" and status within the wizarding community.
Father: Abelard Brume
A distant and emotionally cold man, whose harsh expectations pushed Merrick into a strained relationship. Abelard had strong blood purist tendencies but kept them subtly hidden under a mask of propriety.
Brother: Hadrian Brume
It was hard being the focus of the family's affectionsโor so Merrick imagined. Hadrian always seemed to have a leg up on him but he was thankfully never an ass about it; they probably wouldn't have been as close as they were if he had been. He died younger than he should've while out on an auror mission, only a couple of years after Merrick left home. It was a grief worse felt than that of separating from his parents.
Sister-in-law: Josephine Brume
Merrick always found Jo to be a bit too uptight and judgemental. Yet love was love, and he couldn't fault his brother for who he chose as his wife. He could secretly fault him though for transfering a misplaced kind of duty of care onto himself after Hadrian's death. She was the sister he never wanted but nonetheless was compelled to look after (even if it was as sparingly as he could swing it without a guilty conscience). After Merrick joined the army, they spoke even less, and the next time they caught up wouldn't be until she was trying to recruit him to the Owl Airforce.

How does one come to define the fury and solace rapt in her company? Merrick's relationship with Corrine has always been a complicated one to say the leastโundefinable, raw, but ever-present. They initially started off on shaky ground, for in Merrick's eyes there was little justification for women to be entangled in such a gruesome war (there might've hardly been one for the men either). It was perhaps a cruel trick of fate that their paths continued to cross. Bickering turned to banter, and then back to bickering, but quiet nights with a drink in either hand had a way to soften the noise and bring a comfort otherwise unknown to him. In the quiet moments between the two of them, he was gentle. Yet while the war may have brought them together, it likewise fizzled the flames between them into shallow embers as his death denied them any true peacetime reconciliation.
Nasmyth's second album and one of the more politically charged collections, it was recognized as a fluctuation between the discontent of struggles she recognized in the wizarding world, and wishful songs of peace and love. The titular track in particular garnered the album attention from the public and shot her further into the spotlight as she continued to lend a voice to the causes that mattered to her.

Nasmyth - 1959
A collection of love songs and some more "experimental" works, but a beloved album nonetheless with a gentle echo and softer tones carrying hopeful messages for the future. Partially written during her pregnancy with her first child, the album further solidified her place as a folk musician in American wizarding culture.

The last full album Nasmyth released before her death and arguably the most controversial in the wake of Slade's reappointment to office, the songs were seen as a criticism and one last outcry to her husband to follow through with the things he had promised to do in office, in addition to reflecting on her struggles throughout her life.

She originally existed as a LOST OC but she and her sister have since been brought into HP and I still love her. Competitive, curious, an intellectual battering ram yet a little emotionally-obtuse, she's not a perfect human being but she's trying, and I appreciate her.
