“It’s almost like she’s trying to create a family that she’s the matriarch of. You know? Like she just sits in her rocking chair watching us all bond with her fingers tented up as she says, ‘it’s as I planned’.” Kwang joked before he sipped some his beer. “I think she just naturally makes everyone feel like they’re at home around her, and she wants everyone to know how much she loves everyone in her life. She’s great like that.” Kwang felt very lucky that he had a boss like her. He knew that no matter what happened between them that she’d never have anything negative to say about him publicly. This meant that Kwang knew he could always tell her the truth even if he thought it might hurt her feelings temporarily.
He completely understood Leo’s concern. Kwang had also been deeply worried about Love throughout the whole thing. That was part of why he had traveled so much. He could have gone twice, and likely everything would have been fine. However, Kwang wanted to know that everything was going to be perfect not just fine. He too had been anxious about Love coming out, and he wanted to make sure that she felt safe enough to do so. “I can understand her being nervous after everything. I think…” He rubbed his neck as a strange sense of discomfort began to rise him, but he reminded him there was no shame in being proud in his work. “I did as much as I could to make sure that she felt safe. I’m lucky enough that my work before this helped prepare me for this work, and I think my credentials helped her know that I was going to take this seriously.” He looked around for her before admitting. “Plus… I do care about her. I try to be professional, but it’s hard not to when she’s so impossibly sweet.”
For a moment, Kwang drank some of his beer as he considered how to answer the question, and decided the brief version would likely work. “Yes, I was born in Boseong, South Korea. I moved to Paris, France when I was twenty-two to join Interpol. I worked there for a long time before I retired. I needed a job away from the darkness of police work, and a friend who works in LA suggested security. I decided getting away from Paris might do me some good, so I moved here. Europe and Asia are amazing. I can’t blame you escaping there to get some peace. They’re both beautiful. I love Korea the most, but I think that’s bias.” He admitted with a bit of a laugh. “Did the travel help with whatever you were escaping?”
“It’s almost like she’s trying to create a family that she’s the matriarch of. You know?” Kwang said and Leo couldn’t help but chuckle and then smile warmly at the thought of the description the man was giving. He wasn’t wrong, his best friend loved people; she wanted badly to take everyone she met and make them feel love and happy. Every single person that crossed her path she saw a possibility to create a bond that would last forever. Of course, it didn’t always turn out like that and in fact, Leo was constantly worried about people taking advantage of how kind she was.
“That’s actually a perfect description of her. You’re right, all she wants is people to get a long and be happy.” He said and smiled a little more as he looked over at his best friend talking to his girlfriend; warmth spreading across his chest. Leo listened to Kwang talk about himself, how he was born and raised in South Korea before he moved to Europe for work.
“I decided getting away from Paris might do me some good, so I moved here…” He mentioned and Leo couldn’t help but wonder why Kwang felt like he needed to get away from Paris; was he escaping something? Whatever it was, Leo wouldn’t intrude in his privacy. Perhaps if they ended up becoming good friends, later on he would learn the full story residing behind those words. Did the travel help with whatever you were escaping?” He asked, flashbacks of his travels rushed through his mind and a small smile curled up the director’s lips as he saw how it ended up leading to him meeting Rachel.
“Yeah… I mean, it helped me clear my mind. But at the end of the day, I missed my home; my family and friends are here. Heart always calls for the place where your loved ones are, I guess.” He said and nodded with a small smile. “I’m glad I came back, lead me to the exact place I needed to be.” He said being grateful to where he was standing right now.
“How are you enjoying L.A?” He asked with a small grin, “I know it can be hectic and crowded but it has its perks too.”
