Bacon’s death

Today, October 26, 1676, Nathaniel Bacon had died. His passing was sudden due to a disease, but this is common because most of his colonists also died this way. As soon as Bacon died, Berkeley became Governor again and with that power, he hanged more than 20 rebels because Bacon was no longer alive to protect them. All this news is still new to us, some are grateful for his death, while others are afraid of what will happen to them because they were followers of Bacon’s. I don’t know how this is going to turn out but Bacon already burned the Capital, so there better not be any more buildings burned. 🔥

Proud of my son

After long consideration I’ve decided to send Seth abroad to go to a good school to learn more in-depth about the English institutions. We in the South take education very seriously. Ever since elementary school teachers try to teach their students the most they can. As most wealthy families, such as mine, hire a private tutor to come to our home and individually teach our children. 📚

Population

The South is currently holding about 90% of the slaves. Our population already consists of both blacks and whites. We are also known for being more ethnically mixed than the New Englanders. The main reason for our diversity is because of slaves. It’s also becoming more common that slaves are having kids of their own which increases the number of slaves. When female slaves are pregnant it results in providing more food and water for the mother and baby. The mothers also have less work time and more rest time, which I understand but because of it my wife and I have to work more than usual.🍼

Transportation

Today my family and I have experienced a tragic experience. My good friend, Randall has passed away due to a disease. As my family and I were on our way to the church reception in memory of my dear friend, Randall, we hit a bump. This is usual since the roads are in bad condition but I soon began to realize the rest of the road wasn’t any better. I decided that it was too dangerous to continue on the road and went back home. Because of the terrible condition the roads are in, my family and I weren't capable of arriving at the church burial grounds safely. It’s disappointing how ruined the roads are. People need to make the roads better because it’s already getting to the point that waterways are going to be our only way of transportation. 🚣

A deal with slaves

One of the Virginia Governor’s slaves kept on getting drunk to the point that he had to make a deal with them to stay sober for a day. He allowed his slaves to get drunk the following day if they stayed sober for a day. The slaves had to stay sober and supervise the Queen’s party and the following day, as promised were able to drink. 🍹

Retain property and inheritance

An old buddy of mine who lives in England just told me the devastating news that his father passed away but his mother wasn’t able to get her husband’s belongings because of the Puritan lawmakers in New England. Thankfully in the South, women are able to get their late husband’s belongings. The reason for that is because Southern men frequently die young, leaving widows with young children. The southern colonies allow widows to retain the property and inherit their husbands’ estate in order to support their family. 💰

Guess who’s back! Your favorite Southern colonist. Let me introduce myself to the bloggers who don’t know me yet. My name is Lemuel Marshall and I’m 38 years old. I was born on October 17, 1638 in Virginia and stayed here ever since. I’m a husband to my beautiful wife, Elanor Marshall, 👩 as well as a father to my amazing children, Seth and Lydia.👦👧 As for my occupation, I land at the top of the social ladder, which makes me a planter.🌿

I also own 3 indentured slaves as well as 100 acres of land. My slaves do most of the work for me. They cook, clean, and take care of the plants. While my slaves do the work in the garden, I cut firewood and butcher livestock. And when I’m gone my wife cooks and cleans in addition to taking care of the kids. My son usually joins me in the garden while my daughter helps my wife cook, but they are also required to get their school work done.
