Color will be the new Italic. Color will be the new Bold.
Mark van Wageningen, founder of the Novo Typo foundry, has a vision for the future of colour type. His previous typeface, Bixa, was awarded the President’s Choice at the TDC 2015 awards and his work in the field of chromatic type has progress further.
Mark’s belief is that most type designers underestimate the decorative approach in type design - especially for editorial use. He poses the specific question, ‘Why do type designers traditionally think in black and white?’. This is summed up beautifully be colour theorist, Johannes Itten, “Color is life, for a world without color seems dead”
In answer to this, Mark designed the deconstructed typeface Ziza, which was then cast in 36 pt metal type and used to print his design manifesto, the Novo Typo Color Book.
Prefaced by Gerard Unger, the book makes the case for color in an editorial context and demonstrates color’s use in typographic arrangement, hierarchy and emphasising ideas.
