rating lego ambulances: the seventies
#338 Ambulance (1970)
classic from basically the dawn of time. looks like your grandfather carved it from a block of wood. nothing fancy but at the time it was probably very impressive. 🚑🚑🚑🚑
#600 Ambulance (1970)
this exact ambulance was also included as part of several sets but I’m not going to go through and try to list them all. more importantly, it looks like something a three-year-old built and I don’t feel right offering them any criticism. wow, billy, it looks great! 🚑🚑🚑🚑🚑
#373 Ambulance (1971)
hold the fuck on. this is just #338 except with a printed front end instead of the neat brick-built one. not falling for it, lego. 🚑
#460 Rescue Units (1971)
this one’s even less different! all you did was make the cross stickers bigger and stick a tile on the roof! 🚑
#555 Hospital (1975)
jesus christ the stretcher has turned the doctors into a human centipede and the girl in the wheelchair’s had her legs chopped off and laid in front of her. proto-minifigs are scary. anyway the ambulance is more vanlike than the ones before it which I guess might speak to shifts in the types of actual ambulances being used at the time (in denmark probably) and actually looks a lot like a small version of what I think of as the standard lego ambulance. it sure is extremely plain-looking though. not even any lights. 🚑🚑
#770 Rescue Set (1976)
the doctors are still centipeding out but the ambulance looks better this time around. also wow lego sure liked doing helicopter and ambulance combos in the seventies, huh? I actually appreciate the design of this helicopter a lot. 🚁🚁🚁🚁🚁 but we’re only actually here for ambulances. 🚑🚑🚑
#606 Ambulance (1978)
what the fuck happened here, lego? you finally invent proper minifigs and you decide that means this skinny-ass roadster with a water cooler duct taped to the roof is an ambulance? you make me sick. 0 ambulances.
#347 Hospital - Lucy Lamb and Charlie Cat Visit Dr. Dog (1979)
the american version of this set was apparently smaller for some reason? but I can only find a picture of the european version, which leads us to a problem. you see, despite the name of the set, dr. dog is clearly the one who’s going out to visit someone. also, ambulance looks suspiciously like a prisoner transport or something. 🚑 it’s bad to lie.
