@lenabtw
His head hung, the silence that followed harsh on the ear and bitter to the tongue when he opened his mouth. Nothing followed for one second, nor two. Then he sighed, mumbling, “I’m sorry.” He was always sorry. Why was it always his fault? “I know you’re only trying to help.”
“It’s fine,” she lied, her voice soft, and she shrugged her shoulders, not wanting to make a big deal of things. “I shouldn’t have asked what was wrong in the first place.” she added, making up lame excuses because she didn’t want him to constantly feel like the blame, but she was already one-hundred percent positive that it was her fault anyway. It usually always was.
“Maybe this is just how I am.” He hadn’t meant to snap at her, but he was getting tired of people wondering what was wrong with him. He wanted to know that, too, now more than ever since the only thing that seemed right was gone with everything else. His attitude had been steadily declining ever since the breakup, so in a way he was telling Lena the truth.
She slightly shook, but not as much as she used to, probably because she expected him to react the way that he did, even though he told her once he wouldn’t anymore. “Alright, calm down, there’s no need to fucking snap at me.” she snapped back unknowingly, immediately furrowing her eyebrows and looking down at the ground instead of directly at Holden.
At her next question, he scoffed and rolled his eyes, turning around again. “Why does something have to be wrong?”
“You were sarcastic, want to be alone, plus you're rolling your eyes at me more than you ever have, so I think something is wrong."
“Your point?” He turned to look at Lena, trying not to roll his eyes. She wasn’t the first person to point that out to him, but that didn’t make it any more true. Couldn’t he want to be by himself without being considered antisocial and depressed? Then again, he wasn’t exactly happy either.
“It’s not healthy?” she told him, furrowing her eyebrows. “I mean moping around isn’t going to make anything better, Holden,” she added, shrugging her shoulders, not knowing why he was upset in the first place, but she sensed that he was. “What’s wrong?”
“Yeah, sure, you can stay. I wasn’t trying to be alone or anything.”
“You’ve been way too antisocial and depressed lately.”
“It’ll be fine, I promise. Now…where do you want to go? The free world awaits.”
“Oh, uh, I’m not sure. I never really been really far outside of the estate. I mean we could drive around, see what's going on, what they have.”
“Yeah, no.”
“It could be exciting, c’mon.”
“Says who? I’m perfectly fine.”
“Liar. I can tell you’re not, so come, please?”
Only when they aren’t scary.
“I’m pretty sure this isn’t going to be scary, but I’m not going to make any promises.”
“I don’t know. Do I have to?”
“Yes, 'cause you can use some fresh air, now come.”
“Depends on where we’re going.”
“I was just going to walk around, see where my feet take me, you coming?”
“I think I’ll go with the ‘not’ option.”
“Oh, c’mon, scaredy cat.”
I’m right here behind you, don’t worry.
"Oh, good, I thought you were distracted or something. I hope you like adventures."
