EMPATHY FOR MY FUTURE SELF: DAY ONE

Kia ora! I'm LEIGH, a trans woman from Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, NZ. I used to frequent this website throughout high school (as a boy RIP), and I'm back. Fittingly this song is titled "She's Back", it's the first track of my album Empathy for My Future Self. I'm going to be posting each song from the album here and writing a little bit about it.

This song begins with a sample from the last track of my previous album, Transience, which I made during the COVID lockdowns, while still in denial about my transness. I sampled the line "All I needed was to be the girl". The rest that follows in an instrumental clusterf*ck of different lietmotifs and themes from the rest of the album, all mashed together in something that hopefully feels raucous and epic. The immensely talented Finn Grieve features on saxophone, and the song would be empty and meaningless without her contribution.
