Leo and Guang-Hong enjoy their time together until the former has to return to work where a conversation with a coworker has the possibility of changing Leo’s life forever.

Amelia had gotten engaged on New Year’s Eve, Leo congratulating her and asking to see her ring. Mamie finally built up the courage to take night classes to earn her masters while Heather spent two weeks backpacking in Italy with two of her closest friends. All had mixed feelings about being back but responsibilities called, Leo agreeing with an exaggerated whine to put his own humorous spin on things. The group parted to get back to work but Heather stopped him before he put his earbuds back in.

“Leo, can I talk with you for a minute?” Heather questioned.

He was clueless as he followed his friend into the room, sitting in a chair across from the piano bench. The smile on Heather’s face was reassuring yet had seen the same on others when dire news had been delivered to him. Not wanting to jump to conclusions, he returned her smile and waited for her to speak.

“My cousin stopped by the other day and we got to talking. You came up in the conversation,” Heather said.

“Ok,” Leo said.

As much as Leo loved coming home and loved his family, he couldn’t deny that part of himself was stuffed inside of a shoebox under his bed, out of sight.

He had to bite his tongue when his primos flung slurs around like it was nothing. When his tías innocently asked when he was going to find a pretty girl to do pair skates with, he could only force a laugh.

When his mother lit up at trying Guang Hong’s recipes and talked about how she had watched his programs and loved them, Leo had to swallow down shouting from the rooftops, “Yes, isn’t he amazing? That’s the boy I love, and I want you to meet him, I want to introduce you to my boyfriend, Mamá.”

Leo has probably heard a lot of people saying he should learn a quad, and he's gotta be sick of hearing that. even if he agrees with them!

which he objectively almost has to? like, yeah he canonically won Skate America without quads, but he's the only character whose skating we see who has no quads, and there's a reason for that.

also, of the three other characters we know competed at Skate America, two of them only have one quad and the third canonically surprised everyone with how well he was skating all series. and furthermore, since one of the Grand Prix Final medalists the previous season wasn't in the series this season, only four of the six qualifying events had one of those medalists in, and one of the other two was Skate America. so that event was just a lot easier to win than any of the others.

if Leo isn't trying to master a quad, either it's for medical reasons and he's decided he prefers a longer skating career to a more decorated one, or he's making a philosophical point and he's willing to sacrifice his chances at medaling in future international competitions to do it

I don’t think I’ve publicly posted this here yet! This was my piece for @eatskatelovezine !! It was the first zine I ever took part in, and I’m happy they gave me the opportunity !!

It’s been over half a year since I drew it, but I still am quite fond of how it turned out. :> I also did a few chibis to go along with the actual recipe pages, but I’m not as fond of how those look ahaha.
