Past Life

Beauty’s father, after experiencing car trouble, takes advantage of a stranger’s hospitality. However, his benefactor – the Beast – takes umbrage when he steals a miraculous white rose for his beloved daughter. Beauty becomes the guest of the leonine Beast, and the Beast aids her father in getting his fortune back. Beauty later joins her father in London, where she almost forgets the Beast, causing him to wither away from heartache. When Beauty learns that he is dying, she returns, saving him. Beauty and the Beast disclose their love for one another and the Beast’s humanity is revealed. They live happily ever after.

Present Life in Walpole

Leo grew up in relative luxury, being born into a fairly rich Hawaiian family. For much of his life, he lived out there on the islands, doing nothing but spending his days running wild and free. However, Leo’s parents were distant and as a result, he never really received much love. He was hardly abused or neglected, not at all. He was simply left to his own devices a lot. When his parents died – his father being killed in a surfing accident and his mother dying shortly afterwards in a car crash – Leo inherited a fairly large fortune and for the longest time, he had no idea what to do with it.

Eventually, he went off to university for a while and studied wildlife biology, earning a degree in that, before moving away from Hawaii, finding that it held too many memories of days gone by. After much consideration, Leo decided to settle in a quiet place called Walpole, thinking that no one would bother him in such a quiet place. The fact that everyone cowers from his appearance is beginning to really do a number on his self confidence though and he’s becoming insecure and angry, finding himself lashing out more and more now over trivial things.

Headcanon

Leo has several tattoos but two of the most prominent are on either forearm. One is a line from a Baudelaire poem and simply reads "être toujours ivre." The other is representative of his Hawaiian aumakua (a family god/spirit animal). His family's is a shark and so he has nine rows of black triangles facing outwards away from his heart. These symbolize the shark's teeth and is believed to link him to his aumakua.

Leo's real name is Lionela Namahaeka 'Aukai. When he moved away from Hawaii, he chose a Western first name with a similar meaning to his own name. When translated, his names mean:

Lionela: "lion"

Namahaeka: "all-knowing eyes"

'Aukai: "the sea"
