Okay, I have a couple Hail Mary Deltarune... thoughts, let's call them, before the next chapters drop. Can't really call them theories because they're not really that coherent (and also I came up with them like last night lmao)
This seems utterly bonkers at first glance, but after considering some things this started to make a strange kind of sense to me. Consider with me:
The entire process of creating a Dark Fountain reads like a very basic occult ritual - stab the earth with something sharp while channeling your will into it. Could it be possible that Catti discovered how to create dark fountains while researching the occult?
Talk with her about Noelle in Chapter 2 and she'll describe her as "the light" and that Kris "walks among the dark". Very "teenage goth" thing to say, perhaps, but consider the significance of using the words "light" and "dark" specifically, and their meaning in the world of Deltarune.
Again in Chapter 2, Queen makes personalised rooms for a number of the lightner kids - Kris, Susie, Burghley I Mean Berdly, Jockington, Asriel... and Catty. With a Y, not an I. Strange that Catti wouldn't be included there... until you consider the possibility that she wasn't ever meant to be there, due to her having created that dark world in the first place.
The fact that Kris and Noelle studied the occult with Catti, specifically, feels significant in this light. Queen breaks down the precise steps to create a dark fountain in front of everyone, and at the end of Chapter 2 Kris does exactly that. Could it be that Noelle will at some point "fall into darkness" in the same way as Catti seemed to prophecise?
This was something I didn't even consider until just now, but the Guei spirits that were just revealed in Chapter Four's gameplay might also tie back to Catti, perhaps. They are described as troublesome spirits in Chinese folklore who have to be warded away with protective spells and talismans - of the sort that Catti would perhaps have disseminated to Noelle and perhaps Kris. Something to consider, at least!
That's all I could find from my quick research this morning, but it's interesting to think about, isn't it - what if the Knight we were looking for was right under our noses this entire time?
