Illusion Plan
Objects:
-Flowers
-Cigarette carton
Rough Idea:
Aim:
-cigarette to look like the flower stems, flowers blooming at the top
Lighting:
Available lighting
I have an LED light available, i will use this to light both my objects. My plan is to light both my objects from one side so they looks more 3D and have more depth to them, however while shooting i will play around with this to see what i like more.
How can you control the light?
I plan on using a reflector to bounce light back into the image if it is lacking light in certain areas, however i am also going to use flags to control where the light is hitting and making sure light is not spilling anywhere that i don’t want it to.
I will experiment with homemade flags, snoots etc to give me the best lighting outcome.
I will use the same lighting set up for both of my objects
Structure Research
Architectural photography is the photography of buildings and structures.
1.
The above image was taken by Pygmalion Karatzas, they are a greek photographer specialising in architecture. The image is of the Actelion, in Switzerland. I find this image really powerful as the contrast between the building and background is so strong. The angle that the image is taken is also effective as it helps to show the unique shape of the building, something I’m sure the architect would be happy with.
The image is also very minimalist, with just the building and the sky above. This helps to focus the viewers eyes completely on the building itself. I think the image suits being in black and white as well as it makes it looks more dramatic, this is because there is no colours or anything taking away from the building.
2.
The above image was taken by Belgian photographer Danica O. Kus. It is an image of the Terrace in Singapore. I really like the use of colour in this architecture image, it helps to show how the architect has incorporated greenery into their design, The angle this image was taken at also helps to show just how big this terrace is, as well as showing various different aspects of it. From the seating area, to the canopy overhead.
I also really like that the photographer has created a photo that gives the viewer a clear idea of where exactly this is, the colours and elements included such as the colourful buildings in the back, help to show elements of Singapore.
3.
This image is by Marcela Grassi, it is of the Museu d Arte Contemporanea de Niteroi in Brazil. I love the angle that this was taken at as it not only shows the unique elements of the building compared to the landscape, it also shows just how vast in size the building itself is ands where it is situated. Just by the photo itself you can just tell what the building is used for, due to the colours and how unique it is.
The colour that the photographer shows also helps to create a striking image as the building contrasts completely to the surrounding landscape and makes it stand out.
4.
This image is by Cristobal Palma. I love the fact that this image is shot from an aerial view, it shows just how big it is and how much of the landscape it takes up. Shooting the building from this angle also helps to show the unique shape of it and how architecturally unique it is.
I also like how you can see people walking about the grounds beside the building, this also helps to emphasis the size of the building. This angle shows how much thought has went into the building as well, as you can see clearly how the grassy areas surrounding the building move in the same way as the building, something you would not see if you photographed it at a different angle.
5.
This image is by London and Melbourne based photographer Rory Gardiner. I love the minimalism in his image, it helps to shift the focus to the architecture alone. instead of focusing on colour he is focusing mainly on the one thing, id say in this case it is the texture within this architecture.
I really like the fact that he has included a figure in this image as well. This again like the previous image, helps to show the size of the building and how it compares to a human being.
I also think it is effective that he has photographed it at an angle where you can see the corner of the building, this helps to give it a more 3D look and makes the image more interesting.

6.
This image is by Jeanette Hägglund. I really like this image. I like the simplicity of the image overall, she just focuses on the colours of the building and the shapes. I love how the pale colours of the building contrast with the blue background, it almost looks like a painting.
I like that the photo is taken at an angle where the building takes up the majority of the frame and you can see the shadows that are coming off the building.
7.
I really like this image as it shows not only the scale of the building, but also the material that is used to make it. The angle helps to show both of these at the same time, which I think was really smart of the photographer.
I also like the minimal colours used, with the sky being really light in the background yet somehow still complimenting the building as they are quite similar tonally. The angle that this image is shot from also helps to show how unique the shape of the building is, it shows the spiral perfectly that you would not see if it was shot at a different angle.
Structure Plan PT 1
For the structure brief I am planning on shooting the Paisley Abbey. I chose this as it is a really interesting building with lots of character, it is also close to me so I can visit it easily if I needed to go back.
Street views and map. Going by these maps the abbey is easily accessible so I can get a variety of angles and sides of the building.
There is however a main road at one side, so I will therefore have to be careful around that side. Other than that there is no major risks to going to the abbey.
My only issue that I will face is the fact that due to COVID the Abbey is closed to visitors so I will not be able to get an inside shot of it. I will make up for this by taking a more unique outside shot.
Moving Image Evaluation
For this brief we were to choose an advert to recreate that showed various camera techniques and compositions. What I liked most about this brief was actually being outside shooting the videos, it was fun just to play around and shoot whatever I thought would work well. I really enjoyed having the freedom to just create what I wanted, I felt that ideas just kept coming when I was actually out shooting. It was fun to attempt to shoot a video and use various techniques as it is something I have never done before.
This brief helped me to learn more about shooting videos, as well as different camera techniques and com positioning. I liked learning about the various techniques such as tracking, tilt and panning and actually trying them out for myself.
For inspiration for this brief I mostly just went to YouTube and watched various adverts, seeing how different products are advertised in different ways. I also watched a few how to videos to try and get my knowledge up before shooting, this helped to save time on the shoot and get better videos.
I am actually quite proud of how my moving image turned out, for my first time doing something like this I think it turned out quite well. My only issue was editing, I just could not get the hang of it to begin with. Once I eventually got there though it was quite easy, audio is not my strong point however.
If I was to do this brief again I would try to experiment with even more camera angles and techniques, I feel I was quite limited due to equipment and shaky hands :) I would also have liked to shoot on a sunnier day as this would add more to the beachy vibe, but because Scottish weather is unpredictable this would probably be impossible.
Moving Image - Final
Moving Image
To edit my movie image I choose to use iMovie, this is because this is the software I am most comfortable using.
I opened all my clips in iMovie, watched them all then removed the ones that I didn't want to use.
To start off with I put the clips in the order that my storyboard was in, from here I went up to the right hand corner and selected the ‘colour correct’ button and added a warm tone to the clips. I did this as I felt the clips were quite gloomy (thanks Scottish weather xox). This was the only editing I done to the clips as other than this I thought they were fine.
After I was happy with how the clips looked, I added a title to the first clip to mimic the advert I was recreating. However, because I didn't have access to the Marc Jacobs perfume I used Gucci Bloom and changed the flowers etc. to suit this.
Once I was happy with the video, I moved onto audio. To do this I took the audio from my inspiration advert and added it beneath my video clips in iMovie.
