on this date, cynthia lilian lennon (née powell) was born .

cynthia was born in blackpool, lancashire, as the youngest of three children of charles edwin powell and lilian anne powell (neé roby).

lilian powell, her mother, was sent to blackpool after world war two was declared on the third of september, 1939, one week before cynthia's birth. they stayed in a bed and breakfast on the blackpool seafront before moving to a two-bedroomed house in hoylake, a middle-class town on the wirral peninsula where cynthia grew up.

at the age of 12, she was then accepted into liverpool's junior art school, and in 1957 started as a pupil at liverpool college of art. it was there she met john lennon, whom she married in 1962. they had a son, julian, before divorcing in 1968.

on this date, julia lennon (née stanley) married alfred lennon .

julia stanley first met alfred lennon in 1928, although her family disapproved of the man, they courted throughout the 1930s and finally married on the third of december, 1938.

alfred later said that julia had dared him to marry her one night at the pub and the challenge was accepted, the wedding taking place at the bolton street register office.

neither of their families had known that they were intending to be married . the couple met at noon at the office and were then joined by their two witnesses: alfred's brother, sydney, and a friend of julia's, a cinema usherette at the trocadero on liverpool's camden street.

the couple ate a meal of roast chicken at reece's, a restaurant in nearby claton square, where john and cynthia would also later celebrate their wedding.

the couple watched amickey rooney film at the cinema but spent their wedding night apart at their respective homes - upon her return home, julia threw her marriage certificate down in front of her family and exclaimed: "There, I've done it! I've married him!"
